SET 3:
The Musketeers led the third set wire-to-wire. Xavier started by scoring the first seven points and forcing an early Pirates' timeout. The Hall regrouped, and a kill by Wallace cut its deficit to 12-9. Xavier answered with a 6-0 run to extend its lead to 18-9. A kill by Loiselle cut Seton Hall's deficit to 19-15, but the Pirates couldn't get closer, and ultimately fell, 25-20.

SET 4:

The Musketeers cut their deficit to 22-19 late, but the Pirates scored three of the final four points to tie the match. A block by Lucas and Wallace put The Hall in set point, and a kill by Lucas was the set winner. Klungel had 11 assists, seven digs and four kills in the fourth set alone.

SET 5:
Trailing 3-2, Xavier went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 11-4 advantage in the final set. The Hall scored four of the next five points to cut their deficit to 12-8 and forced a Xavier timeout, but the Musketeers regrouped out of the break and found the final three points.

SCOUTING XAVIER
Seton Hall and Xavier will meet for the 21st time in history on Friday. The Musketeers have dominated the prior 20 meetings, winning 16 matches, including a sweep of last season's home-and-home series. The Hall's last victory came in Walsh Gym, a three-set sweep during the 2021 season.

The Musketeers are coming off an 18-12 season in 2023, which featured an 11-7 mark in BIG EAST play. Xavier qualified for the 2023 BIG EAST Tournament, but fell to DePaul in four sets in the opening round. Both Carrigan O'Reilly and Delaney Hogan were named to the All-BIG EAST Team.

This season, Xavier was picked to finish sixth in the 11-team BIG EAST according to the preseason coaches' poll. Seton Hall was selected seventh. The Musketeers are returning eight players from last year's roster and have added five newcomers.

Xavier enters the weekend with a 4-10 record overall and a 2-2 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Musketeers are coming off a split of last weekend's contests. On Friday, Xavier was swept at home by St. John's, but they bounced back and swept Villanova on Sunday. Their other BIG EAST victory came in three sets against Buter on Sept. 28. The Musketeers have one of the top setters in the conference with Logan Flaugh currently averaging 10.31 assists per set, which ranks second in the BIG EAST.

SCOUTING DE PAUL
Seton Hall and DePaul will renew their rivalry on Sunday. The Pirates own a 21-7 all-time series lead, but the Blue Demons have won six of the last eight games in the series. Last year, the teams split the home-and-home series with the Pirates winning in five sets in Walsh Gym, and DePaul sweeping The Hall in Chicago.

DePaul is coming off an 18-15 season, which featured a 9-9 mark in conference play. The Blue Demons qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament and defeated Xavier in four sets before falling to top-seeded Creighton in the semifinals. DePaul accepted an invitation to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) and defeated Southern Illinois in four sets in the first round before falling to Drake in round two.

This season, the Blue Demons were picked to finish fourth in the 11-team BIG EAST according to the preseason coaches' poll. Seton Hall was selected seventh. DePaul boasts a pair of Preseason All-BIG EAST selections in Jill Pressly and Rachel Krasowski. A unanimous pick, Pressly paced the conference in both kills (516, 4.45/set) and points (575.5, 4.96/set) last year. Krasowski's 553 digs (4.98/set) also led the league.

The Blue Demons enter the weekend with an 11-5 overall record and a 3-1 mark in BIG EAST play. Last weekend, DePaul suffered its first conference loss, a four-set setback at home to Villanova on Friday, but it bounced back in a big way with a sweep of St. John's on Sunday. The prior weekend, they defeated both Xavier and Butler. Pressly currently leads the BIG EAST with 4.20 kills per set, while Krasowski is second with 4.55 digs per set, trailing only Seton Hall's Rylee Nelson.

CBS Big East preseason picks

Seton Hall 8th
Shaheen Holloway has made a good living thriving on others underestimating his teams and his coaching ability. The roster in South Orange, New Jersey, doesn't look intimidating, but how far should SHU fall a year after winning 25 games and taking the NIT championship? I'm uneasy slotting SHU at No. 8. Remember, the Hall was two spots from making last year's NCAAs, only to be boxed out by bid thieves. Kadary Richmond's departure to St. John's is a massive hit, without question, so the question morphs to: Who is the alpha now? Dylan Addae-Wusu(8.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg) is the most productive returnee. The roster changeover (Seton Hall lost approximately 75% of its minutes) means this is the most mysterious team in the conference. Truthfully, Holloway's track record is what is keeping SHU from 10th or 11th in our preseason forecast.

Go Pirates!

Yet another conference realignment proposal - This one seems different.

This one feels different mostly because it's not being proposed by have not schools trying to worm their way into a better situation. This one has the top 70 football schools forming a new "league" instead of a new conference. They would then only schedule games against each other. Theoretically, existing conference structures would not change. Private equity would pay them upfront to buy out any schedule games that did not meet the model and then would own the new "league" and retain 5 to 12 1/2% of the profit after guaranteeing league members a defined amount of money annually.

What would be the fallout from this? Is it the first shoe dropping of a breakaway from the NCAA? Is it a de facto decoupling of football and basketball which ultimately results in basketball being valued separately, which would be a good thing for us? Or is it just the latest private equity attempt at a money grab of the inherent value in college football?
