What's happened to our once proud baseball program? They are off to an 0-9 start and are not even competing so far this season. They have scored 10 runs in 9 games which is pretty difficult to do. The only game they came close to competing in was a 1-0 loss at Florida International. In that game they struck out 16 times. They have struck out as a team 98 times in those 9 games. Their batting average is.182. They only have 53 hits with 11 extra base hits.

The pitching is not good also. They have zero wins with a 9.38 ERA. It used to be a good time of year to get behind the team. It's almost unwatchable. They have a game at Florida Atlantic on Tuesday. After that they go to University of Florida and the Oklahoma St. for 7 games. So, if they don't win this next one, they may start off 0-17. Hopefully not.

People would say it's the Northeastern teams that struggle and that's to be expected. Somewhat true if you look at SJU starting at 1-11, but their games have been closer. However, UConn has started at 8-1 and Rutgers at 9-1. The only common opponent has been UConn playing Florida International. The Hall lost both games being outscored 10-1 while UConn swept them in 3 games outscoring them 28-3. Other schools like Manhattan, Fordham and LIU are doing somewhat better than SHU. I'm hoping for a couple of upsets, and they turn it around by Big East play.

It looks like the model and expectations have changed for baseball. On the other hand, these are supposed to be Division 1 players. Some are receiving scholarship money I believe? The athletic Dept has to be putting in a nice piece of change to fund the program. Right now this is just another team that is underperforming at The University.

Obviously, we all care about basketball. In fact is there any interest in baseball at SHU? Can anybody name a player? I do believe that the talent pool has slipped since kids aren't playing baseball these days. That is certainly adding to the downturn. I believe that the AD should see if there is anything that can aide the coaching staff to facilitate improvement. Maybe it's just a very young team? Unlike basketball we would have no idea of the roster issues. The facility is fine. The weather is the same or a bit milder than past decades. My issue is not about the coach, but should Seton Hall continue having a baseball program in the future? What's the point of having it?
