Waiting For UConn To Make A Statement

Once Clemson and Fla St bolt the ACC should merge with Big East forming an east coast super basketball conference..

hybrid conference with football schools and basketball only schools??
Exactly. Isn't the notion of a hybrid conference with differing distributions the reason why you guys split off from the old big east? Keep in mind that a hybrid conference might be inclined to view compensating players much more favorably. That might mean the basketball only schools would be at a competitive disadvantage, not only with other conferences, but within their own conference.

I think that ship has largely sailed. (In many ways, it would be the best of all possible worlds for Connecticut, though.)

Right... could you do that once? Probably. Twice? Maybe. Three times?
At some point there is a pattern where you are intentionally selling guns to people who would not be able to get them on their own and you're intentionally committing a crime but a loophole allows it.

That bill would have helped, albeit slightly..

But we'll never get to the more impactful laws because the gun lobby makes you think any progress to help close loopholes isn't worth it and they own our politicians.
My thoughts are the whole law is a loophole. As long as I can get my friend to buy a gun I want, then sell/transfer it to me, I can get anything I want. I'm not a criminal mastermind in anyway and I just skirted the system. Not to mention if I'm the gun owner and I want to sell my gun and don't want to do the paperwork, I'll just claim the buyer is my friend. How does someone prove he's not?

What I agree on is lobbyists are a huge problem. Gun lobbyists are not the only one, food, pharma, etc all own the politicians. Getting rid of lobbyists I'm all for that.

Yacine Toumi

Has an NBA game. At 6'10 with handles, athleticism and versatility, if he can improve his shooting from 3 point range this year I think he'll get some NBA consideration. I think he was already getting looks and if he can play well against BE competition I really think he can be playing in the pros like Rhoden and Mamu
I agree if he can adjust to physical play in the BE.

I'm arguing it wouldn't have had a big impact, not that it's imperfect. Legislation involves compromise but this is no way moved the needle. Friends/Family expemption. Are we piratecrew friends? LMAO. Can I buy a gun from you without a background check. LOL

I am for the ones that will work as well. We will never get to those if we can't even pass the simplest on laws that will help slightly.

SCOUTING SACRED HEART
Seton Hall and Sacred Heart will meet for the seventh time in history on Friday. The Pirates have never lost to the Pioneers, and in fact, have lost only two sets in six prior meetings. Most recently, the teams met at the Sacred Heart Invitational in 2022, a Seton Hall sweep.

The Pioneers are coming off a 12-15 record in 2023, but finished with an impressive 11-3 mark in Northeast Conference play. The top-seeded Pioneers, however, were upset by LIU in the NEC Tournament semifinals, which ended their season. Gaby Zovko was named NEC Setter and Rookie of the Year. Dominique Felix earned NEC First Team honors.

This season, Sacred Heart was picked to finish third in the 12-team NEC according to the 2024 Preseason Coaches Poll. Zovko comes back as a sophomore, while All-NEC Second Teamer Camryn Luginbuhl will be back as a senior captain. The incoming class features 11 newcomers, which includes three transfers.

Sacred Heart had a strong opening weekend, winning two of three matches at the UConn Invitational. The Pioneers swept Youngstown State in the season opener before outlasting LIU in five sets. They're coming off a three-set loss to host UConn on Sunday. Luginbuhl leads the team with 3.82 kills per set.

SCOUTING NJIT
Seton Hall will face local rival NJIT for a fourth consecutive season. The Pirates are 8-1 all-time against the Highlanders and have won seven straight in the series. Last season, The Hall swept NJIT in Walsh Gym. The Pirates' only loss in the series came in 2008.

The Highlanders are coming off a 9-17 record in 2023 which included a 1-9 mark in the America East Conference. NJIT closed the regular season with four straight losses.

NJIT is picked to finish last in the six-team America East in 2024, according to its preseason coaches' poll. Eleven student-athletes return from last year's team which picked up nine wins on the season. The seniors feature team captains Ines Varela and Campbell Walker, as well as Cami Augustine.

NJIT went 1-3 at the Salt City Classic in Syracuse, N.Y. in its opening weekend. The Highlanders lost the season-opener to host Syracuse in straight sets before falling to Cansius in four sets on Friday. On Saturday, NJIT fell in five sets to Lafayette before sweeping Le Moyne for its first win of the season.

SCOUTING KENT STATE
Seton Hall will face Kent State for only the third time ever on Sunday. The teams split the prior to meetings with the Golden Flashes sweeping the Pirates in 1997, and The Hall sweeping Kent State in 2021.

Kent State is coming off a rough 2023 season with a final record of 6-23, which included a 2-16 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Their season came to an end with five straight losses. Logan Henderson was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team.

Kent State was picked to finish last this season, according to the 12-team MAC preseason coaches' poll. Only five student-athletes on this season's 17-member roster were part of the program last season. The Golden Flashes return the top four pin hitters, led by outside hitter Mackenzie McGuire.

Kent State dropped all three of its matches last weekend at the Michigan Nike Classic to open the season. The Golden Flashes were swept by Delaware in the season-opener on Saturday, and then lost in four sets and three sets respectively in a pair of contests against Michigan. McGuire currently leads the team with 1.89 kills per set.

UP NEXT
After the Seton Hall Classic, the Pirates head to Towson, Md. For three matches at the Towson Invitational, Sept. 13-14. The Hall will face Coppin State on Friday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m. The Pirates will then take on Loyola (Md.) on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11:00 a.m. before playing host Towson at 4:00 p.m.

You're for the principle of any law against guns as opposed to one that will work.

You're arguing against progress because we can't have perfect.

Kind of like once people see Trump as President didn't end America as we know it, they'll be more open to a second term?

Yes, exactly. Everyone knows that Trump is morally depraved character who should be no where near the white house... but they saw that things were not horrible policy wise so they don't care about his character and are open to him being president again.

You are obviously hinting at the gun. I agree that there never should have been guns in this house with a kid who has a history of threats. The dad was rightfully charged and I hope him and his son share a jail cell for many years.

If you take away all the guns from all the Americans like some would like we will have a terror attack that makes hamas attack on Israel look like a pillow fight. Additionally, mass murder attacks can occur with other weapons. Knives, suicide attacks with explosives tied to individuals cars running over people at large gatherings or even airplanes.

We need some common sense gun reform where all guns are registered, guns bought or transferred within the family should require background checks, mandatory gun safety training every other year. We also need to punish unlawful gun owners and those who distribute illegal guns. We need to punish the criminals and not the lawful/responsible gun owners.
This is a reasonable position that most gun owners would support. If both parties really wanted to reduce gun violence (and resulting deaths), they would put together a comprehensive plan that included everything in your last paragraph. If you just lead with legislation limiting gun purchases, it’s a non-starter because it doesn’t address the issues responsible for the majority of gun violence.

Another school shooting in America

Yes. Again, it would have shown that legislation over gun laws was possible.
Once people could see common sense laws pass without harming gun owners, they would be more open to the idea in the future.

You need the baby step easy legislation to pass before you can get to the bigger issues.
You're for the principle of any law against guns as opposed to one that will work.

Start with the gun shows and online purchases. Once people see that didn't end the world as we know it, then we can move on to requiring all sales and transfers needing a background check.

The bill didn’t do background checks on all purchases and transfers. There were exemptions for family and friends. You had to sell to stranger to have a background check under that bill. You can literally sell to a mentally ill friend with no background check in that bill. That’s progress?

The fact that the simplest of legislation failed just shows why we can't make ANY progress on this issue.

I disagree. It would have been legislation to say that we CAN do something. It would have shown that the gun lobby doesn't own our politicians and that we can't make incremental progress.

Background checks on all purchases and transfers is a no brainer. It would help, but not do everything on it's own... We can't make progress with one or two things that might help just because it won't solve everything?
