Oh my, what a difference a week can make. Just before everyone sat down to a Thanksgiving meal, the Pirates were coming off their second straight loss, a 66-64 setback to Saint Louis, which snapped a string of 29 straight victories for Seton Hall at home against non-conference opponents. Today, The Hall appears to be fully back on track after sweeping its way through the Wooden Legacy to improve its record to 4-2 with a trophy in tow.
Seton Hall defeated Grand Canyon, Hawai'i and finally Miami in Fullerton, Calif. to claim its first multi-team exempt (MTE) tournament title since winning the 2014 Paradise Jam, which featured a freshman group that included Isaiah Whitehead, Angel Delgado, Khadeen Carrington and Desi Rodriguez. It might have been the middle of the night for the Pirates faithful on the east coast, but the Pirates showed no ill effects in the late hours as Myles Powell (Trenton, N.J.) was named tournament Most Outstanding Player, and three other Pirates, Michael Nzei (Makurdi, Nigeria), Quincy McKnight (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia)received All-Tournament honors.
Although the Pirates return home to the friendly confines of the Prudential Center on Saturday, their quality of opponent only increases. Fresh off an overtime victory against No. 9 Michigan State on Tuesday, a familiar foe, Louisville, visits Newark. The Hall has faced their former BIG EAST brethren only once since Louisville left the conference, notching one of their marquee victories of the 2017-18 season, a thrilling 79-77 win at the KFC Yum! Center.
If the Pirates are going to defeat their second straight ACC opponent, they're going to need a packed Prudential Center. And on top of that, Saturday is a BLUE OUT. We want all Seton Hall fans wearing their Pirate Blue, and to help the cause, we're giving away blue t-shirts to the first 3,000 fans in attendance. So don't come to The Rock wearing red or black or gray or something else that's silly. Wear blue. Show solidarity. Yell, GO PIRATES til you can't any more.
The game begins at noon, but if you're a Seton Hall student, and you want to get even more pumped up for the game, be sure to join us for Morning Madness at Walsh Gym that morning! The special event is 8:15 – 10:00 a.m., Saturday morning, and features a live pregame show, contests and priority access to Prudential Center bussing.
Saturday's clash will be televised on FOX with Tim Brando and former Pirates coach Bill Raftery on the call. You can also catch it on the FOX Sports GO app, and be sure to be ready for some onions. Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin may never top last week's postgame interviews with head coach Kevin Willard, but they'll have to find a way to carry on and deliver Saturday's radio broadcast on AM970 The Answer, simulcast on XM 393, the Pirate Sports Network and the SHU Pirates Mobile App. Don't worry, there will still be a postgame interview.
You can still purchase tickets to the game at SHUPirates.com/SHUvsUL.
Three Things to Know About Saturday's Game vs. Louisville
1. An Old Foe in More Ways than One
Yes, head coach Kevin Willard once coached at Louisville. Guess what? That was over 10 years ago! We're over it. That's not the point of this note. The point is Seton Hall and Louisville used to compete together in the BIG EAST and now they don't. The Cardinals were a thorn in the Pirates' side, winning six of eight matchups when they played in the same conference. Overall, Louisville leads the all-time series 13-6. Also, the Cardinals have a new head coach, Chris Mack, who has faced Seton Hall 12 times as head coach at Xavier. The Pirates are 6-7 against a Mack-coached squad, but Mack's teams are only 1-4 in Newark.
2. Ball Movement and Protection is Everything
Given their vast improvement in protecting and dishing out the ball, it isn't surprising that the Pirates have won their last three games. At the Wooden Legacy, The Hall had more assists than turnovers in all three contests averaging 14.0 assists per game and 11.3 turnovers per contest. In their four wins, the Pirates are averaging 15.5 assists, and in their two losses, they're averaging 3.5 assists.
3. Cheese Please
Junior Myles Powell's breakout season continued at the Wooden Legacy and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Among his exploits, he scored a career-high 40 points, which included 5-for-7 shooting from three-point range, in a victory over Grand Canyon. Powell has been the Pirates' leading scorer in five of six games so far this season, and became the 44th player in Seton Hall history to surpass the 1,000-point career milestone. Powell had 13 points, on the strength of a trio of three-pointers, in last year's win at Louisville. He has averaged 18.8 points per game against Chris Mack's teams in his career, including a 30-point outburst last year at Xavier on Feb. 14.
