So many words or phrases that describe Jared Rhoden. Attitude, positivity, great work ethic, confidence, excellent teammate, overachiever. I could go on and on but maybe this tweet says as much as any words could offer.

That confidence, borne of hard work and the belief in oneself is the reason that Rhoden achieves more on the court than might be expected from the slender wing. In short he as much as any player on the team, with the probable exception of Quincy McKnight, maximized his potential. And note that 'Q' has been playing five years where Rhoden has just completed his second.

Look at Rhoden's stats and the bump from his freshmen year to his sophomore one. In every single category he has improved. Sure some of the numbers are the result of more minutes. But that PT was earned not given. That plus shooting percentages, also greatly improved are not the result of more minutes, but of better more efficient play.

Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard saw fit to increase Rhoden's playing time early in the season as a reward to the hard working player. In fact prior to the start of the regular season in early November Willard told the media that Rhoden was one of the best players in pre-season workouts on the team, noting maybe only Myles Powell was playing better.

Hyperbole from a coach so often prone to that? The thought certainly occurred to Pirate fans, but that was quickly dispelled once the games began.

Many believe that the biggest bump in a player's game takes place between their rookie season and their sophomore one, and Rhoden might just be the poster boy for that way of thinking.

As a freshmen, Rhoden played with a ton of energy but seemingly little purpose as everything appeared to be rushed. The result as expected was flashes of brilliance, but more often rushed shots, fouls, turnovers and the like, all leading to less playing time as Willard could not trust his young forward at crunch time.

Fast forward a year later, the game has now slowed down for him and a currently healthy Rhoden, a player who lost valuable workout time the previous summer due to shoulder issues that set him back, was now sharing time on the court with starting SF Myles Cale. In fact despite starting just a few games the Baldwin, N.Y. native actually played more minutes than his teammate averaging 25.7 to Cale's 23.0.

Has the torch been passed?

That's a question that will be answered this coming November when the regular season begins.

Does the veteran Cale, playing in his final season for the Hall regain his status as both the team's starting 3 as well as a player that can be counted on to not only play north of 30 MPG, but to be on the court in crunch time, or does the brash rising junior take some or all of that away?

Rating

There are still chinks in Rhoden's game, but the improvement he made in one year was startling. Can that trajectory continue for the likable and popular wing? Kevin Willard believes it can and so does Pirate Nation. Rhoden's hard work and take no prisoners attitude has made him both a fan favorite and an improving and more efficient player who can unlike last year be counted on to be on the court in crucial end game situations.

Final rating B+
