Who ya got

Game's not until Thursday but let's get a lot of opinions.

Cupcake city is over. Now the Pirates move up a weight class. But is it really that far up?

Don't get me wrong VCU is good and to date clearly better than the Pirates. But maybe Saturday we finally saw a glimpse of what this team can do.

I am going with the upset and expect a tight game.

  • The Pirates are coming off of a historic defensive performance against Wagner where they held the Seahawks to just 24 percent shooting from the floor and 28 points, its fewest points allowed since 1947 when they defeated Panzer College, 51-28, on Jan. 30.
  • Seton Hall leads Div. I in scoring defense (46.8 ppg), ranks sixth in FG percentage defense (33.3 pct) and ninth in KenPom defensive efficiency (93.2).

  • The Pirates are 2-0 all-time against VCU with the last meeting coming on Dec. 9, 2017 in the Never Forget Tribute Classic at Prudential Center (90-67).
  • The first matchup against the Rams was a 69-54 Seton Hall victory in, ironically enough, the first round of the Charleston Classic in then-head coach Kevin Willard's second season.

  • Seton Hall has two Virginia natives on its roster and both are starters; Isaiah Coleman (Fredericksburg) and Chaunce Jenkins (Newport News).
  • With the Pirates entering Wednesday's game at 2-2, Holloway has stated that his team's get better as the season goes along and the numbers back that up:

  • Among active players in Div. I, Dylan Addae-Wusu ranks 26th in games played (132), 16th in steals (185) and 44th in assists (368).
  • Similar to last season where the Pirates were picked to finish ninth in the BIG EAST preseason coaches poll but went on to finish fourth, Seton Hall was picked to finish 10th in the 11-team BIG EAST in this year's poll.
  • Seton Hall's 25 wins last season tied for the fourth-most victories in program history and were the most wins for the Pirates since 2015-16 when they also won 25 games.
  • Seton Hall's 13 BIG EAST wins tied for the second-most conference victories in program history with the 2019-20 squad and was one victory shy from tying the 1992-93 team's 14 BIG EAST wins.
  • After finishing with 13 BIG EAST victories last season, Seton Hall has won 10 or more BIG EAST games eight times since the league realigned in 2013-14, which is tied for the third most in the conference.
  • The Pirates last season were the first BIG EAST team to ever finish at least five games over .500 in conference play and not make the NCAA Tournament.
  • Holloway's teams have finished below .500 in conference play just once in six seasons when his first Saint Peter's team went 6-12.

Bullish

I remain Bullish on this team.

The defense is rock solid.

We have many players who can bring the ball up the court and handle the ball—lots of interchangeable pieces.

Coleman, Middleton, and Dual will find their footing and put up numbers.

Tuomi is a good PF.

Jenkins can be counted on.

Give them time......We have the talent and the pieces to make a run and beat a few good teams.

Lots of basketball to be played.

The Giants - New Low. Approaching Howard Beale Status

As if the Hall debacle wasn't enough, The G Men made it weekend of depression. I am a 60 year plus fan and the last decade makes the awful late 60's and 70's look appealing. At least those teams scored points (and gave them up in boatloads). These Giant teams are the worst combination - bad and boring. What was once appt viewing is now an afterthought. Played pickleball in the am but came home and turned on the telly to watch the inevitable. Jones is awful. Question if Daboll is the guy. Joe S has whiffed on too many draft picks. Not a lot to get excited about. Although I hate anything related to tanking, it might be the year to do so. Mara is out of touch. We're a laughing stock. The season can't end soon enough. I feel better after the rant.

Seton Hall to Induct Four Baseball College World Series Teams into Hall of Fame in 2025

South Orange, N.J. - Seton Hall Baseball has had four teams reach the College World Series, and now all four teams will be enshrined in Seton Hall Athletics history. The 1964, 1971, 1974 and 1975 baseball teams that reached Omaha will be inducted into the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame on January 18, 2025, in an on-campus ceremony at the University Center Event Room at 12 p.m.

Following the ceremony, the group will be honored at Prudential Center, where the men's basketball team will play St. John's at 8 p.m.

Showing how potent and skilled this group of former student-athletes and coaches is, these four College World Series teams include 16 individuals who are already Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame inductees and 21 players who were MLB Draft selections.

Registration for the on-campus enshrinement ceremony is now open online, and tickets to the men's basketball game are available through Ticketmaster.

Inductee Biographies

1964 Seton Hall Baseball Team:
Led by head coach Owen T. Carroll, the Pirates were 25-5 and won the NCAA District II championship by defeating La Salle in the semifinals and Ithaca in the final to reach Omaha. Six outs away from elimination at the College World Series, the Pirates scored 11 runs in the eighth inning (still tied for the most in one inning in CWS history) to defeat Texas A&M and stay alive, ultimately finishing tied for fifth in the nation.

1971 Seton Hall Baseball Team: Once again led by head coach Owen T. Carroll, the Pirates got off to a slow start to the season and was 14-12 heading into postseason, but, with excellent starting pitching behind them, they got hot at the right time, sweeping the NCAA District II regional with wins over Buffalo and Saint Joseph's (twice), allowing just three runs in the tournament, to claim the championship and reach Omaha, where they finished tied for seventh.

1974 Seton Hall Baseball Team: Led by Mike Sheppard, Sr., who was just in his second season as head coach, the Pirates ran roughshod over the Northeast region with a 30-8-1 regular season record before defeating Penn State, Saint Joseph's and St. John's in the NCAA District II Championship to clinch a College World Series berth. The Pirates hit over .300 as a team that season, their 33 wins set a new program record and they finished tied for seventh in the country.

1975 Seton Hall Baseball Team: Again led by Sheppard, Sr., the Pirates made it back-to-back trips to Omaha by going 28-8 in the regular season and then capturing the NCAA District II championship with wins over Penn, St. John's and Maine, which capped a 14-game winning streak. The Pirates staved off elimination in Omaha with an 11-0 win over Florida State, which featured Todd Heimer throwing a complete game shutout, currently one of only 85 ever thrown at the College World Series. The team, ranked No. 9 in the national rankings going into the tournament, finished tied for fifth in Omaha.

Seton Hall’s point guard situation is in a state of flux heading into Charleston Classic

By Adam Zagoria | For NJ Advance Media

Seton Hall’s point guard situation is in a state of flux heading into this week’s Charleston Classic.

Providence transfer Garwey Dual (shoulder) and Bethune-Cookman transfer Zion Harmon (undisclosed) are both sidelined, and head coach Shaheen Holloway says he’ll spend the time leading up to Thursday’s date with undefeated VCU in Charleston (5 p.m., ESPN2) focusing on working with Dylan Addae-Wusu and Chaunce Jenkins at the point.

“Now I know who’s playing, who’s not playing, now I can work with Dylan and Chaunce at the point guard spot,” Holloway told reporters following his team’s 54-28 defensive masterpiece over Wagner on Saturday at Walsh Gym that moved them to 2-2 on the season.

“It’s just things that, as a coach, now I get to say, ‘okay, he’s here, he’s here, he’s here, he’s not,’ instead of showing up at practice and being like, ‘oh, he’s not here today?’ You know what I mean? Those things are kind of frustrating, but now I know what I have, and that’s good.”

Holloway declined to get into detail on how long Dual and/or Harmon would be out. The 6-foot-5 Dual was once a projected NBA lottery pick, but has struggled to adapt to the point guard spot in a small sample size of three game at The Hall. He’s averaging 1.3 points and 2.0 assists and is now apparently battling a shoulder injury.

Harmon, generously listed at 6 feet, was a middle school and high school sensation who averaged 14.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 31.0 minutes per game last season at Bethune Cookman, but has dealt with off-the-court issues that have impacted his development.

“There’s a lot going on with [Dual],” Holloway said. “His shoulder’s kind of messed up right now, so he’ll get reevaluated in the next couple days and see what’s what. Zion, he’s got some things going on as well. I don’t know—I don’t see the future because that doesn’t make sense—but I don’t know what’s gonna be entailed the next couple days with these guys, so I gotta focus on Dylan and Chaunce, and get those guys ready for the trip.”

Jenkins went for 16 points, including 3-of-5 from deep, with 3 rebounds and 3 assists against Wagner, and leads The Hall in scoring at 14.8 points per game.

Addae-Wusu tallied 5 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

The duo combined for 7 of Seton Hall’s 13 assists against Wagner.

The Hall leaves for Charleston on Tuesday and will face VCU, the preseason pick to win the Atlantic 10, on Thursday and then either Vanderbilt or Nevada on Friday. After taking Saturday off, the Pirates will close on Sunday against either Miami, Drake, Oklahoma State or FAU.

“I gotta continue to keep instilling confidence in Dylan and Chaunce to handle the basketball and make some plays for us,” Holloway said. “I thought Chaunce was really good for us today, I gotta give Dylan his confidence back. He’s playing with the world on his shoulders. I told him at halftime, ‘I don’t need you to be great, I need you to be solid.’”

OKORAFOR MAKES DEBUT

Louisville transfer Manny Okorafor made his season debut against Wagner, logging 8 minutes, two points, one assist and no rebounds.

Holloway is counting on the 6-9 native of Nigeria to play a bigger role in the middle going forward.

“Having Manny back, it was a boost for us,” the coach said. “I just wanted to give him some minutes before we go down to Charleston. He’s only had three or four practices, but he’s gonna be really, really good for us...
