Big East Bigly

OK, but if we had won two, as we should have, from among USC, Iowa, Xavier, Villanova, St. John's, it would have been out of the committee's hands---- or heads---- and we'd be in.

Its because these teams were seeded 1,2,3 and played easy competition, but they were seeded 1,2,3 because they are great teams in a great league.

How do you have 1,2,3 and then nothing. Especially when the next team was 5 games above 500 with wins against two of those teams.

It wasn't a snub it was an attack.

Nice start to tournament but with all being top 3 seeds that was probably not shocking. Hoping for all three in sweet sixteen, two in elite eight and one in final four. I would consider that a very successful showing for the conference. Better would be great but would sign up for this outcome. Btw. Expecting UConn to cut down nets again. They look awesome.

USC, Iowa and Rutgers are the ones. Absolutely nothing from the OOC. Plus all the blowouts in the league.

We easily could have lost 2/3 to St Johns and we weren’t all that much different than Nova or Xavier so those road losses are understandable, even if the manner in which we got our doors blown off wasn’t good.

You can say this about every team that was left out or got a lousy seed.

Those are rivals, like any conference team with some proximity. But none is our Rival, with a capital R and the animosity that comes with it.
If you say so. My only animosity stems from them being an embarrassingly bad program we force ourselves to play and suffer as a result from.

We have spent 20 years hyping this "rivalry". If we put the same sweat equity into doing it with St. Johns, we would have the same result...with the exception it may actually have some on court value for us.

Rutgers and Seton Hall playing draws eyeballs and interest within the state that those other Big East programs don’t on as wide scale and consistent basis. At least that’s been my experience living here. Not saying I agree with it, but I think it’s how it goes.

Fair, but we have leaned into it for decades now and have conditioned fans into thinking this "rivalry" matters. In college basketball terms, we own this rivalry and always have. Has a victory over them ever helped us in any tangible way? Have losses to them hurt us in any tangible way?

It is what it is, people have their opinion on it. Short of hawking extra tickets for the annual circus, I don't see what benefit the program derives from it. Bragging rights that people care about for approximately 1 week a year don't mean much when you have to defend your resume come tournament time.

I couldn't care less about Rutgers. The team I hate losing to more than any other is St. John's. That's our true rival.

SH-Rutgers was a decent rivalry when both were in the same conference, but especially 20-25 years ago. Since then it's a silly, forced series with hype contrived almost exclusively by Jerry Carino (for his own benefit since he covers both teams). It's a series I would have ended 7-8 years ago and would still end today.

Sounds like we have more to lose playing Rutgers than we stand to win? Been saying this for years, maybe it will finally sink in that it's not worth it.
shu wasnt the only team to lose to rutgers. i. fact there were teams the committee selected who lost to rutgers. guess they pick and choose when it matters

That game is Rutgers national championship. For us it does absolutely nothing. Win and you should, lose and you blow postseason (see this year’s NCAA snub as Exhibit A). There are no bragging rights in beating a school that shouldn’t even be in Division I!

It sells tickets and they’re fun to beat. You need a rival, or what is this even about?
We have true rivals, Nova, SJU, etc. Rutgers rivals are the other state schools in the NJAC where RU truly belongs but doesn’t want to go.

Have you missed the SHU bs Villanova games!?

Yes, they do. They just don't tell you publicly because they think it's embarrassing. They view Seton Hall as a mosquito.
over the last 10 years seton hall has been a more well known brand than st. john's, even to basketball fans. and to gen pop. more online consumption of shu basketball than st. john's at least in the last 5.

st. john's is relatively obscure now if it wasn't for pitino

Our fans absolutely take bragging rights from this game. I don’t, and apparently others here don’t, but we are in the minority. There is also no other game annually which draws more eyeballs and interest from casual fans. And that has value to our school given how small our fan base is now.

I agree with you that like shu09, I’ve always looked at our rivals as the traditional BE programs. Nova, SJU, Uconn, Prov. Now in a given year maybe one of the Midwest schools also rises to that level - think Marquette in some of the Wojo years. Yet the RU game gets broader interest and attention.

Also, the potential to lose that game isn’t a reason not to play it. Pike has done a better job with that program. They have a big following. And losing a game to them should never be the difference between us dancing or not.

Crazy talk. Like it or not, they are the college basketball team followed most in a huge media market. One their worst years, they get 100 times the coverage of Seton Hall by the NYC media, and are treated like the Devils, Islanders or even the Nets when they don’t have star players. On decent years they get significant attention locally. With Pitino, it’s been national coverage.

Me and you care about that. And others here. But many casual fans love this game. The schools love it too.

there is an entire country outside of new york. and new york people dont even really care. yankees, giants, jets, mets, rangers, islanders, knicks, nets, nyfc, red bulls, then st. john's. outside of new york st. john's is becoming obscure while the shu brand has elevated. neither are huge.

do you have the attendance numbers of these games? do casual fans care? feel like when a team like michigan state rolled into town the casual fan showed up more

Rutgers loss this year hurt our chances to dance. However, win one more game vs. anyone else or don’t get blown out several times and that loss would not have mattered much. I like the game. Just win it significantly more than you lose it.

Realize that. We can agree to disagree on this. I think you are severely overestimating our “brand”.

I loved it until this year but in the era of metrics, I think it's time to end it.

I'd want to keep it if they were good every year but realistically most of the time we play them, they are likely going to end up in the bottom half of the B1G. Our game against them doesn't help us if we win and hurts us if we lose. Pointless to add the extra pressure of an in state rivalry if it doesn't help the metrics.

I hear you. What if it is going to be our best attended game of the year that is the biggest draw for potential fans or more casual fans? Or the game that has the most juice? Not to us diehards but to the average fan. Do you think that is a factor?
