HARRISONBURG, VA. –Senior Amanda Gulli (Toms River, N.J.) converted from the penalty spot in the second half but the Seton Hall women’s soccer team dropped its season opener against William & Mary, 5-1, in the first of two matches at the JMU Invitational.Gulli, the Pirates’ leading scorer a year ago, narrowed the gap to two with the conversion but the Tribe answered with a pair of goals soon after to account for the final score line. William and Mary took a 2-0 advantage into halftime after striking early and finished with a 26-to-5 edge in shot attempts.Turning Point

William and Mary senior Samantha Cordum collected a through ball in the area and opened the scoring just 84 seconds into the match; putting the Tribe on the front foot for the rest of the afternoon.Goals

W&M – 12th minute – Rachel Moore (1) – Slotted home off rebound after goalkeeper deflected original effort from Cordum

HARRISONBURG, VA. The Seton Hall women’s soccer team wrapped up its season-opening trip to the JMU Invitational on Sunday, falling to the host Dukes, 5-0.

As was the case on Friday, an early goal proved to be the difference as the Pirates were unable to complete a comeback after initially conceding in the 12th minute. Senior Amanda Gulli (Toms River, N.J.) who recorded The Hall’s goal against the Tribe and classmate Emily Hansinger (Mount Laurel, N.J.) were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.

The five James Madison goals came from four different players with Alyssa Zurlo netting the game-winner as part of a two-goal afternoon. Three of the tallies came after halftime.Turning Point

A deflection just in front of the Seton Hall area fell to the foot of Kelly Kerrigan who slotted a pass into the vacated space where Zurlo was waiting to open the scoring with her first collegiate goal

JMU - 12thminute - Zurlo (1) –One touch past rushing keeper after being played in following deflection

JMU – 17th minute – Allie Bunner (3) – Chipped in off the volley after keeper attempts to punch clear

JMU - 66thminute – Colleen Gawkins (1) – Scored off rebound

JMU – 68th minute – Zurlo (2) – Crossed in from left on counter attack, re-directed into net

JMU – 89th minute – Chessa Ramirez (1) – Off corner, passed inside area, slotted past keeperInside The Numbers- Freshman goalkeeper Anna MacLean (Thunder Bay, Ontario) recorded four saves to finish her first two matches with a total of nine

- Junior Frankie Maier (Oradell, N.J.) is the only Pirate who attempted a shot in both matches this weekend

- Hansinger, Maier and Melissa Blevins (Laurel Springs, N.J.) all logged 90 minutes in the match

- Freshman Tanika Roach (Somerset, N.J.) earned her first career start and nearly notched her first collegiate goal with a shot in the 15th minuteNews & Notes
