Newark, N.J. - Despite a career day for junior Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.), the Seton Hall men's basketball team couldn't hold onto a nine-point halftime lead and a three-point advantage with under six minutes to play in a 71-67 loss to Providence on Saturday in front of 10,147 at Prudential Center.

Richmond finished with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field to go along with nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Joining him in double figures was graduate student KC Ndefo (Elmont, N.Y.) with 11 points and three blocks.

How It Happened

A three-point basket for the Friars gave them the largest lead of the game, 15-10, just over four minutes in before the Pirates used a 5-0 run, capped off by a Tray Jackson (Detroit, Mich.) three, that reversed the score back in favor of the Pirates, 17-15, with 12:01 to play in the first half.

Thanks to staunch defense by the Pirates, the Friars made only one of their final 13 shots to close the first half. During that span, The Hall used a 10-0 run that turned a one-point deficit into a nine-point lead, 32-23, with 2:45 to go before the break. Richmond scored seven of the Pirates' final 10 points of the first half.

Seton Hall led 36-27 at halftime but Providence came out of the locker room on fire, starting the second half on 20-7 run and led by as much as seven points with 2:09 to go in the game. A late 6-0 spurt for the Pirates got the Pirates to within one with 16 seconds to play but the Friars converted four clutch free throws down the stretch to leave Newark with a four-point win.
