The numbers are in and during the fall semester, Seton Hall student-athletes continued to raise the bar in the classroom as the department-wide cumulative grade-point average climbed to a new all-time high yet again.

With Fall 2015 grades finalized, SHU teams combined for a 3.380 GPA last semester and the cumulative GPA for nearly 250 varsity student-athletes at The Hall now stands at 3.353, marking the 11th consecutive semester that the collective standard has reached a new high-water mark.

“Academic excellence has long been at the heart of what it means to be a Pirate and we could not be more proud of the work our current student-athletes and academic support staff are doing to further that tradition,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics & Recreational Services Patrick Lyons.

“As a department, nothing is more important to us than providing our student-athletes with an opportunity to succeed both on the field and in the classroom,” he continued. “Whether it has been through the construction of the Charles W. Doehler Academic Center for Excellence or the institution of the Helping Athletes Learn to be Leaders (H.A.L.L.) Program, we have implemented a number of changes aimed at positioning our student-athletes to excel. The results however, are a testament to their efforts and approach to balancing all that is asked of them.”

During the fall, 141 Pirates or 58 percent of the student-athlete population earned Dean’s List recognition and the exceptional scholastic performance pervades throughout all 14 varsity teams as each squad currently carries a cumulative GPA of 3.1 or higher.

“Even though we are here with them on a day-to-day basis and we see how hard our student-athletes work, they still manage to impress us,” said Matt Geibel, Director of Academic Support Services.

“To continually exceed the previous standard for over a five-year period; it requires a culture of commitment and accountability, not just among us as a staff, but from the student-athletes themselves,” he added. “We have an exceptional group that has done a tremendous job of utilizing the resources available to them and their achievement is a direct reflection of their dedication.”

The performance came on the heels of a 2014-15 academic year in which 199 Pirates earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors and six Seton Hall programs (baseball, men's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, softball, women's tennis) took home NCAA Public Recognition Awards for posting a multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) in top 10 percent of their respective sports.

That is terrific. We have always had many terrific student athletes, but to too often when the accolades were read, our hoop teams were missing. Not with these guys. Terrific job to the women and men and to the staffs.

When Pat Lyons was hired he noted that this was one of his most important goals.

Everyone involved should be proud of their successful efforts.

Great now that theyre smart lets enroll them in a physics class and get their FT % up!

Great job, I'm sure this a strong differentiation point to recruits as well (or at least I hope so). Other schools likely do not stress academics as much as the Hall (cough...UConn...cough....Syracuse....cough).

Thats because theyre focused on winning championships (cough...UConn...cough....Syracuse....cough)

Being focused on winning championships over academics is not commendable. There can be a reasonable balance. I don't think being on the Dean's List is the reason we are not winning championships. It still is college.

Bingo! Both are commendable. One without the other is unacceptable.

Yea right. We win a championship with a 2.5 and there's absolutely no peep out of you guys. Get real. Academics is great but everyone blows it up because we've forever sucked a numero uno: basketball.

Of course they're not dependant on eachother, but no need to slight other programs when they're extremely successful.
