A Willard on Zags podcast

Anybody listen?
Why? Think he would say something not "coach speak" or something that would be breaking news. Obviously, it would be a bit premature to throw the team under the bus just yet or announce his resignation.

Didn't listen, but saw some transcribed quotes. Basically he knew we'd be too young to make the Dance last year, but this year they should be experienced enough to hopefully make it and "do damage" once there.

LOL

I just listened to my first podcast. No provacative questions. No mis-speaks or crazy phrasing. Says IW has to play like he did early in the tear, Nzei can run the court, Braeden has a tough gig with law school and can stick a 15 footer, Desi at wing and the play of veer eases the backcourt shortage. Nothing new, nothing frustrating.

That play were Willard isolates IW and lets him go 1 on 3 has to go. It was obviously designed by Willard because the other guards and wing would just move out to the 3pt line and stand straight with their arm down.
If Willard could teach good ball movement to create mismatches, then our guards can blow by people and get to the rim. Or pull a kemba and get a big man crossed up for an open jumper.
It isn't age, it's coaching and player IQ.

I have not heard the podcast or read any transcripts and I am going by mjs' post above.

If Willard said and/or thought that the team was not an NCAA team because we were young, especially after the strong start last year, it shows me he has a loser's mentality and should not be a head coach.....I would never say/tell/think that way because it means you gave up on the season before it even started. This will rub off on the team and the kids would not make the playoffs because it would make them not reach team goals and care about the season or each other. In my opinion, this is when individual goals would be pushed to the forefront ahead of team goals.

Sounds familiar?

Not a loser's mentality. Just a loser!

He acknowledged that the team is talented and that not getting to the Tourney would be disappointing. In fact, he said that there is sufficient talent to win some ncaa games. I believe that our talent is good but time will tell if it translates into sufficient wins.

I am no fan, but I think the c riticism is a little overboard. No coach says anything. PJ never said a thing. Why expect any from the heart insight from willard.

True. If he was getting results nobody would care what he is saying. We are parsing words that make him sound like a loser but unfortunately that's what he's been.

Good, well-coached teams get better as the season goes on. They play good defense, shoot free-throws well, are offensively efficient, therefore the field goal percentage is good. Interior defense is solid.

This team did not do well on many of these fronts. That is not just youth, that's coaching and getting kids to buy into a system that works.

I'm rooting for the team and coaches to have a good year. If not, let's move on and go in another direction.

I really don't see how this team is going to be any better than last season. Lose a potential 1st team BE player. Mobley I thought had a very disappointing season last year but do we even have a power forward that will average his points and rebounds from last season? I don't see who that is going to be. Whitehead running the point and not really having a true PG is going to hurt us at times. We have nobody that can shoot the 3 well. I'm very high on Singh so hopefully he can be the answer there. Throw in Willard's team have basically folded the last 2 seasons after February 1st, I just don't see how this team is going to improve drastically. Just too many questions marks in a lot of areas.
