Don't want to hijack the 6 pack thread so I'll start my own.
In no particular order.
1. Offense did not look crisp. Way too much settling for 3 point shots. You have an enormous size and talent advantage at every single position yet we launched 31 shots from the arc with those not named Powell or Rhoden going 3-18.
2. Powell took some very questionable 3 point bombs. But wait, he's Powell....never mind.
3. With the John Thompson Sr type substitution patterns all night long it was hard to get any offensive cohesion going, but it did result in fresh legs and a good defensive effort when the players put their minds to it.
4. Clearly Taurean Thompson is everyone's favorite but he just does not understand how to play the game. Just a shame because his talent is easily 4 star but is game much, much less.
5. VERY disappointed in the rebounding. Bloomfield (must be in the water ) outworked and outhustled the Pirates all game long. If I'm Willard first and foremost that would be my point of emphasis when the team watches film of the game. 2 big men totaling 14 feet 2 inches and their final rebounding stats for the game matched their combined inches, 2.
Now I know in some cases, especially with Gill who was playing free safety looking to block everything in the paint, that pulled him away from the tin, but still 2 whole rebounds?????
6. Quincy had a weird game. Was excellent, no surprise there, on defense and did have 8 assists to 1 TO, but his shot at least for this one game was terrible. Missing is one thing but his misses weren't on the inside of the rim. Let's hope that's a one game anomaly.
7. Sandro played like a man possessed. Did a little bit of everything as his game leading +26 indicated. There's no doubt he and his game have greatly matured.
8. Did Powell miss his second ahead of the field dunk in the last two games? Yes he did. Maybe better if he pulls up for a 3 pointer the next time he is in that situation.
9. Samuel didn't play great and he didn't play badly. Yes he got 10 rebounds but most of them were in his area. I will be more impressed when he gets some that don't come to him.
That's the burden a player has when he has such incredible talent. Witnessed by his offensive slam dunk rebound. He's a freak.
10. Reynolds played a very nice game coming off the bench. His +19 was no mirage. But damn that line drive shot from the arc is not going to get the job done. And please don't bring up the one he hit against SJU. He shot well below 20% last season and added to that last night going 1-5. All open with no defender in his face.
That said, a former walkon and 3rd string PG is certainly a luxury that SHU has never had before. Gotta love this kid.
11. Rhoden is absolutely going to be a force on the perimeter. And he works his ass off all over the court. Big East 6th man of the year? Maybe.
12. Take away the God awful 0-5 from the arc and Myles Cale played a very good all around game. Looks a lot more confident on the court when he has the ball, but the shot is going to have to drop for him to reach that next level.
13. Obiagu looked very stiff and unsure of himself all night long. Hoping it's first game jitters but he might need some time to acclimate. Playing against the size of Bloomfield he should have absolutely dominated inside. He did not.
14. Shows you what happens when a team doesn't play hard. Witness Bloomfield coming out to start the second half on a 8-0 run forcing Willard to call a timeout and insert Myles Powell back into the game. Hard work will always beat pure talent if all things are at least relative.
15. SHU''s size and athleticism is ridiculous. Been watching them since the 60's and have never seen anything like this..
16. The Hall has only one irreplaceable player and that's Powell. Our bench is strong enough that I no longer have to worry about a player getting an early foul and praying the second doesn't follow putting him on the bench for the rest of the first half.
17. For now when the games are for real I would start the same team as last night with Gill replacing Obiagu.
18. Off of the two outings I have witnessed and projecting their impact....
1. Powell
2. Sandro
3, Q (defense)
4. Cale
5. Rhoden
6. Samuel
7. Gill
8. Obiagu
9. Reynolds
10. Thompson
11. Brodie
Nelson has not played to date.
