The Pioneers refused to play Ramapo Tuesday night in a sign of solidarity with deposed coach Jose Rebimbas.

Three days after respected men’s basketball coach Jose Rebimbas announced he’s being pushed out after two decades and nearly 400 wins at William Paterson University, his players showed him the ultimate sign of respect.

They refused to play a game.

A video..........

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Something seems very wrong.

Whatever transpired there, refusing to play a game is weak IMO.

Curious. I have never attended a DIII game. Do they charge for tickets?

Not weak. Takes major Cajones. We haven't had a coach that garnered that much respect in a looooong time.

I agree. That was a strong statement.

I have no idea of the details, but pretty remarkable a move to fire Rebimbas was made so swiftly considering he's a 20+ year employee of the university. Something's not adding up.

Meaning refunds were in order as well as a major disappointment to the fans who made the effort to attend the game and the opponent.

I understand the sentiment but think it wasn't handle properly. If you choose not to play make the announcement before you inconvenience a lot of innocent people.

Exactly. Again, just my opinion, but walking off the court just isn't right. There was also an opponent involved who missed an opportunity to play.

Again, no idea what happened, but rise above it and maybe play the game in honor of your coach instead of just bailing on it.

Maybe the players know the details, which depending on what they are, might change my perspective, but on the surface I don't agree with the move.

I would guess that most of the William Paterson fans support the players and Rebimbas. He is an institution at the school. I agree about the Ramapo fans.

In a situation like this the kids acted emotionally not logically and w/o taking into consideration the effect it had on the other team and the fans who took the time to see a game and paid to do so. Were there better ways to respond to this, of course, but this are kids who are between 18 and 22 and believed what they were doing was the right way to express their support for Jose.

Frankly, to make a serious statement sometimes you need pinpoint focus on your aim and say sorry about the rest. All protests inconvenience good, innocent people. I say good for them.

In the absence of better information, I am with the kids. The school apparently suspends or fires a successful and even revered head coach and then then goes into lockdown mode. D3 athletes are playing for the love of the game and team camaraderie. It's not about the money.

Unfortunately, to make a statement you usually have to inconvenience the innocent. Think of every movement to right a wrong, like ever.
Do we know if there was a "wrong" here?

I'm assuming they forfeited the game? If I was their former coach, that's the last thing I'd want to see.

Looks like I'm in the minority here :) I just don't see what doing this will accomplish. It's not like the school is going to re-hire him because of it.

These kids lost their coach, aren't they innocent people as well? Who was worried about them? Good for them! Playing nice and worrying about everyone else's little feelings getting hurt won't do squat for them! I have to believe that these kids know a hell of a lot more about what is going on behind the scenes than anyone else, including those here.

It is certainly true that certain schools find other ways to reward their student-athletes. But it is a totally different experience than D1. Maybe one or two of the William Paterson kids will play overseas after college. For the rest of them, this will be their last stop on the competitive athletic front. They do it because they love it, not for the crowds or the attention. There were 675 people in the stands at their prior home game, more than most HS games but not by much at popular programs.

We don't know for sure. The entire situations seems odd. Nothing has come to light yet. They do this to draw attention to the issue as they feel there was definitely a wrong. They've successfully done that.

Strongly disagree. This could have easily been done in advance. The message would not have changed.

And I don't buy the emotional excuse noted in another thread. There was plenty of time between the firing and the game. This was planned and IMO planned poorly.

I guess I agree. If they had pulled a Mizzou, fans would have had notice. But maybe they wanted to make an actual statement by walking off the floor rather than just committing a covert act of solidarity with their coach. I am still amazed that the school has not addressed the issue.

I knew Jose at SHU.

He was a very nice guy, super hard working and even then he had a keen basketball mind. (I frequently heard he was the best shooter on the team.)

Perhaps it's time for him to take a state retirement. He can use all that experience and move on to bigger challenges (and more money) in D1.

I know he's a head coach, but I'd love to see him make the transition to D1 at SHU as an assistant. He would be a big asset on the bench and in practice. He also knows the area as well as anybody when it comes to recruiting.

Whatever happens, I wish him a lot of luck.
