Bozzella Collects 500th Victory as The Hall Wins Battle of Pirates​

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Seton Hall women's basketball head coach Anthony Bozzella collected the 500th victory of his remarkable career with a 68-57 win over East Carolina in the finale of the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship on Wednesday.

Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) erupted for a game-high 24 points on 10-for-18 shooting and A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill.) had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Pirates used a 21-2 run spanning the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to take the lead and never trailed again. The game was only the second meeting between Seton Hall and East Carolina, two of three Division I teams with "Pirates" as a mascot.

Senior Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a game-high seven assists to go with four points, four rebounds and two steals.

THE STORY:
A layup by Baines gave The Hall an early 10-6 lead, but East Carolina responded with a 9-0 run to give it a 15-10 lead with 3:47 left in the first quarter. Seton Hall bounced back by shutting out ECU the rest of the quarter and an 11-0 run gave it a 21-15 advantage.

The Hall kept running to start the second quarter, extending its run to 21-2. A steal and score by Wright gave it a commanding 31-17 lead with 5:55 left before halftime. East Carolina charged back with a 12-0 run over the next 3:25 to cut its deficit to 31-29. A three-pointer by Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) ended the ECU run and a jumper by Baines sent The Hall into the locker room with a 36-29 advantage.

Trailing 43-34, ECU went on an 8-2 run to cut its deficit to only three points, 45-42, but they couldn't get closer. The Hall responded with a 9-0 run and a jumper by Baines only 11 seconds into the fourth quarter popped its lead back to 11 points, 53-42.

THE NUMBERS:
  • Seton Hall was 27-for-53 (50.9%) from the floor for the game, while East Carolina was 21-for-49 (42.9%). The Hall was 4-for-13 (30.8%) from three-point range, while ECU were 6-for-14 (42.9%).
  • Baines had a game-high 24 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the floor. She also had three rebounds and two assists.
  • The Hall out-rebounded ECU, 29-to-25, which included a 8-to-7 edge on the offensive glass.
  • Davis had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
  • Seton Hall was 10-for-13 (76.9%) from the free-throw line, while East Carolina was 9-for-11 (81.8%).
  • Wright had a game-high seven assists to go with four points, four rebounds and two steals.
  • Seton Hall forced 15 turnovers, while ECU forced 16.
  • Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) had nine points, four rebounds and three assists.
  • The Pirates had 42 points in the paint, compared to just 24 for East Carolina.


THE NOTES:
  • Seton Hall improves to 4-2 on the young season, while East Carolina drops to 2-3.
  • Head coach Anthony Bozzella collected the 500th victory of his career. He's averaging more than 19 wins per season in a career of more than 30+ years.
  • The Hall is now 2-0 all-time against East Carolina in the "Battle of the Pirates." There is only one other Division I team with "Pirates" as its mascot, Hampton University. Seton Hall has never played Hampton.
  • The Hall shot .509 from the field for the game, a season-best.
  • Seton Hall has shot better than .400 from the field in all six of its games so far this season.
  • Baines collected her second straight 20+ point game and the sixth of her career. She has also now scored in double-figures 26 times in her career and in three straight games.
  • Davis collected 10 rebounds for the 60th time in her career and second time at Seton Hall.
  • All four of Seton Hall's victories this year have come by at least 11 points. The Hall's average margin of victory in its four wins is 25.3 points per game.
