SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Powered by a two home run, seven RBI performance from Hannah Alexander, the Seton Hall softball team (9-9, 3-0 BIG EAST) claimed victory in the final game of their BIG EAST-opening series sweep against Georgetown (8-8, 0-3 BIG EAST), 14-6 in five innings, at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field.
How It Happened
The game began inauspiciously for the Pirates, as first inning struggles in the circle beguiled the Pirates. The first three Georgetown batters reached base before Kyra Kreuscher took over in the circle to try and stem the bleeding. All three batters would cross home plate by innings end, however, sending The Hall to the bottom of the inning down 3-0.
In the bottom of the frame, after a leadoff single, Katey Brennan scored on an Olivia Gilbert single to pull back within two, 3-1, at the end of the first frame. In her first clean inning, Kresucher stymied Georgetown with only one baserunner allowed. When the bottom of the frame arrived, like they had all weekend, they overwhelmed the Hoyas.
After three singles in four at-bats loaded the bases, Taylor Hill stepped to the plate. The senior walked in a run after a six-pitch at-bat, which sent Kelsey Carr to the plate and Georgetown to the bench in search of a new option in the circle. Carr would foul out, but a red-hot Hannah Alexander stepped to the plate with two outs on the fifth pitch of the at-bat, Alexander demolished a grand slam over the centerfield wall to put the Pirates up 3, 6-3, to the cheers of the raucous Pirate faithful.
The Hoyas added a pair of runs in the top of the third to make it a one-run game, 6-5, off a leadoff home run and a throwing error by the innings' end. With the stakes raised, in the bottom of the frame, Angelina Benitez stepped to the plate with two outs. The freshman knocked a triple into deep right field, just out of the outfielder's grasp, to score Caroline Hobbes and make it a 7-5 Pirates lead.
In the fourth inning, Kreuscher crushed the Hoyas' offensive dreams. With ten pitches, she drew two swinging strikeouts and a fly out to end the inning in swift fashion. Back at the plate in the bottom of the inning, with one runner on, Alexander stepped to the plate again. On the second pitch of the at-bat, she crushed a two-run home run to a near-identical spot to make it a 9-5 Seton Hall lead.
Georgetown cut the Pirates lead to three, 9-6, after another home run to open the fifth inning. After collecting an out and allowing a walk, Kreuscher exited the game in favor of Carr entering the circle for the first time since Friday's complete game victory. After drawing a fly out, Carr loaded the bases with two outs. With the go-ahead run at the plate, Carr forced a fly out to end the top half of inning.
The relentless Seton Hall offense stepped to the plate, up by three, needing five runs to trigger the mercy rule and end the game that inning. After a leadoff single, Hobbes came around to score on a one-out Benitez single to make it a 10-6 game. A Brennan hit-by-pitch put runners on the corners, which was quickly followed by Hill reaching first base on an error, scoring Benitez and making it an 11-6 game.
With three runs to go and two runners on, Carr stepped to the plate. After six feisty pitches, Carr lasered a ball to centerfield. She missed a game-ending home run by inches as it bounced off the top of the wall into play. Both Hill and Brennan scored, only one run remained between the Pirates and another mercy rule win. Four pitches later, Alexander laced a single into the alley between left and right field. A pinch-running Jessica Muniz came around to score and the Pirates claimed a 14-6 victory of Georgetown, sweeping the season series 3-0.
