Big night for SPK

Appears not a good night for someone not named Dan. Sad to find out the apt one is a Bama fan. Why?

Simple, when I was a little boy, about 4 years old, there was just one game on TV every weekend. And because Alabama was so good under Bear Bryant that game most always included the Tide.

Having no idea where Alabama was, I assumed it was in this area, I started to root for them. That rooting interest became even stronger when Joe Namath became the star for my NY Titans/Jets.

Thus a rooting bond was solidified for life. In the good times and the bad. There was a long period where Alabama was just ordinary in college FB but I never abandoned them.

Now I quietly root for them but never rub in their success to any of my friends.

Grew up in a different era regarding trash talking. :)

nice run by Clemson, but Bama is an absolute machine. Saban could probably go for another 10 years if he wanted.

Would still love to see Ohio St and Bama matchup while those 2 coaches are in place.

Bama, Oaklahoma, and Nebraska dominated when we were kids, with Ohio St., Mich St & Nostra Damus right behind. Well ND had the name anyway. Back then it was the "game of the week" unlike today. Different times and in any respects better times. Ah yes, the team that ave us the QB with the bad knee, playboy, prognosticator and a few other things - joe Willie Namath. Roll Tide! ( thought it referred to a detergent. lol).

I watched about a quarter. First college fb game I purposely tuned into in ages.

Halldan is a Bama fan, and nyc too. How did this poi

Remember, Dan is a Knick fan (and his fave college team has not been so good either... ugh), so he roots for the NYY and Bama so he can be happy some of the time...lol

Proud of Clemson, they went toe to toe with the best program in the nation, that is where Clemson wants to be and they're very close. Just wish they wouldn't have lost sight of the Bama TE repeatedly. Ball game.

Totally entertaining game last night. I always root for LSU and attending one of their night games about 15 yrs ago solidified that. Totally awesome atmosphere. Hence I usually root SEC. Clemson gave Tide all they could handle.

Tough Loss SPK. The TE who leaked out at will and special teams were the daggers yesterday. Great effort by Clemson and they are definitely on the rise, and they play exciting football. I would have guessed Richard Todd was the reasoning behind how Dan became an Alabama fan lol. Hard to believe Richard Todd is the last Alabama QB taken in the first round. All in all, last night was a phenomenal championship game.

Clemson acquitted themselves very well. They matched Bama's physicality and put up a ton of yards and points on an elite and deep front seven. A couple blown coverages and a special teams oops kept Clemson from winning the Natty. Clemson has a young roster and will be a force again next year. The Tide will keep rolling. Great theater last night.

Wanted Clemson to win. Always root for the dog if I have no interest in game for a fan perspective of the teams playing.

PS - as a NYG fan, who later converted to a Chiefs fan, how could I ever forget to mention one of the most hated Bama QBs, who I respected but detested, Kenny "Snake" Stabler. Classic pro games with him vs other HOFer Len Dawson.

Yeah other than the Yanks and Alabama it's been a lot of heartache.

Knicks - 2 Championships in my lifetime.
Rangers - 1 Championship in my lifetime.
Jet's - 1 Championship in my lifetime.
The Hall - 1 Championship in my lifetime, but way too young to remember.

Clemson's stock and reputation is WAY up now. Bama pretty much played error free football and didn't make any major mistakes and Clemson was right there step for step. Any slip up by Bama and Clemson wins that game without the help of a bunch of Alabama mistakes/turnovers that they made earlier in the year vs Ole Miss.

Clemson wins the title next year, they are absolutely now confident they can play with a Bama type team and others around the country now have to be leery of whether they can stay toe to toe with a Clemson. If their star Corner was healthy, some of those plays would not have happened.

Two if you don't count the '89 bonehead call by the refs!

BTW - few will remember back to SH HOFer Dr. Bill's tenure on the track team that the indoor team also featured the Germann twins (Herb & George) who were 2 of the nation's best (not just collegians) middle distance runners. Also had a very very good quarter miler. The 2 mile relay had the nation's fastest time in 1965. One of the guys on the relay, either the 1/4 miler, or the other runner was ill at the NCAAs and they added someone else and that relay finished like 5th. Lost the national title to KU (an indoor power at the time) by 1 or 2 points. With the full team, they win the title easily. SH's luck as usual. Both Germanns ran on the US team vs the Soviet Union, which was a huge event back then.

Very good game. I thought Clemson outplayed Bama until the 4th Quarter. That on sides kick decided the game. I was not impressed with Derrick Henry even if he did win the Heisman & it's the 3rd time I saw him play. He's too slow hitting the line. On the other hand very impressed with Clemson QB Watson. Running QB's are hard to defend. The Bama QB reminded me of Geno Smith. Holds the ball too damn long. I think he was sacked 5 or 6 times.

I had no real rooting interest. Just wanted a good game and we certainly got that. It would have been nice if the Clemson on sides kick worked with about 30 second left to see what they could do with it. Bama was on the ropes until they pulled that perfectly executed on sides kick with 10 minutes to go. Actually both teams defended the line very well it was the big plays & gaffs by the defensive backfields that led to all the scores.

SHU Track in the early' 60'r - The Gremann twiins of course. Then in my year of 64 - now Dr Erniee Tolentino, Bucky Vicari and Tom McAuliffe his roommte from Queens and Kevin Hennessey who I believe was a i/2 miler Then there was walk-on Sal Dana who worked so hard and gave everything he had,

We all new each other very well - lived in Old Boland. What a terrific 4 years.

Football back then. Joe Bellino won the Heisman for Navy in 1960.

Oklahoma was big doings in the late 50's.. Did you guys know the Heisman trophy was a sculpture of an "old Fordham back"- at least that's the legend.

Hey, come to SHUWBB Sunday- January 24th. Say you're from PirateCrew- get a lunch and ticket for 10 bucks. Special message board pricing. See pinned post above.

Hey, Danny, how about adding two Big East Titles[plus 2 in Baseball], to that "Championship" resume;those were big, big moments, yes?
And, I too follow Clemson[and Northwestern] in FB, really a great battle last nite-the key play, that doggone onside kick; and, yes, the TE running free all nite

Charlie Joseph it was! He could fly in the quarter and had enough left to help that relay. It may have been him who took sick before the running of that relay, which, if memory serves me correct, was the last event of the meet.

Went to K of C and another meet that season at MSG. Was really proud of those guys grabbing firsts in the relay and usually in the individuals.

My son attends Clemson and we were at the game. Heart breaking loss for Clemson fans. We could have won that game. Our safeties just would not cover that TE and the kickoff return was a back breaker. Coach Swinney suspended three kids before the Orange Bowl for violating team rules and one of them was the kicker (Amon Lakip) who could routinely kick the ball into the end zone. That hurt big time. And the pick was huge and so was the injury to Mackenzie Alexander -huge. It was a great game and Clemson competed and even handled the Bama vaunted D line. They usually play 2 SEC teams each year and that has helped them a lot.

My son could not even talk after the game last night he was so upset. I have to say though Clemson has truly incredible fans. First of all Phoenix/Scottsdale/Glendale was 4 to 1 Clemson fans vs Bama fans. Orange everywhere. The stadium was 3 to 1 Clemson fans if not more. When I go to a few Clemson games each year people will invite you to their tailgates all day long as you walk by them. The Clemson President sends an email before every game to students and Alumni telling them to make sure they welcome the opposing teams fans and the atmosphere is great.

But the kicker was last night (and this unfortunately would never happen at SHU) after they lost the National Championship. They were obviously heart broken and so was I. But almost all the Clemson fans stayed and stood there and sang the school alma mater arm in arm as Bama was celebrating on the field. Hardly any of the Clemson fans moved after the loss and they waited for the band to play and they sung loud and proud along with the whole team that stayed too. It was an incredible sight to see for me especially coming from more of a pro town and Seton Hall. It was a great moment I thought and I give so much credit to those fans. Tough loss but my son loves the school and its easy to see why. The good news is they will be back next year as many of those kids are all sophomores. Go Tigers!

Tom - I was mistaken. On reflection, it wasn't Charlie Joseph on that team. He came years later. First of 2 great quarter milers, the other was Andre Valmon. Both were "Moon" men. This team was under Coach Gibson.

The quarter miler on that team was very good but not Olympic caliber. Dr. Bill should know who it is. My memories what I forget with.

Maybe Calvin Dill ? Though he may have been years later also.

Will do.

Don't think it was Dill. I can see him, was a member of the Varsity Club, just can't remember his name. He was a couple of years ahead of me. Check with Dr. Bill.
