Samir has received his release from SJU. We were going after him when SJU came in and scooped him up when Lavin was coach.

Steve Lavin’s 2015 recruiting class is all but gone. For different reasons, the three prospects Lavin brought in won’t play for new coach Chris Mullin.

The third and final member of the group — Philadelphia three-star guard Samir Doughty — has requested his release from his National Letter of Intent, his AAU coach Kamal Yard said Friday night. St. John’s is expected to grant it Doughty’s request, a source said.

That comes on the heels of Louisiana guard Brandon Sampson picking LSU over St. John’s after he de-committed and Arizona guard Sammy Barnes-Thompkins recently de-committing as well. Doughty was the only player to sign.

In the cases of Barnes-Thompkins and Doughty, it was a mutually agreed upon parting, sources said, while St. John’s attempted to keep Sampson.

The roster retooling is in full swing in Queens. This week, freshman center Adonis De La Rosa, a partial qualifier who only practiced last year, and freshman walk-on Myles Stewart both received their release to transfer.

St. John’s already has landed four new players — Tennessee transfer Tariq Owens, junior college transfer Darien Williams, high school senior Yankuba Sima and Missouri State transfer Ron Mvouika — and is heavily involved with three guards: Marcus Lovett of Chicago, New Jersey shooting guard Malik Ellison and Federico Mussini of Italy in addition to forward Cheick Diallo, a top 10 player from Long Island.

The top players from last year with remaining eligibility, center Chris Obekpa and point guard Rysheed Jordan, are returning, Mullin said on Wednesday.

Doughty and Barnes-Tompkins didn't decide to look elsewhere. SJU looking at other options. Sampson decided to look elsewhere, and chose to stay home once coaching staff changed.

So are you saying that Mullins told them to look elsewhere? As I was told, they saw the writing on the wall once Mullin came in and saw who he was targeting. Doughty and Barnes decided to look elsewhere after having a meeting with Mullins.

Mullin and staff discussed with the kids and it was mutually exclusive parting with Tompkins. I had heard Douthy wanted to stay but staff thought it was better for both to part ways.

So they decided to look elsewhere after their meeting(s).

While Tompkins was mutual and he then started to look elsewhere...Doughty was told by the staff that he was not wanted so he then started to look elsewhere.....

I was not told the same thing about Tompkins as you were told....hopefully it all works out for SJU.

These are the facts. SJU wanted to go a different direction. Of those recruits, the one SJU wanted to keep around was Sampson who fit into their plans and is a top tier kid. The others are good kids but SJU coaches wanted to go a different direction, Btw, word on the street is the DeLarosa's mugged Obekpa last week and were booted. SJU parting ways with quite a few of the kids, which is ok. Sometimes better for the kids and the school.
