Tommy Amaker's best team in his 4 years at the Hall vs one of PJ's best
The 1991–92 Seton Hall Pirates men's basketball team represented Seton Hall University during the 1991–92 NCAA men's college basketball season. The Pirates were led by tenth year head coach P.J. Carlesimo. They played their home games at Walsh Gymnasium and Meadowlands Arena. 3rd team in history to reach the Sweet 16 where they beat LaSalle, 78-76 and Missouri, 88-71 before losing to #1 seed Duke, 81-69.
The 1999–2000 Seton Hall Pirates men's basketball team represented Seton Hall University during the 1999–2000 NCAA men's college basketball season. They played their home games at Walsh Gymnasium and Meadowlands Arena. 4th team in history to reach the Sweet 16 where they beat Oregon 72-71 OT, Temple 67-65 OT, before losing to Oklahoma State 68-66.
Carleisimo's incredible transformation of Seton Hall from a laughing stock to a perennial national contender continued in 1992 with a trip to the Sweet 16 before the Hall succumbed to nationally ranked #1 Duke. That made it 3 of 4 years where the Hall reached at least the Sweet 16. Never before or since accomplished in the history of the school.
The team was led by junior superstar Terry Dehere who was ably helped by his fellow HS teammate Jerry Walker at the 4, Gordon Winchester, the team's defensive leader at the 3, Bryan Caver at the point and Lithuanian Arturas Karnishovas manning the middle.
Off the bench PJ chose from 7-1 man-child Luther Wright at center, sharp shooter John Leahy on the wing and the combo of Danny Hurley and Daryl Crist at the PG position.
It was an up and down season for this Pirate squad as February approached where after being defeated by Syracuse at the Carrier Dome 70-67 the record stood at a middling 10-6. But from that point on the Pirates caught fire winning 9 of their last 10 regular season games.
They continued their stellar play in the Big East post season beating Boston College before losing to their conference nemesis Syracuse in the semi final game 70-66. A contest where the whistles did not treat the Pirates kindly.
After that difficult loss the Hall navigated it's way to the Sweet 16 where the Pirates lost to Duke in a game where PJ noted afterwards if was as disappointing a loss as he could remember. A shocking statement considering the 1989 FF result.
Conversely the Tommy Amaker 1999-2000 team had few expectations as their season approached. Amaker in year 3 was coming off consecutive 15-15 records. But with the trio of Darius Lane, Rimas Kaukenas and Shaheen Holloway, all averaging between 13 and 15 PPG in a balanced offensive attack the Hall surprised finishing a decent 5th in conference before making their thrilling run to the Sweet 16.
Joining the aforementioned top three in the starting line-up were future NBA first round draft choice Samuel Dalembert at the 5 and Gary Saunders on the wing.
Off the bench were super sub guard Ty Shine and Bronx HS star Greg Morton.
The Hall shot out to a surprising 10-2 start and continued their winning ways reaching a season's best 18-4 record before swooning in the last 5 regular season games losing 4.
That lost momentum continued in the conference's post season as the Hall beat a weak Providence squad before getting blown out by nationally ranked UConn 79-64.
After that defeat the prospects for further success were dim despite Amaker and his Pirate team being invited to the NCAA tournament. But prospects be damned as the Hall beat both LaSalle and #5 Temple in back to back OT nail-biters. The latter game with SHU star PG Holloway on the bench with a season ending ankle injury. Replacing the injured Holloway in the first half was Ty Shine who scored a career-high 26 points, including the winning 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in overtime, to give the 10th-seeded Pirates a 67-65 victory over second-seeded Temple in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
One game later the season ended with a 2 point loss to Oklahoma State with Holloway on the bench in street clothes. But clearly the year was a rousing success and it only got better as the Hall buoyed by the surprising season was soon to recruit the # 1 class in the nation.
Who would win?
This one is not as tough a call as the previous two battle threads as I believe the PJ team was superior to Amaker's overachieving 2000 squad. I'll be kind and go 4-2 but it could have been worse.
