South Orange, N.J. — Despite controlling the tempo, out-shooting NJIT, 13-7, and putting three shots on goal, the Seton Hall women's soccer team couldn't produce a result against the Highlanders as the two sides earned a scoreless draw on Thursday afternoon Owen T. Carroll Field.

How It Happened

The Pirates produced the first three shots of the game including a shot on target by sophomore Caroline Lipton (Alexandria, Va.) that was saved. Seton Hall continued to pressure every time the Highlanders had the ball in their own half and it created an opportunity in the 25th. Senior Abbie Roberts (Bedfordshire, England) deflected an attempted deep pass with her body and it found junior Maillie McDermott (Nashua, N.H.) who flicked it to senior Naomi Welch (Livingston, Scotland) inside the six-yard box. Welch put a decent strike on the ball but the NJIT keeper made a diving save to prevent a score.

In a physical half that featured two yellow cards, both sides were scoreless. After the break, Lipton and freshman Emma Sheehan (Argyle, Texas) both had chances at the goal but weren't able to find the back of the net. Sophomore Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) found senior Julia Aronov (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) in the box at the 25-minute mark but she couldn't tally her first goal of the season. With senior Grace Gordon (Chester Springs, Pa.) between the pipes in the second half, the Seton Hall defense held firm and prevented late attempts at a score by NJIT.

New & Notes

  • Lipton tied her career-high with three shots and one shot on goal.
  • Sophomore Anna Prawer (London, England) earned her first career at goal for Seton Hall.
  • Gordon came on for an injured Prawer and finished with two saves.
  • Thursday saw the first career appearances by Grace Mitchell (Perth, Australia) and sophomore Ella Conger (Maple Grove, Minn.).
  • Roberts, Tavana, sophomore Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany) and sophomore Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) played the full 90 minutes

First Half Scores, Defense Lead Pirates To 2-0 Win Over St. Joe's

South Orange, N.J. — Two first half goals and an impressive defensive effort led the Seton Hall women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.

Freshman Emma Sheehan (Argyle, Texas) got on the Pirates (2-1-1) on the board first before sophomore Natalie Tavana (Middletown, N.J.) doubled The Hall's tally at the 36 minute mark. The Seton Hall back line that featured sophomore Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany), sophomore Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) and junior Alex Fuggle (London, England) kept the Hawks' attack quiet all game as they put up only six shots and one shot on goal.

How It Happened

The Pirates controlled the pace from the opening whistle. 12 minutes in, Saint Joe's played the ball in their own half and Sheehan made her run for the ball and took the pass away. She then saw the goalkeeper off her line and flicked it past her into an open net for opening score of the contest.

Seton Hall would put up three more shots to the Hawks' zero and it believed to have a second goal in the 29th minute but freshman Maddy DeCola (Mahopac, N.Y.) was called offsides. However, six minutes later, the Pirates were on the attack again as sophomore Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England ) pushed the ball forward and it found Tavana. Tavana created open space for herself in the box and drove the ball into the bottom right corner, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Despite a stronger second half for Saint Joseph's, the Hawks couldn't get past the Seton Hall defense as the backline, along with senior Grace Gordon (Chester Springs, Pa.) produced their first clean sheet of the season.

New & Notes

  • The win marked the first home victory for first-year head coach Josh Osit.
  • The goals for Sheehan and Tavana were their first of the season.
  • Tavana now has three career goals and 10 career points.
  • Hampson tallied her first career assist on Tavana's score.
  • Gordon registered her fourth career shutout in goal.
  • Freshman Abby Hall (Brookfield, Wis.) made her first career appearance late in the first half.
  • Pucci was the lone Seton Hall player to play the full 90 minutes.

Gordon tabbed to Weekly Honor Roll

South Orange, N.J. -- Sophomore Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany) has been named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Seton Hall women's soccer team to two shutouts last week. Senior goal keeper Grace Gordon (Chester Springs, Pa.) was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll for her part in two clean sheets for the Pirates.

From her centerback position, Pucci patrolled a backline that kept two opponents off the scoreboard in a 1-0-1 week for The Hall. Pucci played the full 90 minutes in both games and she helped the Pirates limit NJIT and Saint Joseph's to a combined three shots on goal. Pucci was also key in limiting NJIT and Saint Joseph's to a combined 13 shots, while Seton Hall outshot both opponents.

Gordon had one shutout in the 2-0 win over the Hawks and one shared shutout last week with sophomore Anna Prawer (London, England) against NJIT. Gordon made three saves while earning a 1-0-1 record over the weekend.
