Former Wisconsin college basketball player Walt McGrory dead at 24

Former Wisconsin basketball player Walt McGrory died Saturday after a battle with a rare pediatric bone cancer.

He was 24.

“His soul was freed to continue his great mission — to live and help others live full, healthy lives,” it was announced on his Instagram account Monday.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound guard played in 37 games for the Badgers from 2017-21 and was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten student.

He announced he was planning to transfer to South Dakota in April 2021 but was diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Walt McGrory,” Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said Monday in a statement.

“The courage and fight that Walt demonstrated throughout his two-year battle with cancer was an inspiration to us all. Walt never quit. Instead, he chose to fight every day and made the most of his circumstances by sharing his journey and inspiring others. Walt was a beloved member of our team and the Badger family, and we will miss him dearly.”

McGrory was a standout at Edina High School in Minnesota, where he is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,126 points.

He joined the Badgers as a walk-on in 2017 before he transferred to the University of South Dakota in April 2021.

McGrory averaged 26.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game during his senior season.

In August 2021, five months after he transferred to South Dakota, McGrory announced he was diagnosed he was battling bone cancer.

Asked earlier in 2023 if he was in denial when he heard his diagnosis, McGrory told KARE 11 in Minnesota, “I don’t know if it’s denial. It’s just more like, ‘Well, this will be over soon.’ I don’t really need to think about it much.”

He had his left leg amputated in April.

“I didn’t look down right away,” McGrory said. “I mean, I had the blanket over it and I didn’t really want to look at it for the first few days.

“I’m not ashamed of it or anything. I’ll go to Lifetime Fitness or the gym and I’ll have the crutches.”

McGrory had posted updates about his cancer journey through his social media page, often snapping photos during his treatments.

In July 2022, McGrory said the osteosarcoma, once in remission, had returned and spread within his body

“Put it out there to the world, the universe, I guess — that you want to keep living, you know? You kind of do whatever it takes to keep going,” he said, adding “That makes me a lot stronger than I’d be on my own.”

He is survived by his parents, Matthew and Jean, and his sister Mary Claire, who played basketball at Creighton.

I guess Bidenomics really wasn't a good marketing strategy. President failing on multiple fronts, but what don't they get...he's old and it's obvious that he has trouble even functioning. It's obvious that the ONLY candidate he can beat in 2024 is Trump.

The messaging on Ukraine aid has been terrible...."Putin is laughing at us"....do Americans really care when the border is being over-run?

Beleaguered Backcourt Propels Hall To Road Victory

By Zack Cziryak

Al-Amir Dawes and Dylan Addae-Wusu paced a starting five that all tallied double-figure point totals in a “neutral site” victory for the Seton Hall men’s basketball team on Sunday night.

Dawes dropped 25 points on 9-16 shooting, including 4-11 from beyond the arc, while Addae-Wusu played his best game as a Pirate with 20 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals to seal a 93-87 victory over the Missouri Tigers in Kansas City, Mo.

Dawes knocked down a 3 pointer at the 18:18 mark to start off the game’s scoring and followed up immediately with a second to stake a 6-3 lead early before the Hall fell behind 16-10 midway through the first half. Back-to-back three-pointers from Addae-Wusu would tie the game and jumpstart an 18-5 run that would see the Pirates take a lead they would never relinquish.

Dre Davis contributed 19 points and 8 rebounds, Kadary Richmond added 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and Jaden Bediako tallied 11 points and 8 rebounds to round out the PIrate starters.

Tamar Bates poured in 22 points for the Tigers while Sean East II put up 16 with 6 assists and Nick Honor contributed 14 points.

An 11-3 run to start the second half would help propel the Pirates to a double-digit lead that would expand to as many as 19 with under six minutes remaining before the Tigers clawed back in the game to cut the deficit to as few as four late in the game.

The Pirate victory was fueled by a blistering 58.9% from the floor compared to 45.2% from Missouri, which was outrebounded by Seton Hall 30-24.

The Hall assisted on 16 of 33 baskets but gave the ball away an uncharacteristic 14 times as the Missouri’s press forced several turnovers as the Tigers closed the gap late in the game.

The victory brings the Pirates to 7-4 overall and marks the first of the year for the Hall against a power conference team as well as away from the Prudential Center.

The Pirates will kick off Big East Conference play Wednesday night back in Newark, N.J. against the reigning national champion Connecticut Huskies. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

Shoutout for Dylan

I thought a thread on Dylan’s game was due after last night. He has been ripped on the board along with Dawes, but even more. I have been a supporter since he signed. LBP43 can confirm my enthusiasm for him as I remind him across the aisle while his son has his other ear. The last few games have been tough but man did he explode yesterday.

The shooting of Dawes at 4-11 after what he did over the last 4 games was refreshing, but Dylan’s 4-6 from three was great. He hit both shots inside the arch too. He was all over the court on D and in the right place when we had the ball. 6 assists to only 2 TO and 3 steals. Add in 6 rebounds with two OR as he played that disruptive effective way I remember him at St. Johns. These type of games are what I expected from him. Maybe not to this extent but closer to this than what he’s delivered.

It was also glaring the difference between this senior and how Coleman looks against P6 schools. I think he’s going to be great, but as people wanted him starting him over Dylan, I just don’t see that when I watch IC against P6 teams.

Baines Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

It's Baines' third Honor Roll already this season.

NEW YORK – Seton Hall graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll on Monday for the third time this season.

Baines wasn't needed in the Pirates' rout of FDU on Monday and the extra rest following an ankle injury against CCSU on Dec. 8 proved fruitful. The graduate student erupted for her second double-double of the season against previously unbeaten, No. 23 UNLV on Saturday. Baines was 8-for-11 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line for a game-high 23 points. She also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in Seton Hall's 84-54 rout of the Lady Rebels.

Marquette's Liza Karlen was named BIG EAST Player of the Week. Connecticut's KK Arnold was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. In addition to Baines, members of the Weekly Honor Roll include Connecticut's Aubrey Griffin, Creighton's Emma Ronsiek, Georgetown's Kelsey Ransom and St. John's Jillian Archer.

Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 20 when it opens BIG EAST Conference play in Washington, D.C. against Georgetown. Tip time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. The game will be streamed live by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloHoops subscribers. Michael Stamm and Victor Gonzalez will provide the call for WSOU FM or wsou.net.
