Avery Johnson to coach Alabama

If somebody here had suggested that Johnson could be good candidate for a college coaching job, the word "never" would have appeared in about 25 responses.

I like this hire, as Johnson's personality would seem to translate well to the college game. His enthusiasm is infectious, and kids will know who is due to recent ESPN gig. It'll be interesting to see who ends up on his staff, as he'll need help getting organized on the recruiting trail. Getting back to his personality, he seems like he'd be a good recruiting closer. What mom wouldn't want her son to play for a nice guy like Avery Johnson?

He and Bruce Pearl should wage some interesting recruiting battles. Not only are there a lot of good young players within Alabama, but also just outside its borders. Take a five-hour car ride any which way from either campus and you'll find a slew of high-major prospects. So the Alabama-Auburn rivalry might finally have some juice.

I wonder if the SEC will waive the two-year transfer rule for Avery Johnson Jr., who was a freshman this year at Texas A&M? He didn't see much time at A&M, and might want to play for his father.

Smartest coaching hire on paper next to Shaka. Hungry to prove himself. Parents will love to send their kid to him.

Agree, kids are going to want to play for him. I'd expect him to hit the ground with a few big classes.

Will we see more schools thinking outside the box by hiring former NBA head coaches to get immediate name recognition for their programs? Chatting with a neighbor over the weekend about the final four, he's a Cornell grad , we talked about the SJU hiring of Mullin and the enormous amount of ink and media attention it's drawing. Half in jest and half semi seriously he said he had the perfect response to Mullin's hiring for SH , he said hire - are you ready for this - Patrick Ewing. After thinking about it , he certainly would be a great selling point in attracting big men to SH , our biggest need and for a long time a problem with our recruiting. Now , Steve, how 's that for thinking outside the box. Don't think I'm even suggesting we go that way or he's a realistic option but it does suggest that SH has to explore all options in finding its next head coach and really get creative in putting its candidate list together.

It's outside the box but don't you think Ewing remembers all those signs at Walsh back in the early 80's??

I think Patrick Ewing sees himself as an NBA head coach. Would seem like a real longshot to interrupt that to go to SHU. After reading SPK's recent characterizations of the SHU program, it looks pretty bleak for us.

I think NBA players can work, but it all depends on the individual and the situation. Avery Johnson seems like a good fit at a college coach, and having rings as a player and having gotten to an NBA Finals as a coach in semi-recent years, he should be able to get kids' attention pretty effectively.

I think I saw Ewing on the bench of the Charlotte Hornets the other day. Lookin rather large. He'd probably think about the SHU job just because of the location.

I also was watching the 1985 championship game between Nova and Gtown yesterday, they had it on in the philly area. Man was that Gtown team a bunch of cheaters and thugs? That nonsense at the end where they kept punching the ball into the crowd... they warned them and still had no technical called. I bet JT was always quick to pull a certain card if anyone questioned the actions and play of his team. Nova shot like 1000% that game LOL.

Steve
Your memory puts me to shame as I had forgotten the "warm" reception we gave Patrick as did a lot of other schools.

Ewing wants to be an NBA coach. He loves the NBA, knows what it takes to be a successful NBA coach, and has done a good job developing big men in the NBA. Based on interviews and actions in recent years since he's been in Charlotte, he wants to be in the NBA and has never done anything to make me think that he's willing to take on the challenge of coaching in college. About a month ago, his people planted the annual coaching story in the press. It wouldn't shock me if he was, at the very least, a finalist in Orlando. Currently, only Orlando and Denver are open. More jobs will surely open up, but those two would be crazy to NOT look closely at Ewing.

Patrick has been an assistant coach in the NBA for 13 years , since 2002 and you wonder if he will ever get to be a head coach as the NBA seems to favor recycling former NBA head coaches or looking to a top college coach before they look at an assistant. Patrick's best shot , like a lot of NBA assistant's get, is if their head coach is fired during the season and the assistant takes over as an interim coach and does a really good job and keeps the job as head coach.

Patrick was a long time neighbor of Seton Hall for much of his Knicks days as well.

He used to live for many years just up South Orange Avenue in Livingston, in the Bel Air section.

University of Charlotte hired Mark Price a couple weeks ago. No coaching experience in college, but in the NBA was player development coach and summer league coach for the Orlando Magic, and an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats (where he worked with the aforementioned Patrick Ewing). Given that he's a coach's son, you wonder why it took Price so long to land a gig like this. If he does well at Charlotte, he could possibly be on the fast track to get the head coaching job at his alma mater, Georgia Tech. I think this is a good hire for Charlotte. At the very least, Price would be a terrific shooting coach.

Not endorsing it, but wondering why no one on this board has ever brought up the name of a veteran NBA assistant, now with the Oklahoma City Thunder, named Mark Bryant.

A lot of NBA assistants / former head coaches don't want a college job because of the whole BS involved in recruiting. However if any list of candidates is being drawn up and you want to include NBA assistants how could anyone object to Mark being on it.
