I guess the only difference is the purpose/reason for that level of security. In Italy, its to prevent terrorism.We will get used to it.
On any day, this is what you see when you visit the Duomo in Florence, Italy. Same for the Metro in Rome and other sights.
It is interesting though that on the trips I've made to England, there is pretty much zero police or military presence.
The other interesting thing about that Philly gas station owner is that the local TV station did a survey asking their viewers if seeing armed security armed with assault rifles would make them feel safer or unsafer, 93% said SAFER! I think the public has spoken on this one.
Agree on the cashless piece, which makes robbery and shoplifting of goods more likely.
