Candid Coaches: Should NCAA athletes get a fifth year of college eligibility if they opt not to transfer?

It's a hyperactive transfer world, but what if the NCAA enabled a dangling carrot to players who remain loyal?

Part 1 Tony Bozzella interview

By Zack Cziryak

TROVE: You have been someone who's embraced the transfer portal for years as your teams have seemed to have a certain level of turnover, but things are completely different now. Can you touch on what's so difficult about running a program in this type of environment?

BOZZELLA: Before this unlimited transferring, we really only had one year where we had a lot of kids transfer. For the most every other year we'd basically lose 1 or 2 kids, but we would go after and we would be able to identify a certain amount of kids and do very well that way. What hurts now is two years ago I brought in seven transfers and six of them were seniors so I had to start all over again. It's just made it very difficult because the way recruiting has changed.

We don't want to bring in a ton of freshmen because two things happen with freshmen. One, they don't play, they're going to leave. Two, you have a lot of them play you're going to lose. We're in the Big East where we're playing against women, especially even now with still the Covid year available. We have a kid on our team Faith Masonius, she's going to be 24-years old. How is a 17-year old going to compete against them all the time? You're not. And it's just changed the whole dynamic.

It's not the portal, it's the immediate transfer rule. We don't know from year to year who's going to stay or who's gone. When [players] had to sit out a year you had a little bit of an idea of who was staying. Now we don't. People are like 'Who are you recruiting?' Everybody. 'What position?' Every one. I wish I could tell you that Jada Eades, who is one of the best freshmen I've ever recruited and Savanna Catalon, who is an All Big East rookie team kid - I wish I could tell you that that's going to be my backcourt for the next three, four years. I hope so, but you know I don't know. One's from Florida, one's from Texas and then if we start talking NIL it really becomes difficult.

Title IX will apply to college athlete revenue share, feds say

  • Paula Lavigne
  • Dan Murphy

An official for the U.S. Department of Education, the federal enforcer of gender equity in sports, said Title IX rules will apply to future revenue dollars that schools share with college athletes, but the department declined to offer guidance on how schools should distribute the money between men and women to comply with the broad language of the law.

"Schools must provide equal athletic opportunities based on sex, including with respect to benefits, opportunities, publicity, and recruitment, and must not discriminate in the provision of financial aid," Catherine Lhamon, the assistant secretary for the department's Office for Civil Rights, said in a written statement to ESPN. "In the new NIL environment, these same principles apply."....................

Davis Scores In 2-1 Loss To Lehigh

resize

South Orange, N.J. — Seton Hall women's soccer suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday evening despite the first career goal from freshman Nina Davis (Ramsey, N.J.) as Lehigh topped the Pirates, 2-1.

Davis was assisted on her goal by senior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) and senior Caroline Lipton (Alexandria, Va.). The Pirates (1-1-1) will look to bounce back on Sunday when the face Rider at 5 p.m. in Lawrenceville.

How It Happened

It was an even first 30-plus minutes in terms of possession but it was the Pirates who produced more quality chances. Senior Skyler Matusz (Kearny, N.J.) flicked a pass back to senior Sophie Liston (Newcastle West, Ireland) who got a good shot off but couldn't finish. Freshman Tori Angelo (Sellersville, Pa.) also had daylight in the scoring area and fired off a strong attempt that was also stopped by the Lehigh keeper.

Seton Hall finally broke through in the 38th minute when Lipton found Tavana in the box following a throw-in. Tavana sent a crossing pass in front of the net that found Davis in stride as she put Seton Hall 1-0.

Lehigh's attack was improved coming out of halftime and it took advantage of a couple of Seton Hall miscues defensively to score two unanswered goals that put them ahead 2-1. Despite playing a player down for the final 16 minutes, the Pirates still managed to get off four shots including three that were on target but they couldn't find the equalizer.

Resch's Header Goal Gives Pirates a 1-0 Season Opening Win at FIU

MIAMI - Junior Agustin Resch (Arata, Argentina) scored in the 60th minute of Seton Hall men's soccer's season opener at FIU, and the goal held up as the Pirates defeated the Panthers, 1-0, Thursday night at Leyva Family Field.

It's a huge road win for the Pirates against an FIU squad that is coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and was picked to finish second in the American Athletic Conference.

How It Happened
Early in the second half, Seton Hall got into an aggressive groove, attacking the Panthers with strong ball movement. Junior Virgil Dall'Agnol (Grenoble, France) had back-to-back shots saved by the Panthers keeper in the 55th minute, and eventually the ball landed past the end line for a Seton Hall corner. Dall'Agnol took the kick and swifly nailed it into the box for a waiting Resch, who soared into the sky and headed the ball past FIU's keeper at the top-center part of the goal. The Pirates did a great job from there limiting FIU's offensive opportunities as the Panthers got only one shot on goal in the final 30 minutes.

Inside the Box Score
  • Seton Hall led in shots with 12 and shots on goal with nine to FIU's 10 shots and three shots on goal.
  • Resch and Dall'Agnol accounted for four of Seton Hall's nine shots on goal.
  • Junior goalkeeper Matias Molina (Rosario, Argentina) made three saves in net for his first career clean sheet.

South Orange, N.J. -- The Seton Hall men's soccer team, coming off its third BIG EAST Tournament trip in the previous four seasons, aims to build on that success in year seven under head coach Andreas Lindberg as the Pirates travel down to Miami to open their 2024 season against FIU Thursday night at FIU Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.

The Pirates will face three teams on their 2024 schedule that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, including FIU. This is the second-ever meeting between the two schools; the Panthers took the first decision, 2-1, back on Sept. 8, 2019. Always a strong program, the Panthers have made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and received a national seed in 2021 and 2022.

YEAR SEVEN FOR LINDBERG

  • Lindberg is 43-36-20 (.535) in his six seasons at the helm of the Pirates.
  • The Pirates are 4-0-2 in season openers under Lindberg
  • The Pirates have made it to the BIG EAST Tournament in three different seasons under Coach Lindberg, including winning the BIG EAST Tournament Championship in 2020, the school's first since 1991.
  • Lindberg has led the Pirates to two NCAA Tournament appearances in the last four seasons, including a run to the quarterfinals in 2020.
FAMILIAR FACES

  • The Pirates will be returning 22 players from last years roster, including nine players who registered a point and six players who scored a goal.
  • The 22 returning players account for 12,126 of the 16,793 total minutes played last season, with Liam Guske (St. John's, Fla.) leading the group with 1,446 minutes played.
  • Twenty-three players on the 31-man roster are upperclassmen with four graduate students, seven seniors, and 12 juniors.
  • Graduate student Jared Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.) is the leading points returner from last season; he produced a career-high nine points on two goals and five assists.
  • The Pirates look to build on their defensive presence with the bulk of the back line returning after posting five shutouts last season.
FIRST YEAR AT THE HALL

  • The Pirates welcome eight new players to the program, including graduate student goalkeeper Soren Jensen (Nyborg, Denmark) from Post University. He was the CACC Goalkeeper of the Year, CACC All-Conference first team, D2CCA All-East Region second team, and United Soccer Coaches' All-East Region first team.
