#1 in the country DI in PPG defense

The D has been terrific and the guys not only play their asses off on D but just about every player is built for the D we play. Middleton is a real standout. But I cant think of anyone who isnt busting their gut on D. Nice to see Toumi cool it on the fouls on Sat.

This has been a major positive. They get after it, switch well, seem to communicate well, they look cohesive on that end. You can see that regardless of opponent caliber. Sha’s got a bunch of long athletic defenders and mobile bigs.

Can we turn that defense into offense more?

In at least 2 of the 3 games, probably all 3 games, this week we will be facing far superior competition to anything we've faced so far. Exciting challenge for the defense this week.
I would suspect that none of the other teams in Charleston played much tougher completion than we did so early in the season. We shall see starting Thursday.

I could be wrong, but I would think VCU played a much tougher team when they played Boston College
I would think Vanderbilt played a much tougher team when they played Cal
I would think played a much tougher team in Washington

2 of those 3 teams will be our opponents and they've all played power conference schools when the best team we've played is Hofstra. I would just think that means we are more of an unknown vs better teams. Every single one of those games was a double digit win for the team that we will face.

According to Kenpom, none of those teams rate all that much better than Hofstra. I know it’s early but Washington is the only team on that list that is better than #100 at #84. Don’t be fooled by the name. How bad was Mizzu last year?

I'm going by what I presume to be schools that have paid for better athletes. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm guessing BC, Cal and Washington have paid for better athletes than SPU, Fordham and Hofstra. I agree that I can be 100% wrong, but with it being so early in the season I'm not looking at numbers right now.

The metrics so early are dicey but BC is #141 in KP.. Hofstra is #133.

VCU is #35 with a #320 SOS. Seton Hall is #97 with a #270 SOS.

We know what our issues are, I don’t see how they’re sufficiently fixed to win Thursday but here’s hoping!

should mean that some offensive improvement can rip the scale. however we've played bad teams so far so cant put too much stock in the defense yet

Our PPG average against, as our low-scoring offense, is driven by the tempo our games have been played at as much as anything else.

That's not to say we've haven't played very well defensively but when you play at the sixth slowest pace in D-I, you're not going to score or allow many points.

As for Ken Pom, delete it from your laptop. It's almost meaningless with such a small sample size. VCU looks to be very good and so does Nevada. They've cruised through their opponents -- something we've done once in four games.

Vandy is harder to read as they have a new coach and poor recent track record. In beating Cal, they defeated one of the few D-I teams that has been worse than them in recent years.

Still #1 at 50.6. The offense will improve as we witnessed last night against a great defensive team. If we continue to D at this level, we'll be in most games.
