South Orange, N.J. - Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Famer, men's basketball standout and longtime NBA assistant coach Adrian Griffin '96 has been named head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, the organization officially announced Monday.
A nine-year NBA veteran, Griffin became an assistant coach in the Association following his playing days, making stops with Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Chicago and Toronto. He is the third Seton Hall alumnus to be an NBA head coach joining Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famers Bobby Wanzer and Dick Vitale.
A standout student-athlete on the basketball court and in the classroom, Griffin is one of only five Seton Hall players to ever be named BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. At the time of his induction into the Seton Hall Athletics Hall of Fame, he ranked 18th all-time in Seton Hall history with 1,414 career points as well as in the top 10 in rebounds, steals and field goal percentage. As a senior, he was named second-team All-BIG EAST and received the Haggerty Award as the Metropolitan area's top player. Griffin guided his teams to the 1993 BIG EAST Tournament championship and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
Griffin is the most recent Pirate standout that is currently making an impact as a coach and leader in the highest levels of basketball. Along with Griffin, the Pirates are represented in the NBA by Mark Bryant, an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns, and Arturas Karnisovas, executive vice president of basketball operations with the Chicago Bulls. In Division I men's college basketball, Seton Hall is one of only two schools (Duke) that have at least five former players actively serving as head coaches; Seton Hall head coach Shaheen Holloway, NJIT head coach Grant Billmeier, UConn head coach Dan Hurley, Binghamton head coach Levell Sanders and Wagner head coach Donald Copeland.
