MBB's Delgado on Domincan Republic National Team, Moon and Keenan-Kirkpatrick to help lead U.S. Track & Field

July 1, 2015

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- When the 17th Pan American Games, kick off on July 10 in Toronto, Seton Hall will be represented on the court and track. On the hardwood, men’s basketball’s own Angel Delgado will represent his native Dominican Republic, while legendary head coach and Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Famer John Moon will serve as the head coach of U.S. Track and Field. Senior Associate Athletic Director Kim Keenan-Kirkpatrick will join Moon as part of the U.S. staff.Capped off by only the second BIG EAST Rookie of the Year award in program history,

Delgado's freshman year was one in which he dominated the glass, leading all of Division I rookies with an average of 9.8 boards per game. He was only the second freshman ever in the history of the BIG EAST to take home the league’s rebounding title, pulling down an average of 10.7 per contest in conference play.

Also named Co-Rookie of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association, seven of Delgado’s 10 double-doubles came against league foes as well. The rookie tallied 10 or more rebounds in 15 games this past season, 10 of which came versus BIG EAST opponents.

While Delgado will be looking for medals on the court, legendary head coach and Moon has been charged with leading the way yet again for the historically dominant U.S. Track and Field squad.

A seven-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year at The Hall, Moon previously coached the US to 36 medals at the Pan American Games in 1995. Most recently, during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, he helped the USA men's track and field squad to seven medal-winning performances as the lead assistant coach.

And that’s exactly why Moon’s back at the helm for the Americans this summer – because he’s a winner.

Moon made winning the standard in South Orange, guiding the Pirates to six conference titles and molding a number of future Olympians. His impact was immediate, coaching the mile relay team to first place at the NCAA Indoor Championships in just his first year, and continues to this day with a cross country program that has made significant strides in recent years.

While Moon will serve as the head coach of the Americans, Seton Hall will also be represented on the U.S. National Track and Field staff. Senior Associate Athletic Director Kimberly Keenan-Kirkpatrick will serve as the events manager for the organization.

Keenan-Kirkpatrick has had an active role in U.S. Track and Field throughout her career, serving as an assistant coach in the 2011 Pan Am Games in Puerto Rico, the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, and as one for the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.

In her ninth year at The Hall, Keenan-Kirkpatrick’s extensive résumé has helped her to bring
those experiences back to the hundreds of athletes and coaches that she works with in South Orange.A 1993 graduate of the Seton Hall Law School, she currently oversees the education and monitoring of compliance issues for all 14 of Seton Hall's intercollegiate athletics programs.

First held in 1951, the Pan American Games serve as an Olympic-style competition featuring North American and South American nations. The Pan-Am event is currently held in the year preceding the Summer Games. Both the basketball and track and field portions of the Pan American Games kick off on July 21.
