Lets Go Pirates.

Let's support this young lady as well as the team.

Go Pirates!

We lead 29-20 at the half. Very strong on the boards, missing too many darned chippies. If we get this dialed in next quarter, we break away.

Strong defense, strong on the glass, points in the paint. The effort has been focused on keeping the Friars from launching threes.

2:15 to play and we are slipping. Only an 8 point lead. Turnovers and missed shots.

Agreed. Been like this all year. If she doesn't play like she did last season the team will not reach the same heights they did in 2014/15.

They won a Big East road game to start the season. That's the best statement about the game.

Let's hope what we saw was Christmas-break rust.

Tiffany Jones had double-double with 13 & 10, and the team was able to grind it out. Good teams do that on bad days.

However, TRS is simply taking too many shots that are way too long. She was 0-7 on threes. Counting today, she is 10-52 in her last eight games (since they hit the road for Texas.) She really needs to look at video from early last season and her sophomore season to see how she was setting when shooting.

They missed many easy shots, which they had generally put behind them. Fortunately, they focused on rebounding.

So it's the first game with lots of room for improvement. They now have to get to Omaha and play in less than 48 hours. Let's hope the weather cooperates with the Pirates.

We'll take the win and now off to Omaha - closer to the Pacific then the Jersey Shore.

Taylor Byrne had a nice game - she'll be a star for us. Tab's gotta get it going though- need the scoring.

Just sent out an invite to Women's Basketball Sunday - January 24th . Dan will post it- pre-game dining , raffle, talk by Tony B. Reasonably priced

Hope all you fellow die-hards can make it.

If our perimeter game doesn't pick up we're going to be more of a one dimensional offensive team compared to last year's multi- dimensional one. We did win a conference game on the road and that's a plus but we seem to have those fourth quarters fades and let teams hang around .

Another interesting/concerning stat is that four starters played at least 33 min., and a fifth played 29 minutes.

Only Byrne played double-digits minutes off the bench with 13.

The Pirates are at their best when everybody gets involved and contributes. You have the added benefit of keeping everybody fresh and happy because they're getting in the game.

BTW, I see that Gordon totaled 10 rebounds and three blocks. You need players to contribute when their offense is off. TRS was at least strong at the FT line at 6-7 and pulled down six rebounds.

Blue - agree. Liked the play of Taylor Byrne. At Creighton on Thursday at 2:00 will be a tough game. Hope they got rid of the rust today.

Buzzershot, agree on Byrne. Big upsides were ferocious boards and strong defense. I will note that our missed outside shots were frequently too long. So, the strength is there. I just think that the layoffs are a bad thing for this team. Playing in Omaha is tough due to the crowd, so I hope they got battle-tested enough today.

Another factor is that since we are reigning champions, teams will be gunning for us. We have to know it will be a Final Four in every single game played from here on out.

Great way to start the BE with a road W and with 3/19 from beyond the arc no less. Imagine f the hit just 3 more? To think this is a "rebuilding" year. Good job Ladies.

Thursdays game presents a Hugh family problem. Wife & daughter were Blue Jays. Yikes! I will be silently rooting for my alma mater. What's that old saying - when momma's apply, every bodies happy? That's why I'll be silently rooting. lol

Yes, 6 or 7 for 19 would have reflected the game better, since we really did control tempo and boards a lot of the time.

Just watched the second half of Marquette at DePaul. Holy cow, DePaul was totally in charge and Marquette came all the way back to take the lead with a minute and a half, but finally just lost in the last few seconds.

DePaul still has Podkowa and January but gotta say that Marquette is a strong squad. We had better find the FT and 3P shots ASAP.

Offensively speaking we played so different the first two weeks of the season.

Weird.

I think it may have to do with the fact that we need like 3-4 home games to get in rhythm. But that hasn't been the case since the first 2 weeks.

Pat, I was thinking about this over the day (driving from the north). One of the things that interests me is Tony's substitution pattern. For example, two games ago, Molyneaux took up most of the sub time (along with Mosley), but this last game, it was Byrne (along with Mosley). I do not confess to understand exactly what he is responding to, but he clearly makes both planned decisions and in-game adjustments that seem to favor particular matchups to our advantage. We played run-and-gun early on, like you say, and recently, grind-and-pound. I am of the current mind that given his starting five, he deploys reserves based on what he sees live.

So - I do not have the sense that there is a fixed style. It will adjust as the teams roll in - I think. That's my working hypothesis. :D

Readers.

We completed our interview with Tony B today. It will be posted on the Trove tomorrow. Tony discussed the OOC season and the upcoming Big East season among other things.

I'll post a small tidbit on the free board tomorrow as well.

Obviously, what a great coach; however, he is also a fantastic motivator, communicator, etc.who gets his message across to his players. Good job, Coach! GO PIRATES!
