PREVIEW
Seton Hall finished the regular season last week by winning two of three games against Georgetown at Owen T. Carroll Field to clinch a berth in the 2015 BIG EAST Championship in Omaha, Neb. Seton Hall got strong pitching throughout the weekend, started by Shane McCarthy on Thursday. The freshman pitched 6.1 innings and didn't allow an earned run in Seton Hall's walk-off 2-1 victory. D.J. Ruhlman drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Sam Burum picked up his third victory of the season in relief. Game one of Friday's double-header featured one of the most miraculous ninth inning comebacks in Seton Hall history. Trailing 5-2 with two outs in the ninth and the bases empty, five straight Pirates reached base. Ryan Ramiz' single and a subsequent Georgetown error tied the game at five and Chris Chiaradio's ensuing RBI single sent Seton Hall to its second straight walk-off victory. Coupled with Xavier's victory over Butler and The Hall clinched a berth in the conference tournament regardless of the outcome of the second game of the double-header. In that game, Georgetown won, 5-2, to also earn a place in the conference tournament despite losing the series.

ELIA, GRIMM, WEIGEL ALL-CONFERENCE
Seniors Anthony Elia and Kyle Grimm as well as junior Zack Weigel were named to the 2015 All-BIG EAST Second Team on Tuesday. Grimm receives All-Conference honors for a second straight year as he was named to the First Team in 2014. Elia and Weigel are receiving post-season conference honors for the first time.

MCCARTHY PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Freshman Shane McCarthy was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday. McCarthy was instrumental in the Pirates' walk-off 2-1 victory over Georgetown on Thursday. The right-hander pitched 6.1 innings and didn't give up an earned run, while striking out four batters and walking only one. McCarthy allowed only three hits as Seton Hall took game one of a crucial regular season-ending series with the Hoyas. It was McCarthy's first start since April 26.

MIRACULOUS COMEBACK - WALK-OFF #2
In game one of Friday's double-header vs. Georgetown, the Pirates trailed the Hoyas, 5-2, with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth. Sal Annunziata walked, Tyler Boyd hit a double, Alex Falconi singled, Ryan Ramiz singled, and with the aid of a Hoya error, drove in the tying run, and Chris Chiaradio singled to score the winning run in a dramatic 6-5 victory.

WALK-OFF #1
On Thursday vs. Georgetown with the game knotted at one, Kyle Grimm led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left field and advanced to second when Sal Annunziata was hit by a pitch. Jackson Martin pinch ran for Grimm and tagged up and moved to third on a fly ball by Tyler Boyd. D.J. Ruhlman followed with a game-winning RBI single to give Seton Hall a 2-1 victory. It was Ruhlman's first game back after missing five games following an emergency appendectomy on May 2.

CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD
The BIG EAST Championship field is set as No. 1 St. John's, No. 2 Creighton, No. 3 Seton Hall and No. 4 Georgetown. With a 5-2 win over Seton Hall in game two on Friday and a 16-2 Butler loss to Xavier, the Hoyas tied the Bulldogs at 8-10 in the league standings. Georgetown won the series 2-1 over Butler the prior weekend, giving the Hoyas the tie-breaker, and clinching its first BIG EAST Championship berth since 1986.

ELIA'S HONOR ROLL
Senior Anthony Elia was named to the BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Elia was instrumental in Seton Hall's 3-2 victory at Villanova on Saturday. The left-hander pitched eight innings and gave up just two earned runs, while striking out seven batters and not issuing a walk.

ANNUNZIATA MOVING UP CHARTS
As the final games of this season wind down, senior Sal Annunziata continues to move up the career hitting charts at Seton Hall. Annunziata currently ranks fifth all-time with 228 hits, fourth in doubles with 50 and 10th with 139 RBIs. He is already Seton Hall's all-time leader in putouts and is third in at bats.

I like the idea of going with McCarthy tonight. It could only help in the long run. Let's see if the Baseballteam can rise to the occasion this weekend

Please post the URL of the site that gives updates on the team. I lost it when I got a new phone. It may be a twitter account.

SHU trailing 2-0 after 4 innings. The game is available on FoxSports Go "Bigeast".

McCarthy hanging in there. The bats are very quiet.

Jenkins with a single up the middle. Game tied 2-2 with 1 out in the top of the fifth. Clutch hit. The Pirates have a realistic chance tonight.

Weigel fly out and Rhulman strikes out. Not sure why Jenkins did not try to steal in that situation. The Pirate middle of the order has to pick it up here. 2-2 bottom of fifth.

Creighton goes down 1,2,3 in the bottom of the 5th. Excellent inning for McCarthy, very good control and doesn't over extend the at bats.

Crowd of about 4800 tonight, a bit smaller than usual and that's helping SHU.

John Fanta doing dugout color for the broadcast.

Pirates go down easy in the top of the 6th. I do believe they constantly try to pull pitches that
are on the outside portion of the plate. They obviously have been scouted and the pitchers will
continue to do that until the Pirates make adjustments. You must hit the ball the other way if the pitchers
won't give you anything on the inside portion of the plate.

Pirates take care of Creighton in the bottom of the 6th. Very good catch by Jenkins tracking a ball
down in the gap in left center.

Pirates almost blow a great chance to take the lead. Falconi to 3rd on a wild pitch. Then two pop outs
to the infield, but a clutch liner by Jenkins again. Weigel adds an rbi double. 4-2 still batting in the 7th.

Pirates are really fired up here!

McCarthy has run out of gas. Hits 4th batter of the night and then a 4 pitch walk. Shep going to the ace of the bullpen in the 7th inning with Joe DiBenedetto. 2 on with o outs.

Another walk 4-3 Hall. we talked before the tournament about the pitchers maintaining their composure.

double to right field. 5-4 Creighton 2nd and 3rd.

Tough outing there. You must throw strikes or you'll have huge problems.

Pirates don't score in the 8th. Creighton get a man on in the bottom of the inning

Hate walks, have to make the team hit the ball and earn it. ( 1 hit and 4 runs, )

Pirates lose 7-4. Very frustrating loss because it was right there for them at 4-2. Grimm nearly hit the ball out
as the ball was just foul with the 4-2 lead. The Pirate bullpen was the main culprit along with McCarthy losing steam in that 7th inning. Tough to give up 4 runs on 1 hit. Composure I thought could be a factor for the pitchers and it was late in the game. In addition the middle of the Pirate order gave them practically nothing. The bottom of the order was outstanding for the Pirates.

It's going to be tough now as the the Pirates used their ace tonight. The small crowd really let the Pirates have a reasonable chance tonight. This game was a mirror of this year's season for Seton Hall. They just do enough things wrong and it costs them.

Friday they play GTown and that won't be easy either. They just have to dig deep and get to the next day. It's time for those guys in the middle of the lineup to go to the plate with a bit more fire in the belly. Let's see what happens.

Seton Hall gave this game away. Disappointing season. Watched the local high school baseball team - Venice Indians from Venice, Florida win the 6A State Championship at Jet Blue Park ( spring training home of the Boston Red Sox) by a 5-0 score, in the state playoffs, Venice out scored opponents 39-4 in 5 games, finished the season 29-3, # 1 overall in the whole state of Florida and # 7 in the nation according to Baseball America and will probably move up in the national rankings. Venice won the State Championship 3 yrs ago and also won the State Championship 2 yrs ago -finishing the season 29-3 and ranked # 2 in the Nation. They won the State Championship in 2007, last year they lost in the semi- final game of the state tournament. I do not watch their regular season games but have watched almost all of their playoff games. Won State Championship's 3 out of the last 4 yrs ( amazing feat, because you have to win 7 games). Their motto is when the names on the jersey's change but the expectations remain the same then the results stay the same.

OMAHA, NEB. -- The Seton Hall baseball team held a 4-2 lead, but Creighton struck for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally past the Pirates, 7-4, in the first round of the 2015 BIG EAST Championship on Thursday.

Leading 4-2 in the seventh inning, the Pirates' command failed them. After a strong six innings, Seton Hall starter Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) began the inning with his fourth hit-batsmen of the game and a subsequent walk. Joe DiBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.) entered the game in relief, but proceeded to walk the next two batters, the second of which forced in a run. After recording a strikeout, Creighton's Ryan Fitzgerald hit a two-RBI double to reclaim the lead for Creighton, 5-4. A sacrifice fly plated a sixth run for the Bluejays off Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.).

McCarthy pitched well despite a mediocre final line. The freshman went six innings and surrendered just four hits and three earned runs in a no decision.

Junior Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) and Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) each had a pair of hits for The Hall. Chiaradio went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and sacrifice fly. Jenkins went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and his BIG EAST leading 26th stolen base of the season.

Creighton got on the scoreboard first with single runs in the first and fourth innings off McCarthy to take a 2-0 lead.

Seton Hall (24-24) came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) hit a fly ball to right field, which was misplayed by Creighton right-fielder Brett Murray and Ramiz made it to second on the error. Chiaradio delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Falconi with the Pirates' first run and cutting the Bluejays' lead in half. Jenkins followed with his first of two RBI singles up the middle to tie the game at two runs apiece.

With McCarthy rolling, The Hall took the lead with two more runs in the top of the seventh. After a lengthy at bat, Falconi led off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a passed ball. It appeared as though Creighton starter Matt Warren was going to get out of the inning after inducing a pair of pop outs, holding Falconi at third base, but Jenkins delivered a two out single. Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) followed with a double down the right field line, which scored Jenkins from first to put the Pirates in front, 4-2.

The Seton Hall lead however, didn't last long as Creighton struck for four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

With the loss Seton Hall is now placed in the loser's bracket of the tournament. The Pirates will face Georgetown on Friday at 4:30 p.m. ET in an elimination game. The loser of that game will see its season come to an end. The fourth-seeded Hoyas lost to top-seeded St. John's, 2-1, earlier in the day on Thursday.

What?

OK let's see if they can pull off the Xavier of this year routine. It would be nice to play with a lead today. You'd like to see the guys in the middle of the order cut down on their swings and just make some good contact. The swings are too long plus as mentioned they're trying to pull outside pitches. You can't go 0-16 in a Tournament game. Their skillsets are better than that.

Seton Hall with a good 5-1 win. Great pitching by Anthony -complete game 4 hitter with 9 K's and a HR over the centerfield wall by Sal. Let's keep winning!!!

SJU beats Creighton big 8-1.So Seton Hall knows their path and what they have to do
to win this tournament. Saturday they'll play Creighton at 4:30 EST.

The good news is that both teams will be well in to their starting rotations. You might say that SHU can at least match Creighton in that department. In addition the Creighton crowds are probably less than anticipated. So playing a mid afternoon game in Omaha may suit the Pirates. Plus the SHU bats were a lot better in game#2
against GTown with some good production in the middle of that lineup. The HR by Sal Annunziata had to give him a boatload of confidence.

The key for the Pirates will once again will be the composure of the pitching staff. Either Pacillo or Prendergast will get the nod. I'd start the one who won't get rattled by the crowd. Control is so key here. The SHU bats can
compete with the Creighton lineup in this stadium. If the Pirates can get by this one they'll play for the Championship against SJU with complete "house money". The pressure will be totally on SJU in that one. So the Pirates must use the entire roster in this one. The coaching staff should have guys warming up at the first sign of trouble. The further SHU goes here the more relaxed they'll be in my opinion. So you can't have a blowup inning early in this game against Creighton.

You want max focus by the Seton Hall players in this game. If ever they brought their A game, this is the time to do it. SJU is the team to beat in this tournament, but the Pirates can really be the spoiler. Obviously getting by Creighton is paramount.

I'd like to see them move Ryan Ramiz into the middle of the order. This is going to be an excellent player at The Hall and gives them that tough lefty bat to balance out their quality righthand hitters.

Seton Hall created a tremendous opportunity with the win over GTown and getting Creighton in a semi final is a better place to possibly slip into the Championship game. Go Pirates!

Seton Hall needs to go into the game tomorrow vs Creighton expecting to win. Confidence, positive focus and composure. Agree with your post, NYC Pirate.

If SHU beats Creighton, then it looks like we need to beat St. John's twice. (Double elimination now extends to the championship round-- I think.)

SJU already in championship game because it's televised on foxsports Sunday afternoon Today's game should be on the BEDN on Foxsportsgo
