SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Freshman Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) pitched a complete-game, shutout, one-hitter as the Seton Hall baseball team blanked Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-0, in game one of a double-header on Sunday.

The shutout comes of the seven-inning variety, due to the Sunday double-header, but nevertheless is the second straight for the Pirate right-hander. McCarthy gave up just one hit, while striking out three and walking just one. With only two earned runs over his first 31.2 career innings, his ERA is now a BIG EAST-leading 0.57.

Offensively, Seton Hall recorded seven hits, with senior Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) and freshman Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) collecting two each.

Seton Hall (11-10) scored all the runs it would need with a solo run in the bottom of the first. Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the FDU catcher. He tagged up and moved to third on Falconi's fly out and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.).

In the fourth inning, Falconi doubled to left center to lead off and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) drove in Falconi with an RBI ground out to give Seton hall a 2-0 lead.

Chris Chiaradio (Teaneck, N.J.) led off the fifth inning with a single through the right side and promptly stole second base. With one out, Ramiz doubled to center field, which scored Chiaradio. Ramiz stole third, but was thrown out at the plate on Jenkins' fielder's choice. With two outs, Jenkins stole both second and third base and scored on Falconi's single to extend The Hall's advantage to 4-0.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- Junior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J.) singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth as the Seton Hall baseball team completed the series sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in the second game of Sunday's double-header.

With the score knotted a one in the bottom of the eighth, Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Martin stole second and scored on Jenkins' single up the middle.

Seton Hall (12-10) trailed for six innings until finally tying the score with a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) reached base on a throwing error by FDU's third baseman. With one out, Falconi stole second and moved to third on Sal Annunziata's fly out. Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) followed with an RBI double over the head of the Knights' left fielder to tie the game at one.

Meanwhile, the Pirates used seven pitchers to limit FDU to just one run. Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) made his second career start and was impressive in limited work. The 6-foot-5 right-hander pitched four innings and allowed just one unearned run, while striking out six and walking just one in a no decision.

The Pirates' bullpen gave up just three hits and no runs over the final five innings. Junior Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) picked up his second win of the season with a perfect eighth inning. He also struck out two. Luke Cahill (Tinton Falls, N.J.) preserved the one-run victory in the ninth to earn his first career save.

Lost in the Pirates' victory was the strong start by FDU's Logan Frati. The junior took the hard-luck loss with eight innings and gave up just one earned run. Frati was perfect through the game's first 4.2 innings.

Seton Hall's pitching was impressive throughout the series vs. Fairleigh Dickinson, allowing only two earned runs in the three games. In the process, the Pirates lowered their team ERA by more than half a run.

The victory is Seton Hall's fifth straight and 11th in its last 13 games since starting the season 1-8.

The Hall will return to action this Tuesday, March 31 when it hosts Rider. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

I attended all four Seton Hall games at the Snowbird Classic in Pt Carlotte ,Fl. The HALL broke out the bats beating Florida Intenational University 12-10, St Joseph University 15-9, Lehigh University 13-6 and Western Michigan University 12-4. The weather was 85 to 90 degrees each day.

That's a great point. There's nothing hitters hate worse than batting in cold weather. Taking one on handle hurts like hell and stings from the hands to your toes.

Hopefully the pitching stays the same and the hitters start to get comfortable as the weather now warms up.
