The Hall sets a new record for fewest points allowed during the NCAA era.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Four players scored in double figures as the Seton Hall women's basketball team downed FDU, 67-27, on Monday, holding the Knights to a program record-low in the NCAA-era.

Seton Hall's all-time record for fewest points allowed is 14 against Upsala on Feb. 28, 1974, but tonight's effort ranks as the lowest since the NCAA began sponsoring a women's championship in 1982.

The Hall held FDU to just eight made field goals for the game and 16 percent shooting from the floor.

Offensively, Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) led the charge with 17 points on the strength of 3-for-5 shooting from three-point range. She also had a season-high eight rebounds. I'yanna Lops (Stamford, Conn.), Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) and Brazil Harvey-Carr (Camden, N.J.) all also reached double-figures in scoring and collected season-highs.

THE STORY:
The Pirates started the game slowly, connecting on just one of their first 11 shots, but FDU couldn't take advantage as The Hall's defense tightened. The Hall held the Knights to just 2-for-13 shooting in the first 10 minutes and ended the quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 12-5 advantage into the second.

Leading 16-10, The Hall went on a 10-2 run, and a rebound and put-back by Satterfield gave it a 26-12 lead with 5:00 to go before halftime. The Pirates held the Knights without a field goal for the final 4:38 of the half and took a 30-17 lead into the break. Satterfield scored 13 consecutive points for The Hall between late in the second and early in the third.

In the third, the Pirates pulled away, thanks largely to their stifling defense. The Hall held FDU to just one made field goal (1-for-11) in the quarter and outscored the Knights, 17-5. Seton Hall closed the quarter with a 12-1 run and took a commanding 47-22 lead into the fourth.

The Hall opened the final quarter with a 16-2 run to put FDU away.

  • Gray had 17 points on 7-for-16 shooting, including 3-for-5 from three-point range. She also had a season-high eight rebounds.
  • The Hall out-rebounded FDU, 43-to-35, which included an 18-to-17 edge on the offensive glass and an 18-to-8 advantage in second-chance points.
  • Lops had a season-high 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting to go with six rebounds and a season-best five blocks.
  • Seton Hall was 9-for-12 (75.0%) from the free-throw line, while FDU was 9-for-14 (64.3%).
  • Satterfield tallied a season-high 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting and pulled down five rebounds.
  • Seton Hall forced 18 turnovers, while the Knights forced nine. The Hall had a 16-to-8 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
  • Harvey-Carr notched a season-high 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. She also had two rebounds and two steals.
  • The Pirates had 38 points in the paint, compared to just 10 for FDU.
  • Sophomore Shailyn Pinkney (East Hartford, Conn.) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds to lead all players.

  • Seton Hall has shot better than .400 from the field in all 10 of its games so far this season.
  • The Pirates improve to 122-46 in Walsh Gym during the Bozzella era. Furthermore, the Pirates are now 63-12 against non-conference opponents at home.

What would you do??

In regards to the starting lineup moving forward?

1. Richmond
2. Sanders
3. Coleman
4. Davis
5. Bediako

I would also try and get Davis some time at the 3, his natural position. If Tubek or NgaNga arent ready for the 4, go with EHE and Bediako together.

At this point we need to experiment.

Brown, Richmond, Davis, EHE, Bediako would be interesting.

No emotion/excitement

My fellow Pirates, during Willards early years when we were just plain BAD I still would root like hell for our team and always though "we can win" even when we were terrible, this team this season I watched the game last night and my wife goes why so quiet isnt the game on? I said yeah, but theyre gonna lose again, no excitement like before, i watch this team and if its a blowout i once used to get "pissed" now I just go oh well...... anyone else like that this season?

Dec Tidbits

I now know the complete story behind the Holloway/Copeland flare up and both coaches were to blame, although Sha probably moreso.

This part everyone knows. Holloway felt, and rightfully so, that Copeland breached coaching etiquette by playing most of his starters to the end of the game. But what really upset the Seton Hall coach is that he had the end of his bench on the court including walk-ons in the last sequence or two and Copeland was pressing them to the final buzzer. Holloway said that to Copeland in the handshake line and Copeland responded (can't say how here) in let's say an unpleasant manner and that caught Holloway off guard and he pulled Copeland's arm momentarily. That's a no no and Holloway took full blame for that in the post game.

Copeland, while not explaining what he said also took full blame for the dust up when addressing the media.

I was told before each coach addressed us they were outside the room apologizing to each other and the spat was forgotten by them.

Copeland really started the situation by his on court actions and Holloway did not handle the handshake line properly.

Hobbs…..

Say what you want, but we need to seriously make him the leading candidate as President. Seton Hall‘s long term success academically is going to be tied to Athletics. I know the guy is a political hack, but what he‘s likely learned over these past 2 to 3 years at RU can’t be underestimated. University needs a lot in terms of leadership and vision right now in the rapidly evolving landsacape of D-1 athletics.

LAST GAME
Sophomore Shailyn Pinkney (East Hartford, Conn.) provided a much-needed spark off the bench in the second half to lift the Seton Hall women's basketball team to a 77-46 victory over Central Connecticut State on Friday.

After leading by only 11 at the half, The Hall wore down the Blue Devils after halftime, thanks in large part by the spirited efforts from the bench. Pinkney scored all nine of her points in the second half, including seven in the fourth quarter.

In all, six Pirates scored at least nine points with sophomore Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) leading the way with 17. Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) and Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) had 10 points apiece. A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill.) collected her second double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Seton Hall All-Time vs. the Knights: Seton Hall leads, 14-2
Last Meeting:
Seton Hall 67, FDU 45 (F) – March 17, 2022 (WNIT First Round – Walsh Gym)

AGAINST FDU
Seton Hall and FDU will meet for the 17th time in history on Monday with the Pirates owning a commanding 14-2 all-time series lead. The Hall has won the last five meetings with its last loss coming on Dec. 12, 1991. Most recently, the Pirates routed the Knights in the opening round of the 2022 WNIT, 67-45, in Walsh Gym. FDU did not score in the fourth quarter in that contest.

SCOUTING FDU
The Knights are coming off a 24-8 season where they went 14-2 in conference play. Following a second-straight regular season championship, the Burgundy and Blue finished last season's conference tournament with wins against Central Connecticut State and St. Francis Brooklyn, but fell short in the final against Sacred Heart.

FDU returns zero of five starters from last season, but retained five players who came off the bench: Abby Conklin, Abaigeal Babore, Allie McGinn, Mia Andrews, and Dominique García Blackwood. Adding to the roster, FDU picked up graduate student guard Nickie Carter who had an impressive undergraduate career at Division III, Montclair State where she posted 1,411 points over four years there. The Knights also gained senior forward/center Teneisia Brown, who transferred from Merrimack. FDU was selected to finish fourth in this season's NEC Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Knights enter Monday's contest with a 2-8 record. Their victories have come over Rider and Bloomfield. Most recently, FDU fell at UMES on Saturday, 54-47. The Hall defeated UMES on Dec. 2, 78-54, in Walsh Gym. FDU lost to Georgetown, another common opponent of Seton Hall, earlier this year, 60-45. Brown currently leads the Knights with 10.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

UP NEXT
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, December 16 when it hosts UNLV at historic Walsh Gymnasium in its final non-conference contest of the season. Tip time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The contest will be streamed live by the Pirate Sports Network and available for FloHoops subscribers. Brian Henderson and Matt Soetebeer will have the call for WSOU FM.

Who ya got

Rivalry games are so intense that often you throw out previous statistics and treat the contest as a one game season.

SHU has had the better play recently as seen by this stat from Jerry Carino. But will it hold up Saturday?

NEWARK, N.J. – Senior Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a game-high 21 points, but the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell to Rutgers, 70-63, in the latest iteration of the Garden State Hardwood Classic on Saturday.

In a battle between two of the better defensive teams in the country, Rutgers gained the edge by connecting on a season-high 12 three-pointers. The Hall trailed by 13 with only 2:10 left in the contest, but managed to cut their deficit to just five before ultimately falling short.

Richmond nearly had a double-double finishing with a game-best 21 points on 8-for-18 shooting to go with nine rebounds and four assists.

How it Happened

Defense ruled early on, as an Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) three and a Jaden Bediako (Brampton, Ontario) layup made it a one-point deficit at the first media timeout. Rutgers grew its lead to seven out of the timeout, but the Pirates were able to chip away and scored 12 of the next 17 points to tie the score at 17-17. The Scarlet Knights closed the half on a strong note, eventually extending their lead up to 10 before a Richmond jumper made it a 33-25 halftime deficit for the Pirates.

Rutgers started the second half with back-to-back threes to open up a 14-point edge, prompting a Seton Hall timeout. The Pirates regrouped out of the stoppage, as back-to-back layups from Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) cut the game back to 10. After the Scarlet Knights converted on a mid-range jumper, Richmond cashed in on consecutive field goals to make it a 41-33 deficit with just over 16 minutes to play. After Davis knocked down a couple free throws, the Pirate deficit had been trimmed down to six at the 12 minute mark of the second half.

After the under-12 media timeout, Rutgers ran off a 9-0 run to swell its lead up to 15, 50-35. After much of the second half saw the Scarlet Knights hold a double-digit lead, the Pirates put together one last late push to. With just under 90 seconds remaining, Dylan Addae-Wusu (Bronx, N.Y.) cut the difference into single digits after converting an and-one. Later, Dawes would knock down a three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining to slice the deficit down to six, keeping the Pirates within striking distance. However, the Scarlet Knights were able to convert on their free throws to stave off Seton Hall to claim the win.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Pirates shot 36 percent from the floor as a team and allowed Rutgers to shoot 41 percent
  • The Hall outrebounded Rutgers by three, 42-39. Of the Pirates' 42 rebounds, 18 of them came on the offensive glass
  • Seton Hall was whistled for 14 personal fouls compared to the 23 called against the Scarlet Knights
  • The Pirates picked up 34 points in the paint compared to Rutgers' 18
News & Notes
  • Richmond narrowly missed his fifth career double-double, finishing with 21 points and nine assists
  • Richmond has surpassed the 20-point mark twice in his last three outings
  • Bediako's 11 rebounds matched his season-high which was set back on Nov. 24 against Iowa
  • Of Davis' six rebounds, five came on the offensive glass to set a new season-best
Up Next
The Pirates will remain home to host Monmouth on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Prudential Center at 6:30 p.m.

If I could change one thing about the team....

This goes far beyond last night. It involves the same aspect of the game on both offense and defense. I've watched this happen all game every game. When we play high level teams and the local lower-level schools. We can escape with this playing the lower level teams, hence the 5-4 record, 0-4 against majors. It has driven me crazy over the years and this year has been the worse on both sides of the ball. I'm talking about leaving your man wide open, playing 10+ feet from 3 point shooters. There's no need for this. I really just don't get it. There were times when the ball was at the top of the key and an RU player was just sitting in the corner waiting for a pass and our defender was near the paint. Swing pass, and a wide-open step in three was launched and our defender was still 5+ feet away running towards him. WHY I just don't understand this. Typically, this happens without even a guy driving to the basket. I can slightly understand that, if a guy is driving to slide toward him, but you better be able to get your ass back so if your guy catches the ball, you're in his face. I bet at least 15 threes launched from RU players last night where we weren't near them as they took the shot. This is unacceptable.

Conversely our threes are usually taken not from a play based on getting Dawes, Dre or even Sanders or Coleman a catch and shoot three, after passing the ball to a guy coming off a screen. How about a drive and kick out? Has Sanders, who has a great shot ever taken a catch and shoot three after running off a screen? I don't remember one. Run some players for the shooters. They are so often taken with a Pirate in a one on one trying to shake off a defender for a step back three, or some other pull up off the dribble around a pick. This is why we see 12-24 for RU and 3-20 for us. Did Dawes actually take 15 threes??

STAY WITH YOUR MAN AND STOP OVERPLAYING.

3PT Woes: Coaching or Talent?

Seton Hall is now 299th in the country in 3PT%, 323rd in 3PA:FGA ratio, 334th in % of points from 3. Yikes. You better have some brilliant offensive scheme if you're going to be competitive with that lack of production in this day and age.

And not to mention our defense has been terrible out there as well.

Rutgers: Outscored 36-9 (12/24 vs. 3/20)
Baylor: Outscored 30-12 (10/22 vs. 4/13)
Iowa: 24-21 SHU (8/27 vs. 7/19) but a misleading volume stat with awful %)
USC: Outscored 30-9 (10/23 vs. 3/16)

That's .443 against us (39/88) in those 4 games and every team shot it well. Insane. Meanwhile The Hall shot .237 (18/76) and never more than .307 in a single game. I mean...

Al-Amir Dawes came into this year a career .375 3PT shooter. He's at .317 and was 8/37 in those 4 games.

Dyan Addae-Wusu came into this year a career .350 3PT shooter. He's at .286 and was 6/20 in those 4 games.

Honest question about reffing (I come in peace I swear):

A lot of the RU fans (myself included) thought the game was called inconsistently.

It seemed to us that the refs where calling touch fouls on us time-after-time and allowed your defenders to bump our guys repeatedly. And, that this uneven officiating helped shu stay within reach in the second half (particularly when shu went on a scoring drought you were getting to the line via touch fouls). Again , the perspective from many RU fans

As the opposing fanbase - do you think there is any validity to this? Do you think the RU fans have a point?

OR

Did you see the exact opposite (did SHU get hosed by the refs?)

or maybe you feel the refs had no impact either way ?

I ask this because I am honestly curious how opposing fanbases observe the same game

Objective feedback appreciated
