yes i get it, roderick walker has past criminal acts and is no angel but again I question if the circumstance happened to be that he is white does the same end result happen?

Here is what makes me most upset, any cop that keeps up these actions post Memorial Day in minnesota is just poking the bear.

The deputy was fired. Isn’t that the way it supposed to work?

Yes deservedly fired but why did this law enforcement agent feel it was his right to do this? Because he has a shield and a weapon?

Cause effect yes I comprehend hall85, i dont want to see more causes.

I don't know, but there are 700,000 LEO's in the U.S. They have a difficult job and see things every day that you and I never see. I'm not excusing this behavior at all (and it seems like he was rightfully fired), but IMO there has been no proof that demonstrates that there is systemic/institutional racism across 20,000 police departments. In fact, by firing this deputy, this PD obviously doesn't tolerate the behavior.

I am glad to see that the officer was fired, but that is not enough. One of the reasons that officers continue to do unacceptable actions is that they are rarely held accountable in a court of law. This officer should be charged and prosecuted to send a message that certain behavior is no longer going to be tolerated. I did actually hear about the autistic child who was shot on multiple media outlets. I would hope we would all agree that this another example of a police officer not being able to deescalate a situation and use deadly force when it clearly was not necessary. It is shame that too many officers are just not given the proper training.

So instead of having these silly discussions about defunding police, shouldn't we be talking about investing in more and better training for police?

<<< Hill said in a statement that Walker cannot be released from jail because of a "felony probation warrant out of Fulton County for cruelty to children, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and a failure to appear warrant out of Hapeville which resulted in Magistrate Court denying him a bond." >>>

Felony for cruelty to children? While this current incident looks bad for the policeman, Walker should have had his ass kicked a long time ago, he had it coming.

I think there needs to be clarification on what defunding the police actually means because I feel like it takes on different meanings. I don't think we need to eliminate the police, but I do think using their funds to generate a task force of social workers/mental health experts to assist with managing civilians that are having mental health breakdowns it may help lessen the amount of situations that end negatively. Several police departments have failed to use the funds appropriately to train officers to handle those situations so they should be allocated elsewhere.

The definition of defunding is pretty clear. Politicians are just walking back the term now because they realized how stupid an idea it was. Have you done any research that indicates how many calls police get a related to mental health? And are you suggesting that mental health calls never become violent putting a healthcare worker at risk?

Once again, I am all in favor of investing in police training on all fronts. Better that we are safe society.

Do you write headlines for CNN? You realize that crap headlines like that divide us further because you piss off the person dealing with their own real life serious issues. Totally clueless.

So because your opinion is they have failed to use the funding appropriately in your mind pull the funding? How about backing that up with statistics? Tell me something of merit before you pull the funding? The Defund the Police movement is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. It obviously does not communicate well either because you have all these people trying to explain it and the explanations all differ depending on the agenda.

Do police require more training in areas of mental health - yes in certain areas it should be very helpful. So if you take away that funding how do they get that training? And you want to send social workers out on police calls? So now the officer has to protect the people and the social worker? That is a non-starter and that has been said by many police chiefs. People think these issues are so easy to fix. More needs to be done for sure but let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Most Americans do not want to defund the police and rightfully so. And many from cities who now face more dangerous conditions where they live. https://fortune.com/2020/07/09/defu...mericans-oppose-defunding-police-departments/

That's a nice pie-in-the-sky idea, but the reality is that violent acts of crime often happen without "mental health breakdowns." You want to send a social worker into a domestic violence situation? Good luck.

Mental Health Professionals/Social Workers already engaged in dangerous situations on a regular basis. I have family members who do it, I see it done at work in the hospital and they are very good at what they do. I'm not going to say they are perfect and that there are never times they require law enforcement, but they have more extensive training then police do on deescalating. You said you wanted facts. Check out this article below. Appx 25% of police killings are associated with people with mental illness. This is not to say that it wasn't justified, but 25% is something worth looking at to see if it can be improved. I think it has to be a synergistic relationship between mental health professionals and police. Police are not always needed when it comes to managing non violent situations.
The CAHOOTS program sends mental health specialists and EMT's to deescalate first and get police involved when necessary. This is not to say this model will work in every city, but as the article alludes to other cities are reaching out for advice how to implement a similar program.

The article you posted illustrates the confusion with defunding the police. In the article it comments about defunding police meaning if that you were ever in trouble and called for the police, they would not be able to come due to lack of funding. That is not true and only instills inappropriate fear in the general public. I think of it as allocating funds to take some of the load off police officers, improving their training(by being around more mental health professionals), and allowing them to focus on more serious issues.

How does that work from a practical standpoint. Call comes in...man with a gun threatening a neighbor....who do you send?

No it doesn’t work like that. If you take a look at the article they give examples. If the person is armed then the police are also coming along, but if it was like that case with the autistic child who was shot then the mental health specialist/EMT are coming. They would try to desecelate and if they are unable to they can give medications to sedate and bring them in for treatment.

yes! better training and also more thorough process for hiring including a psychological evaluation. there has to be some sort of test that can identify people who get off on having power. im not an expert in it but i have to assume some sort of psych evaluation can be done.

Agree with that. I would leave it up to HR experts as to determine the best way to screen candidates. Screening, ongoing training, body cams etc.

not only mandating body cams, but uhh... using them and turning them on... not letting it pass anymore if theyre not on. they help both sides.

Easy to critizie police and they deserve it in these type of incidents. What never seems to be mentioned is
that in almost all cases (of non mental people) the defendant refuses to comply with lawful order. Some people
think if you don’t agree with a police order you can fight it at the scene rather complying and taking legal action
after the fact. You don’t have the right to do this.

because many people are wrongfullt detained or charged and fighting is absolutely useless. my own (small) experience is youre f'd either way. this month inhad police run a racket with the parking authority, wrongfully ticketed and towed my car which ultimately incurred $300 charges. had my car parked with a permit for a week, police put up a temp no parking sign at 7:am knowing my car was damn well there prior. come 8am they tow it. i was there first and even so, how was i supposed to know in that hour? law says give 24. even so i was there first.

when trying to fight it i was given a gigantic middle finger of we dont care and theres nothing you can do. my experience is that its corrupt at any level, so no you cant exactly take legal action. most people dont have the absurd amount of money to hire a lawyer to actually make things right. you always start at the root of the problem.

This is standard money grabbing that goes on, especially in suburban towns. It's wrong and it sucks, but nobody seems to do anything about it.

Agree...this is more systemic and speaks to the town leadership (politicians, police, etc)

This is a revenue grab from town leadership and the police have to do the dirty work. Unfortunately very common and you will see more of it as many towns are facing budget shortfalls because police did not ticket anyone for months during the pandemic. Bad management and wrong but the police are a small part of it. Never forget it is politicians that make the laws - the police are the ones that have to enforce it and only when they are allowed to (see sanctuary cities as an example). Police take the blame for a lot.
