On my home computers I have been using an old version of word (probably 2010) which has worked fine for the most part but now I've been getting some documents that will not open because they emanate from microsoft 365. There are a number of office clones on the market such as Appache open office. Just wondering if anyone has used any of them or has any suggestions. The home PC's are rarely used for work other than preparing simple documents on occasion. I really just want to be able to read 365 documents sent to me without buying microsoft products that have annual subscription fees.

What is the suffix on these files?

The message I get is "You are trying to use Microsoft Office, but do not have Office"

So I guess my question is which of there clones or programs will open a office document.

Libra will.

Thanks for the help SPK. I installed Libre on one computer & it seems fine. i will install on the other tomorrow.

Apparently Open Office broke up into two different companies a few years ago. Apache and Libre. The two products are very similar according to the review I read. on cnet.

Office programs are needed on any computer, home, or work. Writing essays, preparing presentations, and counting the family budget in a spreadsheet - no matter how you look at it, you can't do it without typical software. I also stopped using it in my work only because everyone switched to google slides templates for google docs, and we rarely use regular programs. I never use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote in my work, but I always work in virtual space as it is more perfect. You can use a bunch of add-ons on a Google doc that looks like Word. Which makes it more convenient to work with
