In what will likely be remembered as the greatest single-season in Seton Hall volleyball history, arguably the biggest highlight was a dramatic five-set victory over defending champion, Marquette, on the Golden Eagles home floor in the semifinals of the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament.

The upstart Pirates led by a core of seniors, highlighted by the Manthorpe twins, nearly doubled their previous record for BIG EAST wins, going 15-3 in the conference, and qualifying for the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 2011.

Playing in the program’s first BIG EAST Tournament semifinal match since 1994, the Pirates outlasted Marquette in five sets (25-23, 25-12, 19-25, 18-25, 15-11) for their ninth straight victory. Stacey Manthorpe logged a team-leading 22nd double-double of the season with 14 kills and a career-high 32 digs. Shelbey Manthorpe also had a double-double, recording a match-high 44 assists and a season-high 27 digs.

After squeezing past the Golden Eagles in set one, 25-23, the Pirates dominated them in set two, 25-12, to take a commanding two-set advantage. Seton Hall led 7-4 in set three, but Marquette went on a run and downed the Pirates, 25-19. Using their third set momentum, Marquette rolled to a 25-18 set four win to tie the match at two sets apiece.

Set five was everything you'd expect from a decisive set with two talented volleyball teams. A kill by Stacey Manthorpe gave the Pirates a 12-9 lead and prompted Marquette to take its second timeout of the set. Out of the break, Stacey drove home another kill to extend The Hall's lead to 13-9. Marquette responded with back-to-back kills to cut the Pirate lead to 13-11, but a Golden Eagles' service error put Seton Hall in match point and Molly Grammer ended the set with a kill, 15-11, to win the match, 3-2.

Although the Pirates’ title run ended the following night with a four-set loss to Creighton in the championship game, their season didn’t come to a close. Seton Hall earned its first NCAA Tournament berth and played eventual NCAA runner-up, BYU, in Tucson, Az. on Dec. 4.

Seton Hall’s memorable season ended with a 28-8 final record. Shelbey Manthorpe and Tessa Fournier became Seton Hall’s first-ever AVCA All-America Honorable Mentions. Fournier was named BIG EAST Libero of the Year and joined three teammates on All-BIG EAST Teams. Head coach Allison Yaeger was named AVCA Regional Coach of the Year and Seton Hall earned BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year, both firsts for the program.
