This will be only the fourth time Seton Hall and USC have met with the Women of Troy winning the prior three meetings. Most recently, the teams faced off at the Cancun Challenge in Mexico in 2021 with USC winning, 78-66.

SCOUTING USC
USC is coming off a strong 2022-23 season that featured a 21-10 final overall record and an 11-7 mark in Pac 12 play. The Women of Troy fell in the opening round of the Pac 12 Tournament, but still managed to earn an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament. They fell in the opening round to South Dakota State, 62-57, in overtime.

USC women's basketball welcomed the Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year to Troy, with the addition of heralded incoming freshman JuJu Watkins. In addition to All-Pac 12 Teamer Rayah Marshall, USC welcomes back guard Kayla Williams, who picked up 2023 Pac-12 All-Defensive Honorable Mention. USC also added four graduate transfers to the 2023-24 Trojan roster. Three — Kaitlyn Davis, McKenzie Forbes and Kayla Padilla — were standouts in the Ivy League, and one — Roxane Makolo — boasts international experience with Team Canada.

The Trojans were picked to finish sixth in the 12-team Pac 12 Conference this season, according to the Preseason Coaches Poll.

So far this season, the Women of Troy have been better than advertised. They enter play at Baha Mar with a perfect 3-0 record and ranked 10th in the nation. USC opened the season by stunning No. 7 Ohio State in Las Vegas, 83-74. Since, they've recorded easy victories at home against Florida Gulf Coast and Le Moyne. Watkins currently leads the team with 28.3 points per game.

UP NEXT
Seton Hall will continue play at the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship on Wednesday, Nov. 22 against East Carolina. Tip time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. That contest will also be available for FloHoops subscribers. Joe Matthews and Jon Heite will describe the action for WSOU FM.

Seton Hall Basketball Predictions Update Nov 19, 2023

After beating Wagner 72-51 yesterday, Seton Hall is now projected to finish the regular season 17-13 (9-11 Big East).
• The odds that the Pirates make the NCAA tournament are up to 31%, an increase of 3% since yesterday.
• We currently rank Seton Hall as the #55 team in the country, and the #7 team in the Big East.
• Next game: Thu, Nov 23 vs. #27 USC. Our power ratings give the Pirates a 36% chance to win

Going to be hard to keep Coleman off the court…..

Will be interesting to see how he does against better competition, but guy gives instant energy and intensity and gets after it on the glass, defense, and he can friggin finish for the most part around the basket. He may be a better 3 pt shooter than anyone would give him credit for. He’s looking the 6 man right now for us who can do a little of everything. Given the way the team started the game in sleep mode yesterday, he’s a spark.

Davis Powers Pirates To Win Over Wagner, 72-51

Box

Newark, N.J. - Senior Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored a game-high 17 points and senior Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Seton Hall men's basketball team improved to 4-0 with a victory over Wagner, 72-51.

The Pirates had three players score in double figures, as graduate student Jaden Bediako (Brampton, Ontario) added 11 points and seven board to guide The Hall to its first 4-0 start to a season since 2016-17.

How It Happened

Seton Hall fed the paint early with Bediako scoring four of the Pirates' first eight points. Wagner used a 7-0 run to take a four point lead, 12-8, but Richmond answered with a three-point basket that made it a one-point game, 12-11.

Davis then went on a scoring run by himself. He first converted a tough layup with contact that gave the Pirates the lead again, 13-12, with 9:43 left in the first half before grabbing the rebound on the next defensive possession and drawing a foul on the other end. After hitting two free throws, Davis came up with a steal and transition jam that pushed the Pirates' lead to 17-12.

Eight of Richmond's team-best 11 first half points were scored in the final 4:31 of the first half, helping stretch the Pirates' lead to double-digits and making the first half score, 32-22.

The Seahawks hung around early in the second half where they only trailed by nine, 39-30, with 17:03 to play. Seton Hall found its shooting stroke though as it nailed back-to-back threes on its next two possessions from seniors Dylan Addae-Wusu (Bronx, N.Y.) and Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.), respectively, that made it a 15-point lead for the Pirates, 45-30.

With 11:51 to play, Davis would go into takeover mode again as he scored the Pirates' next five points that pushed The Hall's lead to 55-34. Freshman Isaiah Coleman (Fredicksburg, Va.) came off the bench with 10:51 to play and once again made an impact by scoring on a spinning layup and cashing in on his first career three-pointer from the corner of the floor that took Wagner out of it for good and made it 66-42 with 5:33 left.

Inside The Box Score
  • Seton Hall shot 48 percent from the field, 32 percent from beyond the arc and 91 percent from the free throw line.
  • The Pirates held Wagner to just 31 percent shooting from the floor and 23 percent shooting from deep.
  • Seton Hall was just +4 on the backboards in the first half but finished +12 for the game, 43-31.
  • Wagner was successful in transition, finishing with 12 fastbreak points compared to the Pirates' four.
  • 42 of Seton Hall's 72 points were in the paint.
  • The Pirates finished with 15 assists and 12 turnovers.
  • The Seahawks took care of the basketball, committing only nine turnovers.

PREVIEW

Seton Hall will return to action this week for its final two matches of the 2023 regular season. The Pirates will travel to Chicago to take on DePaul on Friday, before heading to Milwaukee to face Marquette on Saturday.

Both matches will be streamed live and available for FloSports subscribers. Both will also have live stats.

LAST WEEK
Seton Hall split its final two home games of the season last week. The Hall had a thrilling three-set sweep of St. John's on Nov. 8 before falling to No. 15 Creighton on Nov. 10.

The Pirates collected 14.0 team blocks and held St. John's to an attack percentage of just .009 in a stunning 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) sweep of the Red Storm. St. John's, which came into the match tied for first place in the BIG EAST Conference with Creighton and Marquette, couldn't find its offensive footing, making 30 attack errors thanks in large part to the Pirates' staunch front line. Senior Bianca Bucciarelli (Carate Brianza, Italy) had a match-high 11 kills to go with five digs and three blocks.

Junior Hanna Tulli (Collegeville, Pa.) had a team-high nine kills, but The Hall fell to No. 15 Creighton, 3-0 (17-25, 18-25, 21-25), despite a spirited effort on Senior Night. Creighton showed why it's one of the premier offensive programs in the country, collecting 57 kills and a .465 attack percentage without allowing the Pirates to record a single block.

PLAYOFF RACE
It all comes down to this. Seton Hall finds itself tied for fifth place in the BIG EAST standings with two matches left. The top six teams in the final standings will qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament.

1. Creighton (14-2)
Marquette (14-2)
3. St. John's (12-4)
4. Xavier (11-6)
5. SETON HALL (8-8)
DePaul (8-8)
------------------------------
7. Villanova 7-9
8. Butler 7-10

DePaul will play Seton Hall and St. John's. Villanova will face the two weakest teams in the BIG EAST in Providence and Connecticut. Villanova has the head-to-head tie-breaker against Seton Hall. The Pirates currently have the tie-breaker over DePaul, but the teams play on Friday.

SCOUTING DE PAUL
On Friday, Seton Hall and DePaul will meet for the 28th time in history. The Pirates have an impressive 21-6 all-time record against the Blue Demons, but DePaul has dominated the series in recent years. Earlier this season, The Hall edged DePaul in five sets in Walsh Gym.

Graduate student Madeline Matheny (Wilmington, Del.) had a career-high 19 kills and the Pirates edged DePaul, 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 26-28, 19-17), in a wild, back-and-forth affair on Oct 14. Matheny was brilliant, collected a double-double with a career-high 19 kills, with only five attack errors, and a season-high 17 digs.

In all, four Pirates collected at least 12 kills. Senior Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) had 13 kills and three blocks. Tulli had career-highs of 12 kills and eight blocks, while freshman Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hawaii) also tallied 12 kills. Roberts-Navarro collected 11 of her 12 kills in the fourth and fifth sets.

DePaul enters Friday's pivotal contest with a 15-12 overall record and an 8-8 mark in BIG EAST play. They came up with a pair of huge four-set road victories last weekend at Villanova and at Georgetown to remain locked in the standings with Seton Hall. DePaul's Jill Pressly currently leads the BIG EAST with 4.69 kills per set and Rachel Krasowski leads with 5.19 digs per set.

SCOUTING MARQUETTE
Seton Hall and Marquette will meet on Saturday for the 29th time in history. The Golden Eagles have dominated the series, winning 23 of the prior 28 meetings, including the last 14 matches. The Pirates' last victory in the series came in five sets in the semifinals of the 2014 BIG EAST Tournament. Most recently, The Hall fell to Marquette in four sets on Oct. 13.

Matheny had a team-high 11 kills, and the Pirates rallied to win a set, but ultimately fell to Marquette, 3-1 (16-25, 25-19, 14-25, 19-25). Seton Hall's victory in set two was only the third set Marquette had lost in seven BIG EAST matches up to that point in season. Matheny had a team-high 11 kills to go with seven digs and three aces to lead The Hall's offense. Lucas had nine kills and seven digs, while Bucciarelli had eight kills and nine digs.

Marquette enters the weekend with an 18-9 overall record and tied for the BIG EAST lead with a 14-2 mark in conference play. They had won five in a row before being swept by Creighton on Nov. 5. Last weekend, they swept Georgetown on Friday and defeated Villanova in four sets on Saturday.

UP NEXT
After this weekend, we will know if the Pirates have qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament. If they do, the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 22 in Milwaukee, Wis.

Post Game at Pepe’s

Great job by Vince and everyone on the Booster Club with the dinner reception after the game.

Event was hosted by radio voice Dave Popkin who was fantastic. Jerry Carino had some great insight on the team and his take on what went down in the the handshake line after the game

The Q&A session with assistant coaches Ryan Whalen and R Davis was very informative. Coaches said they are just scratching the surface with offensive play installation. High Scorer from yesterday Dre Davis showed up with his family and he spoke a few minutes about the progression of the freshman and what he thinks this years team is capable of.

Lastly Glenn Mosley spoke and provided some funny stories of what it was like to play for coach Rafferty. The fact that Glenn averaged 16.3 rebounds a game (also had 28 boards in one game is crazy)

The Food was incredible . Great nite all around.
