Milwaukee, Wis. — The first goal of the season for junior Sophie Liston (Newcastle West, Ireland) and a staunch defensive effort lifted the Seton Hall women's soccer team to its first win at Marquette, 1-0, on Thursday evening.

Junior Anna Prawer (London, England) made three saves and improved to 2-0-1 in net on the season for the Pirates (6-5-2, 2-2-1 BIG EAST). The backline of junior Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.), junior Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany), freshman Lily Camacho (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and freshman Gia Milano (Scotch Plains, N.J.) each played the full 90 minutes and allowed the Golden Eagles to get only three shots on net.

How It Happened

Both sides were evenly matched through the first 25 minutes of the game but Marquette led the shot tally, 6-1. The Pirates found their chance though when senior Maille McDermott (Nashua, N.H.) took the ball away just past the midway line and found Junior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) pressing forward on the buildup. Tavana then connected with Liston, who dribbled twice before striking the ball past the keeper for her first goal of the season in the 32nd minute.

For the third consecutive game, Seton Hall led 1-0 at halftime as the Pirates looked to once again pick up points in the BIG EAST standings. The Hall came out the aggressor in the first 20 minutes and in the 65th it nearly doubled its tally. McDermott corralled an errant goal kick by the Marquette keeper and she nearly found her off her line as she saved the chance and the ball knocked off the goal post. The Pirates' ability to defend and posses for the remainder of the contest proved to be the difference in its first BIG EAST road win since defeating Villanova in 2021.
