We all know the story. Walk-on in 2017. Played hard and caught head coach Kevin Willard's eye that season with the reward being a three year scholarship. One that caused universal criticism from the entire Seton Hall fan base. Including this writer.

How wrong we all were.

Shavar Reynolds thorough sheer tenacity and willpower has earned the trust his head coach has put in him. Few Pirates have ever maximized their potential more than the Manchester, N.J.native, who BTW is the only Garden State scholarship player now on the team.

Reynolds' career will probably be defined by his game winning three point play against St John's last year, but the player is so much more than that. He's hard work, defensive excellence, quality long range shooting, to the tune of 47.8% from the arc, a great teammate and practice player, in short the ultimate Willard team member.

Out of high school Reynolds got no D1 offers despite his stellar career at Manchester Township, where he was a three time team captain. Because of that he spent a year at a prep school before walking on at Seton Hall.

In his first year as a walkon SHU superstar constantly praised Reynolds for making him a better player. He would often tell the media that there wasn't a better defender in the Big East that he went up against and it was hell every day facing Reynolds. Hell that made Powell the player he became as the school's first All Associated Press 1st team member since 1953.

But Reynolds was about to face a dilemma after his initial season at the Hall. Family finances were short and the Pirate guard could not afford to pay his way at the school for a second year.

In stepped Willard who saw something in Reynolds that no one outside the team did. He saw a player who fit the model of what he wanted moving forward. An unselfish player, strong on the defensive end of the court who would do whatever he was asked and do it at 100% of his ability. And before the start of the 2018/19 campaign Willard shocked everyone by offering the former walk-on a free 3 year ride.

Was it worth it? I think everyone now would answer in the affirmative.

Rating.

I am basing this not on expectations but on results of a scholarship player. Reynolds should no longer have that tag (walk-on) attached to his name. He earned a scholarship and should be rated no different than any other player on the team.

I wavered between a B and B+. but when defense, 3 point shooting and the importance of a reliable guard off the bench for a team with little depth in the backcourt is taken into consideration I went with....

Final Rating B+
