I guess the only difference is the purpose/reason for that level of security. In Italy, its to prevent terrorism.

It is interesting though that on the trips I've made to England, there is pretty much zero police or military presence.

The other interesting thing about that Philly gas station owner is that the local TV station did a survey asking their viewers if seeing armed security armed with assault rifles would make them feel safer or unsafer, 93% said SAFER! I think the public has spoken on this one.
 
Crime will push our society to more being a cashless among other advantages it has. Apple Pay will be the predominant pay system in a decade.

This is a shame that this gas station owner has to resort to private security.
