Dear Pirates Nation,

We have made it to the end of one of the most difficult academic years on record! We have persevered through a pandemic, all 14 of our programs got an opportunity to compete after missing out in 2020, and this week we are once again celebrating the graduation of some incredible student-athletes.

Things are starting to feel normal again, and we already cannot wait for 2021-22 to kick off!

Congratulations to Our Graduates!

Payton Beaver and Janae Barracato at Commencement

Commencement is a special day in a college graduate's life, and we are so proud of all of our graduates who have worked so hard to reach this point. I am especially glad that Seton Hall University was able to hold commencement in person this year after missing out on that opportunity last year due to the pandemic.

While there is always a brief sad moment in thinking about how our student-athletes are departing Seton Hall, their graduation brings this department great joy because we know that they are prepared to do amazing things in life.

I'd like to give special mention that of the 50 student-athletes who received a bachelor's degree this week, 38 of them earned the department's Academic Merit Award for graduating with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 and above. It's a fantastic achievement and indicative of how hard our student-athletes work in the classroom.

Thankful to Host Our Seniors at Our Annual Banquet!

Cristina Fernandez Senior Most Valuable Pirate With Bryan Felt

A couple of weeks before Commencement, we were able to bring back our annual senior banquet, and we were thankful to finally be able to celebrate with our student-athletes in an in-person event. We enjoyed hearing from the coaches about each senior, and we were excited to give out our annual senior awards.

As we tell our seniors every year, Seton Hall will always be a home to them, and we cannot wait to see what they accomplish in the next chapter of their lives!

Baseball to Compete at BIG EAST Championship This Week

Baseball High Fives

Our baseball program continues to showcase that it is firmly planted in the upper echelon of the BIG EAST as it has qualified for the conference championship for a 10th consecutive time, the longest active streak among the schools. The Pirates won 16 BIG EAST games to lead the league, and they will open tournament play against Creighton Thursday at 2:30 p.m., in Mason, Ohio.

Please join me in wishing the team all the best this week, and you can catch the early round action on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Here's the direct link to watch Thursday's game, and should the Pirates advance to the championship round, that will air on FS2 on Sunday.

P.S. - Congratulations to Tyler Burnham on throwing a no-hitter earlier this month!

What a Run to the NCAA Quarterfinals by Men's Soccer!

Men's Soccer Team Celebration Round of 16

After capturing its first BIG EAST Championship since 1991 in April, the men's soccer team had bigger plans for the month of May, and we are so proud of this group of young men who advanced all the way to the NCAA Quarterfinals, one of only eight teams left standing.

It was a thrilling ride from start to finish. The Pirates scored in the 89th minute of a tie match to defeat Air Force in the second round. Then the team had to come back to tie Virginia Tech before going to penalty kicks. In the eighth round of kicks, goalkeeper Andreas Nota called his own number and buried the winning PK to send the Pirates to the quarterfinals.

Though the season came to an end with a defeat to Indiana, the Pirates showed the soccer community what they're capable of; they can compete with anyone in the country. The best part may be that almost everyone is coming back in fall 2021. We're very excited to see watch Coach Lindberg and his crew continue to develop and once again compete for a BIG EAST and national championship.

Finishing as one of the top 10 teams in the country comes with numerous accolades, and we're so proud of the awards that our student-athletes and coaching staff have earned:
  • CJ Tibbling and Luca Dahn were named second-team All-American
  • CJ was also named a first-team Scholar All-American
  • Coach Lindberg and his staff were named East Region Coaching Staff of the Year
  • The team was ranked No. 9 in the final top 25 poll

If you are a soccer supporter and have not yet picked up your BIG EAST Champions t-shirt, you can order online now.

Lastly on this topic, our Pirate Sports Network students did a tremendous job documenting the men's soccer team's success, and I highly suggest watching the cinematic recaps of these incredible victories:

Congratulations to Our Chi Alpha Sigma Inductees!

Chi Alpha Sigma 2021 Inductees Graphic

We are always proud to reveal our annual inductees into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, because that is a prestigious group that requires at least a 3.4 cumulative grade point average with at least a junior academic standing.

This year, we inducted 51 student-athletes into Chi Alpha Sigma, and that now gives our department over 320 inductees since 2011!

Congratulations to all our inductees, and you can read more about the class online.
