The 2014-15 year was another to remember in Seton Hall Athletics, as the Pirates continued to rise in their second year as a member of the revamped BIG EAST Conference.Highlighted by three NCAA Regional berths (Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Golf),there was no shortage of memorable moments across all 14 varsity athletic programs as Seton Hall student-athletes continued to honor and further the University's proud athletic tradition.Over three weeks, SHUPirates.com in conjunction with BURG will reveal its countdown of the year that was.

A NEW ERA

One of the most memorable moments of the past year came courtesy of the very first event on the Seton Hall Athletics calendar for 2014-15 as first-year head coach Rick Stainton and the women’s soccer squad kicked-off the new campaign with a victory.

A former assistant coach at The Hall, Stainton returned to South Orange following a 2013 season in which he helped orchestrate one of the biggest turnarounds in the country; leading Fairleigh Dickinson to new heights.

In his first game in charge for SHU, Stainton and the Pirates hit the road, traveling to Poughkeepsie to take on Marist.

It took just 23 minutes for Seton Hall to get on the board as junior D’Yonna Riley opened her collegiate scoring account in style with the eventual game-winner. The opening tally came off a driven cross from classmate Amanda Gulli and a streaking Riley was in the box to re-direct it home to put The Hall on top for good.

In a preview of things to come, the Seton Hall defense was stifling throughout the 90 minutes and limited the Red Foxes to just one shot attempt over the final half. A Marist own goal in the 76th minute would double the Pirates’ advantage and account for the final score as Seton Hall opened Stainton’s tenure with a 2-0 shutout win.

The clean sheet went to junior Gina Maiorana and was one of six that SHU recorded in its first year under the direction of Stainton, a former collegiate goalkeeper himself who was elected into the Hall of Fame at his alma mater Green Mountain College just under three years ago.

The triumph was also the first for The Hall on the road since the 2012 season opener. By posting a shutout victory in their inaugural outing, Stainton and the Pirates laid the foundation for what evolved into a stout defensive unit as SHU went on to surrender one goal or less in seven of their next eight matches.

With a host of returnees and 11 heralded newcomers entering the fold for 2015, the Pirates will look to take another step towards contending for a championship this fall.
