NEW YORK - Sophomore forward Angel Delgado (Bajos De Haina, Dominican Republic) dominated in a pair of games last week and was rewarded with Metropolitan Basketball Writers Assocation (MBWA) Player of the Week honors, the organization announced Tuesday. The award comes off the heels of Delgado being named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday.
Seton Hall has now received the Met Writers honor in back-to-back weeks. Fellow sophomore Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was crowned player of the week on Feb. 2.
Delgado dominated with averages of 19.0 points and 13.0 rebounds while making over 76 percent of his shots, helping the Pirates to a 2-0 week with wins over Marquette and Georgetown. Against Marquette, he was a scorching 8-for-9 from the field and finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. After the Golden Eagles tied the score to start the second half, Delgado delivered eight of his 11 second-half points in the first 5:46 to help the Pirates build a nine-point lead that eventually turned into a 17-point win.
Against Georgetown, he again went for 19 and 13, making 8 of 12 shots from the floor. He again had a huge second half, coming through with 11 points and six rebounds. He had a critical hoop and harm basket at 5:19 to stave off a Hoyas run and then assisted on Isaiah Whitehead’s dagger three-pointer with 3:44 remaining to give the Pirates a five-point edge. A beast on the offensive glass, he turned four of his five offensive rebounds into eight second chance points.
Delgado now has four consecutive double-doubles, during which he is averaging 16.5 points and 13.8 rebounds, and 12 on the season. Overall for the season, he is averaging 10.5 points and a BIG EAST-best 10.1 rebounds a game.
Delgado and the Pirates are back in action Wednesday vs. Butler at Prudential Center at 6:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on FS1, and Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin will have the radio call on AM970 The Answer, Sirius 145 and XM 201, simulcast on the Pirate Sports Network and the Seton Hall Athletics Gameday App.
Tickets to Wednesday's game are available through Ticketmaster, and Pirates fans can purchase 2-for-1 tickets online using the promo code TMN241.
