We’re on the doorstep now.

College basketball practice begins Oct. 2, which means we’ve been flipping through the national preview magazines to get a feel for expectations of New Jersey’s eight Division I hoops programs.

Here is a rundown of the magazines’ assessments of those squads (listed alphabetically) based on Lindy’s, Athlon and The Sporting News:

Hard to say what will happen. I've looked back on keeping W-L records and ratings and so on for the Willard years, and in general, the team achieved the low end of the predictions or worse. So 7th or 8th is the early view - I think that's right.

I did my rack-and-stack for pre-season prediction. They failed to meet even my low-end prediction for last year, so honestly, I'm going lower than that (because I have no other evidence to work with). I think the lack of strong senior / junior leadership is the number one reason I think we do poorly this year. I'm thinking a final 12-18 and 0-1 in the BET is what I'm predicting. Now that's off my chest, I will continue my self-imposed embargo on negative commentary and I look forward to see my friends at the games and cheering on the Pirates.

While predications are sometimes reality. Other times they are off.

However IW is projected as a 2nd/3rd team all Big East and he plans on putting his name in the draft?

The professional analysts are determining him to be a Top 10-15 Player in the BE and there are only 60 draft positions.

We will see.

I was certainly not trying to make a negative run at things. I'm thinking about the key building blocks that have to be in place for a strong finish in the league standings, among them being veteran player leadership. If our team gels this year, they could still be a sub-500 team with tons of upper classman promise. This is how you could see that Providence would climb to the top even as they were still mired lower in the standings. Our concern is that we will lose our key players mid-stream and prevent that growth, that year-over-year maturity that would actually indicate turning the corner. So - my prediction is only trying to gauge how I think it will be (yes, with a bit of anguish, but really - not trying to induce a single negative in the thread).

One of the hopeful signs I see for this program is that a number of the freshman and sophomores on this team have a significant upside with players like Carrington , Desi, , Singh, Nzei and maybe others . Of course we know both IW and Angel have a bigger upside but how long they'll be here is unclear so we may not see them reach it here. While it's always a plus to have a number of young players with that upside potential whether they reach it is something we'll have to wait and see.

I'm encouraged by the four sophomores talent, but KW has historically underachieved. Until he can prove otherwise I defer to the experts. 7th or 8th sounds right. No NCAA and bubble NIT...if that happens the BOR and Pat have a new story to spin.

My friend 80, if IW and KC and AD stay for four years, there is nothing but upside in my current view since the experience of a third or fourth year player counts for a lot against young talent. Be that as it may, I have set aside my ill will and bring a simple outlook to this new season, hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

I expect it will all become clear by the end of January. La commedia e finita.

BluePirate, my friend remember when talking about season predictions "quot capita tot sensus "

Well, I could toss out a "non carborundum illegitimi" but instead, I will put forth a more kindly "mens sana in corpore sano". :D

As you may know, Harvard's motto is simply veritas, which leaves us clutching for the well-known variant, in vino veritas.

Since this thread started about how SH will fare in the coming season as viewed by some of the sport media , and in keeping with BP's Latin theme, let's hope it will be Annus Mirabilis and not Annus Horribilis.
