NEW YORK – Seton Hall softball's Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) has been named the female recipient of the Michael Tranghese Postgraduate Leadership Award as announced by the BIG EAST Conference on Thursday. Wingo becomes the fifth Seton Hall student-athlete to receive the honor.

Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Wingo completed her bachelor of science degree in sports management and marketing with a cumulative GPA of 3.975. She was named BIG EAST All-Academic in all four years as a Pirate, and is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student-Athlete Honor Society.

Wingo will receive a $5,000 scholarship, which may be applied to postgraduate study. The award is named for Michael Tranghese, the BIG EAST's first full-time employee who served as commissioner of the conference from 1990 to 2009 and embodied leadership and dedication from the league's inception.

Off the field, Wingo has been instrumental in extracurriculars at Seton Hall throughout her career, including playing a key role in founding The Hidden Opponent on campus. The organization serves to break the stigma which surrounds mental health within collegiate athletics. Wingo has also served as a member of the Buccino Leadership Institute, the H.A.L.L. Leadership Academy, and SHE Can, a Seton Hall organization within athletics dedicated to promoting women in sports. During her Pirate career, Wingo also served as the softball program's representative in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Wingo was named the 2023 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and All-BIG EAST First Team honoree after posting one of the best seasons in Pirates history. In helping guide the softball program to its first BIG EAST championship since 2005, Wingo set new single-season records for base hits (71) and longest hitting streak (19 games) while posting the third-highest batting average in team history (.397). Wingo, who also garnered NFCA All-Region First Team honors, tallied two separate hitting streaks of 14 games or longer during the season, collecting a base hit in 49 of her 59 games played in 2023.

Wingo will continue her education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, pursuing a Masters of Sports Administration. Wingo was one of just 10 individuals out of 125 applicants to be accepted to the program.
