PINE MOUNTAIN, GA. – The Seton Hall men's golf team will wrap up the 2021-22 regular season with the marquee event on its calendar, the BIG EAST Championship, April 25-27, at Callaway Resort and Gardens.

Seton Hall has had one of its best years in program history in 2021-22. The Hall's current 288.50 scoring average is a program record. The prior low mark was a 290.68 during the 2016-17 campaign. The Pirates have won three tournament titles, the Daniel Island Invitational, Ross Collegiate Classic and The Big Texan, which is tied for second-most in a year. Despite large fields, in six tournaments this spring, the Pirates haven't placed worse than fourth.

Seton Hall has won two prior BIG EAST team titles, but hasn't lifted the trophy since 2000. Pirate legend Lloyd Jefferson Go became the third BIG EAST individual champion with a program record for the conference championship 6-under-par in 2016. Current graduate students Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) and Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) received All-Tournament honors last spring when they tied for fifth.

With an impressive Golfstat ranking of 95, the Pirates are very much considered a title contender and will be the No. 2 seed entering the tournament. This year, they'll compete on a new championship course as the former BIG EAST home, Callawassie Resort, undergoes renovations. This year's competition will be at Callaway Resort & Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

Tournament Details:
2022 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP
Host:
BIG EAST Conference
Location: Pine Mountain, Ga.
Resort: Callaway Resort and Gardens
Course: Mountain View
Course Vitals: Par-72, 7,057 yards
Dates: April 25-27, 2022

THE COURSE
Callaway Resort & Gardens' golf pedigree stretches back more than six decades to 1949, when architect J.B. McGovern, with considerable input from Cason Callaway, designed the first nine holes of the Lake View Course. Completed and opened in 1951, Lake View perfectly captured Mr. Callaway's vision that "playing golf should be a pleasant experience in beautiful surroundings."

The Callaways understood the beauty and importance of golf. Mr. Callaway was on the founding Board of Trustees of the Georgia State Golf Association. Almost from the beginning, the Gardens served as a competition venue, with Jack Key of Columbus, Ga. winning Callaway's first-ever tournament, the 1951 Men's One-day Golf Tourney.

This challenging, but playable layout on the Mountain View course will test your strategic and shot-making abilities, just as it did for PGA Tour pros when it hosted the Buick Challenge from 1991 to 2002. The list of winners is a who's-who of Tour stars, with champions including Davis Love III, David Duval, Steve Elkington, David Toms, and Jonathan Byrd.

PINE MOUNTAIN, GA. – Junior Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) fired a 4-under-par, 68, and the Seton Hall men's golf team rocketed to within a stroke of the team lead with 18 holes remaining at the 2022 BIG EAST Championship at Callaway Gardens on Tuesday.

Xie was brilliant on Tuesday suffering just one blemish, a bogey on the fourth hole. He had five birdies and 12 pars in route to a new low-round for the Pirates in the tournament, a 4-under-par, 68. Through 36 holes, Xie is tied for fifth place overall with a 3-under-par, 73-68-141.

As a team, the Pirates entered the day behind Marquette by seven strokes, and quickly eliminated their deficit, holding the lead for the majority of the day. In the end, The Hall shaved five strokes off its first-round score to finish with a 5-under-par, 283.

Seton Hall is now 5-under-par for the tournament with a 288-283-571. Marquette was 1-over-par for the day, and Connecticut matched the Pirates 5-under-par as the best team score in round two. The result is three teams separated by one stroke entering Wednesday's final round. Marquette and Connecticut are 6-under, while the Pirates are 5-under. Creighton is in fourth at 4-over-par.

The best Pirate for the tournament continues to be Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) after his second consecutive 2-under-par, 70, on Tuesday. The graduate student had a remarkable front nine, registering six birdies and three pars in the first 10 holes. A double-bogey on the 14th hole and a bogey on 18 kept him from a career-best effort.

For the tournament, Tait is tied for second place among all golfers with a 4-under-par, 70-70-140. Connecticut's Caleb Manuel may have sewn up the individual title, as he stands alone at 10-under-par.

Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) shaved a pair of strokes off his first-round score. The graduate student was 1-under-par on the back nine, using birdies on the sixth, 12th and 16th holes to power an even-par, 72. For the tournament, he's tied for 19th place overall with a 2-over-par, 74-72-146.

Freshman Angus O'Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia) continued to impress in his first BIG EAST Championship. He was 1-under-par and without a blemish through the first 13 holes. O'Brien finished with a 1-over-par, 73. Through 36 holes, he's even-par with a 71-73-144.

Sophomore Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) subbed in for action in round two and had a solid round. He was consistent throughout, recording a birdie and two bogeys on both the front and back nines. Sun was 2-over-par for the round with a 74.

Back to a 1 stroke lead. It is going to come down to the wire, watching Marquette finish up the last 2 holes after Seton Hall finishes their round.
