4 more Iowa athletes plead guilty to underage gambling

Associated Press

Four former University of Iowa athletes who faced criminal charges in connection with a state investigation into illegal sports wagering have pleaded guilty to underage gambling in agreements reach with prosecutors in Iowa City.

Football players Arland Bruce IV, Reggie Bracy and Jack Johnson and basketball player Ahron Ulis originally were charged with tampering with records for allegedly falsifying information used to register accounts on mobile sports wagering apps.

Bruce, Bracy, Johnson and Ulis finalized plea deals last week. Bruce, Bracy and Ulis were fined $645. Johnson has agreed to pay a fine of the same amount, but a sentencing document for him did not appear in electronic court records Monday.

The same plea deals and fines were announced Sept. 6 for Iowa football player Aaron Blom, Iowa baseball player Gehrig Christensen and Iowa State football players Dodge Sauser, Hunter Dekkers and Jake Remsburg.

Blom, Christensen and Sauser are no longer members of their teams. Dekkers and Remsburg remain on the ISU football roster but have not played this season. Dekkers, a quarterback, and Remsburg, an offensive linemen, were projected starters.

In addition to criminal charges, all athletes involved in sports wagering were subject to NCAA penalties ranging from suspensions of varying lengths to permanent ineligibility.

Since Aug. 1, nine athletes from Iowa State and six from Iowa have been charged in the investigation announced in May. Two Iowa athletic staff members also were charged. The state Division of Criminal Investigation has not commented on the circumstances triggering the investigation.

All of the athletes were alleged to have registered or DraftKings sports wagering app accounts under the names of other people, usually family members, to disguise their identities as NCAA athletes and the fact they were under the legal gambling age of 21 at the time.

Prosecutors originally charged the athletes with tampering with records, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison and fines.

Bruce and Bracy transferred to other schools after last season. Oklahoma State suspended Bruce and Troy suspended Bracy after the gambling charges were filed. Ulis transferred to Nebraska and was listed on the Cornhuskers' roster Monday. Those three, plus Johnson, were accused of wagering on Iowa football or basketball games, or both, including some in which they played.

Legal proceedings have ended against the six Iowa athletes who were charged. Cases involving a student manager in football and another in men's basketball continue.

Cases involving six Iowa State athletes continue in Ames, where the university is located.

Football players Jirehl Brock and Isaiah Lee waived preliminary hearings. No future hearings for them were listed in court records. Football player DeShawn Hanika has yet to make an appearance. Brock and Lee no longer are with the Cyclones. Hanika remains on the roster.

Basketball player Jeremiah Williams has a preliminary hearing set this week. Williams missed last season because of injury after transferring from Temple. He left last season and was listed on Rutgers' roster Monday.

Wrestler Paniro Johnson and football player Eyioma Uwazurike each face a felony identity theft charge in addition to one each for tampering with records. Both have entered not guilty pleas and are scheduled to make court appearances next month. Uwazurike is on the Denver Broncos roster and suspended by the NFL for wagering on Broncos games last year.

NY Giants Draft Prospects

So, now we shall see what the Giant brain trust has in mind . The chances of not getting an impact player are low. I believe the first 4 picks will hold serve tonight.

1) Bears Williams
2) Wash. Daniels
3) Pats. Maye
4) Ariz. Harrison Jr.
After that Chargers, are,on the clock. Hard to say. I would not use the 6th pick on QB JJ McCarthy. I don't love him ,but maybe the Giant's want him. I want one of three players.
The player I would love to see the Giants take is Brock Bowers TE Georgia, tremendous upside. If the Chargers, were to take him I would select Joe Alt T ND, and keep improving the line, our biggest area,of concern, although a couple of solid free agent signings. IF not, Rome Odunze WR, Washington. He by all accounts is one of the 3 best WRs in the draft. For me Malik Nabers WR from LSU will be Odell part two. At the end of the day I believe the Giants will use their pick on Nabers over Odunze. The Jets in fact may land Bowers. If available I would take QB Bo Nix Oregon in the 2nd round. Doubt he will still be on the
Board. This is going to be interesting. Hate to see the Cowboys or Eagles trade up and steal Bowers. If no QB we do need a WR in one of first few rounds. Definitely need a CB and Safety in this draft.

So, Bowers or Odunze as the new offensive weapon or Alt for O line stability..

Jack Bosworth is only one stroke off the individual lead.

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – The Pirates will be pursuing their second BIG EAST title in three years during Monday's final round, and they'll do so as the team leaders by two strokes after 36 holes of the 2024 BIG EAST Championship at Riverton Pointe Country Club.

Seton Hall received big rounds from both Jack Bosworth (Simsbury, Conn.) and Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) during Sunday's second round. Bosworth had five birdies in round two, including one on the 18th hole in front of a large Seton Hall contingent, to fuel an even-par, 72. For the tournament, Bosworth is tied for third among all individual golfers with a 1-under-par, 71-72-143. He trails a duo of individual leaders by only one stroke with 18 holes left to play.

Sun also had five birdies to power his second-straight even-par, 72. For the tournament, he's just one stroke behind Bosworth and tied for sixth place with an even-par, 72-72-144.

Like Sun, the Pirates as a whole showed their consistency, firing their second-consecutive 4-over-par, 292. Only Xavier (even) and Butler (+3) had better rounds on Sunday. After 36 holes, The Hall has a two-stroke lead on the field at 8-over-par with a 292-292-584. Butler is two strokes behind at 10-over-par, while Villanova is third at 14-over-par.

Defending champion and top-ranked Marquette faded to fourth place at 17-over-par.

Wenliang Xie (Burbank, Calif.) was 2-under-par on the front nine, but 4-over on the back. The graduate student shot a 2-over-par, 74, on Sunday and is now tied for sixth overall. For the tournament, he's tied with Sun at even-par with a 70-74-144.

David Lally (Wicklow, Ireland) had a nice bounce-back round on Sunday. The sophomore had four birdies in route to a 2-over-par, 74, a five-stroke improvement from round one. For the tournament, he's 9-over-par with a 79-74-153.

Junior George Fricker (Woodbridge, England) was marooned by one bad hole, but was otherwise solid on Sunday. He shot a 6-over-par, 78, in round two. For the championship, he's 13-over-par with a 79-78-157.

Talent - 2024/2025

All is not lost. I look strictly at the Talent level - HS Rankings to assess a team on paper. Talent always wins in the end, and it is nearly impossible to win without it. (exception St. Peters with Shaheen)

This is what we have so far....We will have the talent box checked. Of course, there are intangibles and exceptions.

Middleton - Top 50
Coleman - Top 125
Prince - Top 125
Gus Yalden - Top 125
Godswill - Top 125
Felton - Top 150

Am I missing anyone?

Sylvester, Balzan Lead Pirates Past Butler, 7-3

Tough season to date for the men

resize

Indianapolis, Ind.Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI and Jackson Balzan (Medford, N.J.) threw five innings and tied a season high with seven strikeouts as Seton Hall defeated Butler, 7-3, in the series opener on Friday afternoon.

Seton Hall (20-22, 3-7 BIG EAST) posted 15 hits, a season best for the Pirates in a BIG EAST game this season, and hit four home runs as a team. Five Pirates registered multi-hit games. Out of the bullpen, Nate Espelin (Belmont, Mass.) three a scoreless sixth inning and Michael Gillen (Rochelle Park, N.J.) allowed only two baserunners in a three-inning save with four strikeouts.

How It Happened

Seton Hall looked to shake out of their offensive slump early as Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) and Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) led off the game with back-to-back base hits but they were both left stranded. It was Butler that scored first, going ahead 1-0 on a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.

Balzan worked scoreless frames in the second and third innings before the offense found life. Sylvester led off the fourth inning with a single and Cole Zak (Cleveland, Ohio) followed him with his fourth home run of the season that put the Pirates in front, 2-1. Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) was the next batter and he doubled down the left field line that kept the rally going. Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) then stepped to the plate and mashed his 19th career home run that extended Seton Hall's lead to 4-1.

After Balzan worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth, Sylvester hit his first home run of the afternoon over the left field fence that scored Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) and made it 6-1 Pirates. The Bulldogs cut into their deficit in the bottom of the fifth with two runs that trimmed the Seton Hall lead to 6-3 before Balzan retired the side and prevented further damage.

Espelin kept it a 6-3 game in the sixth and Gillen came on in the seventh where he retired the side. After Gillen blanked the Bulldogs again in the eighth, Sylvester added an insurance run in the ninth with a solo home run that led off the inning.

Up Next

Game two of the three game series between Seton Hall and Butler will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
