Pirates Nearly Equalize Late In Loss At Lafayette

resize

Easton, Pa. -- The Seton Hall women's soccer team searched for the equalizer and possessed the ball for most of the second half but the Pirates ultimately came up short as they fell to Lafayette, 1-0, on Thursday evening.

Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) had a game-high four shots and two shots on goal for the Pirates (3-4-1).

How It Happened

Lafayette scored in the 16th minute in what was a strong first half for the Leopards, where the finished with a 3-1 edge in shots. The lone shot of the half for The Hall was Camryn Williams (Doylestown, Pa.) in the 24th minute.

Lafayette put up the first shot of the second half but it would be the only attempt that the Seton Hall defense would allow the rest of the way. Tavana would take the Pirates' next three shots and two were on target but none of them could find the back of the net. The Hall finished with a 5-2 advantage in shots in the second stanza and their final shot on goal came from sophomore Gia Milano (Scotch Plains, N.J.), whose strike from outside the box hit the cross bar. Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England) followed the miss with a shot attempt of her own but she wasn't able to put enough behind it to score.

Tavana, senior Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany) and freshman Kylie Ray (Ramsey, N.J.) played the full 90 minute for The Hall.

Up Next

The Pirates return to Owen T. Carroll FIeld on Sunday when they host Yale at 1 p.m.

Season ticket holders who sold tickets via Ticketmaster last year

After Ticketmaster announcement that they had a cyber attack over the summer, it behooves you to create a Fraud alert with Experia. When the level of reported " income" from online sales dropped from $10,000 to $600, in 2022, in order sell your tickets, you needed to provide Ticketmaster with your SS#. Considering I sold my tickets for less than what I paid for them, and well under the $600 threshold, it's complete over reach and BS that this has to happen. I received an alert that my SS# was found on the dark web from one of my credit cards.

BE CAREFUL everyone who did this!!

Veer Singh

'Veer' Singh opted to stay close to home and attend the Hall over a slew of colleges offers from the likes of California, Cincinnati, Creighton, Rutgers, Temple and Villanova. He also received interest from Louisville, Miami and Virginia.

Singh was attracted to Seton Hall's blue-collar atmosphere saying, "Coach Willard showed me that the program wasn't all glitz and glamor, it was more about working hard every day, getting your hands dirty and getting after it. With me coming from an immigrant family that is why you come to the United States and that is the background that I most relate to."

Singh's blue collar attitude towards the game is evident saying, "Coming from an immigrant family, basketball was more my personal thing, it wasn't something my parents wanted for me. I have taken on the initiative to find resources and do what I have to do to be successful. It's hard but it's rewarding because it's not like someone else wanted it for me. I wanted it for myself."

Renee Singh, Veer's mother, moved to the metropolitan area from Georgia in the fall of 2014 to be closer to her son and have more opportunities to watch him play.

"I did not want to make her move all the way up north and then leave for some place where she would not get a chance to see me play," he said.

His mother has been impressed with his talent and supportive of his interest in the sport, but Veer laughs when talking about his mom's knowledge of the game saying, "she can't give me insight on how it's played, she doesn't even call it shooting the ball, she calls is throwing."

Singh will come to the South Orange campus this summer familiar with a few of his future teammates, having been a part of the New York Lightning AAU program with current Pirate freshmen Khadeen Carrington and Angel Delgado.

"Those two guys were established when I was coming up. I looked up to them on the spring and summer circuits. No one knew what Angel was capable of outside of our program and then he had that breakout EYBL season where led the league in rebounds, which put him on the map. Then he went to some national camps and really saw his stock rise. As for Khadeen, he just knows how to play. Being the leading scorer in Bishop Loughlin history is impressive."

While visiting the Seton Hall campus in September, Singh had the opportunity to learn more about the rest of the squad outside of Carrington and Delgado.

"I was familiar with Ismael [Sanogo] having played in New Jersey and the visit gave me a chance to get to know him better as well as meeting guys like Desi and Isaiah. Desi and I are both from the Bronx so it was a good fit, we jelled well. I have seen what they all can do on the court; I know what their strengths are so there won't be any surprises. I know them as people and as basketball players."

Singh's decision to commit to the BIG EAST program was aided through strong relationships with Associate Head Coach Shaheen Holloway and Assistant Coach Fred Hill.

"With his reputation as a McDonald's All-American and being a great point guard who could handle the ball like it was on a string, Coach Sha is great with skill development. On a visit I saw what Coach Sha was doing with the guy's ball handling and that's a part of my game I need to develop; I thought that is something he could really help me improve upon."

"Coach Hill has been around for a while and that experience will really help me too."

Singh's respect for his mentors goes beyond the basketball court as he had high praise for Thurgood Marshall Principal Sean Davenport as well.

"He has been great; he was really helpful in getting me ready to graduate early. He has help prepare me for college and made sure my schedule had all the right classes needed."

When Singh arrives at Seton Hall he projects as a small forward/wing who will be able to spread the floor with range beyond the three point line. He has the ability to fill up a stat sheet contributing on the boards with his high motor and energy while getting others involved with an underrated passing game and a knack for finding the open man.

"With guys like Isaiah and Khadeen, who can get in the lane, it makes me difficult to defend because the defense has to respect my ability to shoot. With my height defenses have to close out that much quicker and pay that much more attention to my jumper. I think that my height will help me look over the defense and allow me to see lanes to get my teammates good looks."

Moving forward Singh will have to work on his body as he prepares for the rigors of a full Big-East schedule, needing to add strength and improve his stamina.

"My job is to go in there as a freshman and start off at the bottom of the totem pole and prove myself. I don't look into expectations; I try and control what I can control. I am comfortable being uncomfortable so being at the bottom is what drives me and makes me work harder."

With his talent and that kind of attitude don't expect Seton Hall's newest recruit to 'be at the bottom' for long.

Loiselle, Walsh Power Pirates to Four-Set Win

TOWSON, MD. – Sophomore Maddy Loiselle (Lutz, Fla.) had a career-high 17 kills and the Seton Hall women's volleyball team rallied from a set down to defeat Coppin State, 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-23), in the opening match of the Towson Invitational on Friday.

The Pirates' victory is their fourth straight and pushes them above .500 for the first time this season at 4-3.

Loiselle had a career-high in kills for her second straight match, finishing with a match-high 17 to go with only three attack errors and a .438 attack percentage.

Both Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) collected double-doubles. Walsh matched her season-high with 14 kills to go with only three attack errors, 10 digs and two blocks. Klungel had a team-best 27 assists along with 12 digs and two aces.

SET 1:
Trailing 17-13 in the opening set, The Hall scored six of the next eight points, and a kill by Walsh tied the contest at 19 points apiece. Coppin State, however, bounced back with two straight points to jump back ahead, 21-19, and force a Seton Hall timeout. The Eagles never trailed again, going on to win the opening set, 25-22. The Hall lost the opening set despite hitting .429 as a team. In fact, the teams only committed four attack errors combined. Contributing to the Pirates' woes were five service errors.

SET 2:
Coppin State started fast again in set two, but The Hall came charging back. Down 7-6 early, the Pirates went on an 11-1 run, thanks largely to five Eagles attack errors, to grab a commanding 17-8 advantage in set two. The Hall went on to a 25-17 victory. The Pirates held Coppin State to only a .061 attack percentage in set two.

SET 3:
Seton Hall jumped out to an 11-6 lead in set three, but Coppin State responded with a 7-0 run to grab a 13-11 advantage. Trailing 18-17, the Pirates scored six of the next eight points to grab a 23-20 lead and force an Eagles timeout. Up 24-21, a kill by Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hawaii) slammed home a kill to give The Hall a 2-1 match lead.

SET 4:
Coppin State jumped out to a 10-5 lead in set four and forced an early Seton Hall timeout. Trailing 19-14, The Hall went on an 8-2 run to grab a 22-21 lead. With the score tied at 23, a Coppin State attack error put the Pirates in match point, and then an Eagles bad set provided the match-winning point.

Update on purchase and shipment of The Hall hats

This venture was an undertaking by two passionate alumni, John Colantoni and Jamie Bosworth. A fan run initiative to support NIL, this was not supported by the university. It wasn’t discouraged, but it was done without university help and is a separate NIL venture. The importance of that is that John and Jamie were responsible for concept to shipment and everything in between.

The demand fell far short of expectations (~90% if you want a number) and far short the production run for G-Fore to ship directly to buyers. Because of this, individual shipments are now on them. As a measure of goodwill, they have taken on the financial burden so that 100% of your purchase price is supporting the NIL effort as the cost of the hats and shipping are borne by them.

Now that you have two very successful alumni who run multiple businesses responsible for shipping individual hats, I hope that you understand the delay. In fact, the hats have been in Fort Lauderdale for some time while John has been in Europe for extended business and a little rest and relaxation, but that doesn’t get you the hats.

To remedy this, the hats are on their way to NJ to a third alumnus, myself. I will be taking on the distribution of the hats. This is certainly not because I have all the time in the world as I have a career, twins where I’m soccer coach and personal Uber and, well, a pretty full life/schedule. But my support for Seton Hall and friendship with/respect for John and Jamie led to me burying myself deep into this venture. So now I have inserted myself where, I remind you, 100% of your purchase price is being donated to the school.

Had the venture not run at 10% of expectations, the hats would be in your hands directly. That’s the bad news. The good news is that they are very much on their way to being in your hands shortly. The expectation was that two alumni had an idea that would put $75,000 into NIL (1,000 hats, $75 NIL donation per $105 purchase, $30 for cost and shipping). The reality is that just over 100 hats were sold, still putting over $10k directly to NIL with the cost of hats/shipping being borne by the volunteers.

This is not meant to make excuses or garner attaboys. This is transparency to help make you aware of the efforts that are made behind the scenes by caring alumni who are not in the apparel or shipping industries. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Go Pirates.
