Seton Hall traveled up the I-95 corridor to Rhode Island Wednesday evening and delivered the 23rd ranked Providence Friars their first home loss of the season, 61-57, in front of 11,458 fans at the Amica
Mutual Pavilion.

The AMP has proved to hold one of the best home court advantages in college basketball in recent years as Providence has only lost four home games in the last three seasons, but the Pirates have been
unphased by the Renaissance City as they have handed Providence two of those losses, including a 82-58 beatdown last season over the then 20th ranked home team.

Providence Head Coach Kim English called Seton Hall a “throwback Big East team” because of their toughness and fight before the game and got exactly that as the Pirates forced 14 turnovers, outrebounded the bigger Friars 38-36, including 11-6 on the offensive glass, and held their ranked opponent to just 23.5% shooting from behind the arc (4-17).

Seton Hall jumped out to an 8-2 lead behind threes from senior guards Kadary Richmond and Dylan Addae-Wusu before Providence answered with a 17-2 run to take a 19-10 advantage with just under 12
minutes remaining in the first half.

The Hall’s physicality along with a switch to a zone defense stymied Providence’s offensive rhythm, propelling the Pirates on a 19-5 run, including holding the Friars to just one field goal over the final eight
minutes, to take a 29-24 lead into halftime.

In typical Big East fashion, both teams battled for much of the second stanza with Providence regaining the lead for the first time in the half, 47-46, on a layup from Corey Floyd off the alley-oop from Devin
Carter with just under seven minutes remaining to force Seton Hall Head Coach Shaheen Holloway to call a timeout.

On its heels in hostile territory and getting no points and just a handful of counting stats from its bench players, Seton Hall’s core was close to running on empty to close the game as the four starters outside of the center position logged 146 of a possible 161 minutes (91%).

The Pirates showed resilience and held tight to secure the victory aided in part by graduate guard Al-Amir Dawes scoring seven of his 12 points in the final five minutes. Dawes connected on two free throws
after drawing a foul driving into the paint with 4:40 remaining and followed it up on the next possession with a triple from the wing for a 55-51 lead, which Seton Hall would not surrender the rest of the way.

With a chance to tie the game at 59 -59 in the closing seconds, Josh Oduro missed a hook shot that was tightly contested by graduate center Jaden Bediako and Addae-Wusu corralled the defensive rebound
before connecting on two free throws for the 61-57 final margin.

Senior wing Dre Davis scored a team high 17 points, including 2-2 from long distance, senior guard Kadary Richmond stuffed the stat sheet in his typical fashion, pacing the Hall with 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Addae-Wusu contributed 12 points and 11 boards.

Providence was led by Oduro’s game-high 23 points, while Devin Carter was the only other Friar in double figures, notching 10 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) scored a game-high 21 points, but the Pirates couldn't find their offensive footing for a third straight game in a 50-45 loss to Villanova on Wednesday.

The Pirates shot under 30 percent from the floor for a second straight game and were just 2-for-12 from three-point range. Defensively, The Hall was brilliant again, holding a seventh consecutive opponent under 55 points.

The Hall trailed by 10 points with under 4:00 minutes left and managed to cut its deficit to just four points, but couldn't complete the comeback.

Baines scored a game-high 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds with three blocks.

Senior Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) didn't put up gaudy numbers, but played excellent defense on Villanova's Lucy Olsen. Olsen, the BIG EAST's leader in scoring, managed only 10 points on 4-for-17 shooting against Wright and the Pirates.

AGAINST BUTLER
Seton Hall has largely dominated the all-time series against Butler, but the Bulldogs snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Pirates last season. The Hall routed the Bulldogs on New Year's Eve in Walsh Gym, 79-45, but in Hinkle, Butler outlasted the Pirates without Lauren Park-Lane, 76-64, on Feb. 24. The Hall owns a 16-6 all-time series lead. The Pirates are 5-5 all-time at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

SCOUTING BUTLER
In its first season under head coach Austin Parkinson, Butler enjoyed a 10-win improvement, including six in BIG EAST play – its most since 2019-20. The Bulldogs welcome back two of their top three scorers from a year ago including Sydney Jaynes and Anna Mortag. Butler went 11-19 overall and 6-14 in BIG EAST play to tie for eighth in the standings.

The Bulldogs return half of their scoring from last season with eight returners back in the locker room. Of the 14 players that saw court time from the 2022-23 campaign, the eight returners provided BU with 921 points and the seven players that departed accounted for 911 points. The Bulldogs have eight players on the roster standing 6-0 or taller, the most of any team at Butler over the last 15 years. Four of the eight are 6-3 or taller. Butler added a pair of Big Ten transfers in Michigan's Ari Wiggins and Purdue's Lilly Stoddard.

The Bulldogs were picked to finish eighth in the BIG EAST this year according to the preseason coaches' poll.

Butler is off to a solid start this season and enters the weekend with a 8-5 overall record and a 0-2 mark in BIG EAST play. The Bulldogs opened conference play with an 88-62 loss at No. 17 Connecticut on Dec. 18. Most recently, they lost a defensive battle to Georgetown, 60-55, on Wednesday. Caroline Strande currently leads the team with 15.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

THE STORY:
Seton Hall shot 45.5 percent in the opening quarter, but was badly out-rebounded by Villanova, including a 5-to-0 deficit on the offensive glass. A jumper by A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill.) gave The Hall an 11-6 lead with 3:28 left, but the Wildcats closed the opening quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 14-11 lead into the second.

Down 18-13, The Hall scored six straight, and a step-back jumper by Baines gave it a 19-18 lead with 5:36 to go before halftime. Villanova responded with an 8-0 run to speed back ahead, 26-19, with 2:48 left before the break. An offensive rebound and score by Shailyn Pinkney (East Hartford, Conn.) ended the Villanova run and The Hall found itself down, 26-21, after 20 minutes.

After putting up 27 three-point attempts against Providence, The Hall shot just five in the first half against Villanova.

Villanova opened the second half with a 9-2 run to grab a 35-23 lead with 3:47 left in the third. Seton Hall rallied with a 7-0 burst of its own, and a driving layup by Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) cut its deficit to 35-30 and forced a Wildcats timeout with 1:30 to go in the quarter.

The Wildcats led by as many as 10 in the fourth quarter, but the Pirates went on a run late and a free throw by Baines with 1:00 left in the contest cut The Hall's deficit to only four, 47-43. Villanova, however, was able to ice the game on the free-throw line.

THE NUMBERS:

• Seton Hall was 18-for-62 (29.0%) from the floor for the game, while Villanova was 17-for-57 (29.8%). The Hall was 2-for-12 (16.7%) from three-point range, while the Wildcats were 7-for-24 (29.2%).
• Baines had a game-high 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting with seven rebounds, three blocks and two assists.
• Villanova out-rebounded The Hall, 44-to-41, but the Pirates had a 16-to-15 edge on the offensive glass.
• Seton Hall was 7-for-10 (70.0%) from the free-throw line, while Villanova was 9-for-14 (64.3%).
• Seton Hall forced 15 turnovers, while the Wildcats forced 12, but Villanova had an 11-to-4 advantage in points-off-turnovers.

THE NOTES:

• Seton Hall drops to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in conference games, while Villanova improves to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play.
• The Hall is now 29-46 all-time against Villanova and has dropped the last four games in the series.
• The Pirates have now held seven consecutive opponents under 55 points. They've held nine opponents overall under 55 points in only 14 games so far this season.
• Seton Hall held Villanova to just 29.8 percent shooting from the floor, which is the lowest mark for a BIG EAST opponent this season and the third-lowest of any Pirate opponent.
