The 2014-15 year was another to remember in Seton Hall Athletics, as the Pirates continued to rise in their second year as a member of the revamped BIG EAST Conference.

Highlighted by three NCAA Regional berths (Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Golf),there was no shortage of memorable moments across all 14 varsity athletic programs as Seton Hall student-athletes continued to honor and further the University's proud athletic tradition.

Over the next two weeks, SHUPirates.com in conjunction with BURG will reveal its countdown of the year that was.

CLINCHING COMEBACK

With a berth in the 2015 BIG EAST Tournament on the line, the Seton Hall baseball team and Georgetown met for a double-header on May 15 to conclude the regular season. The Pirates held a slim one-game advantage over the Hoyas in the standings by virtue of a walk-off victory the night before.

Game one of the double-header would prove to be one of the most memorable and historic comebacks in Seton Hall history.

With the game tied at two, Georgetown struck for single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to take a commanding 5-2 lead.

Entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Georgetown’s ace starter Matt Smith was still dominant. The right-hander had given up just one earned run and four hits over the previous eight innings and needed only three outs for his third complete game of the season.

Six pitches into the inning, Smith’s gem appeared to be a forgone conclusion. D.J. Ruhlman struck out on three pitches and Kyle Grimm grounded out to second base.

That’s when the magic began.

With two outs and the bases empty, Sal Annunziata drew a walk with the count full. Tyler Boyd followed with the Pirates’ only extra-base hit of the game, a double to left field, which scored Annunziata to cut the Hoyas’ lead to 5-3. Alex Falconi singled to center field, which scored Boyd, and advanced to second on the throw home. Suddenly, the Pirates trailed by just one and had the tying run in scoring position.

Ryan Ramiz greeted Georgetown reliever David Ellingson rudely by beating out an infield single. On the play, Ellingson threw wide of first base, which allowed pinch runner Jackson Martin to score from second with the tying run. It also allowed Ramiz to move into scoring position with the potential winning run. On a 2-0 count, Chris Chiaradio delivered a hard single up the middle, which scored Ramiz, and made the Pirates winners in miraculous walk-off fashion, 6-5.

The win, coupled with a Butler loss later that afternoon, clinched Seton Hall’s BIG EAST Tournament berth.
