MONROE, LA. – The Seton Hall softball team improved to 3-0 on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Prairie View A&M at the Louisiana Monroe Mardi Gras Classic. Madison Strunk (Adkins, Texas) fired seven one-run frames and Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) had a run, an RBI and a stolen base to power The Hall to the triumph over the Lady Panthers (0-3).

Strunk continued her strong start to her freshman campaign with the complete game effort and has now allowed one earned run in 16.1 innings to start the season a perfect 3-0. Walkden and Alex Rabbetts (Corona, Calif.) provided the offense with an RBI apiece, as two runs proved to be all the Pirates would need to back Strunk’s strong outing. The Pirates and Lady Panthers will square off again later on Saturday in a contest scheduled for 6 p.m.

Turning Point

After The Hall jumped out to a 2-0 lead, PVAMU got on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the third. The Lady Panthers threatened for more and put runners on second and third with one away, but Strunk came up with a strikeout and a fly ball to limit the damage and keep the Pirates ahead. The 2-1 lead proved to hold the rest of the way.

Inside The Numbers

- The Pirates out-hit the Lady Panthers, 6-5

- The Hall held PVAMU to 0-7 with two outs

- The Pirates stole four bases, with one each for four different players

- Strunk has not walked a batter in 16.1 innings this year and had a string of 11.2 scoreless innings to open her career snapped in the third inning

MONROE, LA. – The Seton Hall softball team got home runs from Faith Laudano (Islip, N.Y.) and Noel Lent (Yaphanic, N.Y.) to finish off a sweep of Prairie View A&M, securing a 4-2 victory on Saturday night for their second-straight triumph over the Lady Panthers at the Mardi Gras Classic. The Hall improved to 4-0 on the year with the victory, while PVAMU fell to 0-4.

Faith Laudano hit her second home run of the season in the win

Lent went yard in the second inning to give the Pirates an early 2-0 advantage, before Laudano launched a two-run shot in the top of the fourth to put The Hall up by the eventual final score of 4-2. Alannah Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) got the start in the circle for the Pirates and fired three innings before Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) took over for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to notch her first save since the 2014 season.

Turning Point

Prairie View A&M erased a 2-0 deficit to tie the contest in the bottom of the third, but Laudano ensured that the deadlock would be short-lived in the top of the fourth. After Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas) singled and stole second, Laudano smacked a home run to center field that put the Pirates up 4-2.

Inside The Numbers

- Through four games, reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) is slashing .556/.733/1.111 with a home run, four RBIs and four stolen bases

- The Hall has out-scored opponents 22-8 in its 4-0 start to the season

- The Pirates were out-hit, 8-7, marking the first time this season they have had less than an opponent

- The Hall drew a season-high six walks and stolen five bases, also a season-best

MONROE, LA. - The Seton Hall softball team dropped its first contest of 2016, falling 3-1 at Lousiana Monroe in the final game of the Mardi Gras Classic on Sunday morning. The Pirates move to 4-1 on the year with the setback while the Warhawks improve to 4-2.

Lauren Fischer (Robbinsville, N.J.) drove in the lone Pirate run in the second inning, knocking home Alex Rabbetts (Corona, Calif.) who reached on a double. The Warhawks responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, scratching across runs on an RBI groundout, a passed ball and a sac fly. The Pirates were unable to rally late in their first defeat of the season.

At the conclusion of the tournament, four Pirates; Chrisa Head (Lewisville, Texas), Rabbetts, Madison Strunk (Adkins, Texas) and Alexis Walkden (Cibolo, Texas) were named to the Mardi Gras Classic All-Tournament Team and Strunk was named the Co-Most Outstanding Player.

Turning Point

The Pirates brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the top of the seventh, but ULM starter Melanie Coyne capped her complete game outing with a strikeout to secure the victory.

- The Pirates out-hit the Warhawks, 4-3, and have notched more hits than four of five opponents this year

- The Hall held ULM 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position

- Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) drew three walks, tied for most for a Pirate this season
