Carino: Three keys for Seton Hall at Creighton

By and large, our team seems to struggle most against the most fundamentally sound squads, such as Creighton. I think we've got more talent (who would disagree?), but they have a true PG and play the fundamentals exceptionally well. We can win, but these are the games I fear most.

Providence seemed to have a pretty good formula for Creighton. Get Grosselle in foul trouble, and force Watson to shoot.

Absolutely agree with what Sean says. That's why I don't like this match-up. Just the kind of team we usually struggle against.

When we start to overcome this kind of challenge then I think we have arrived as a top 25 team.

They destroyed us on basic pick and roll basketball at the prudential center. If we can defend that we win. If we can't it will be a long night.

I'm worried about foul trouble in this one. Rarely get a good whistle at Creighton and like Jerry says we will be amped up. Have to somehow play smart.

Usually our teams get beat the second time a team plays us in the recent past. I hope we can turn the tables with this team and start to get those wins the second time around as it will determine our season. Go Pirates!

Could this be why Carter got playing time against St. John's? Williard knows he's going to need bodies and fouls to defend the paint.

I think IW has to set the tone early with his body language and how he controls the tempo. I thought all the Pirates except for Desi did not handle the pace of the Xavier game in the proper fashion. They seemed like a team that had too much coffee for breakfast. No way you can win on the road like that. The first Creighton game was more about energy and not reacting quick enough to what was happening on the court. I thought after those initial minutes against SJU the Pirates played a perfect tempo against a very bad team. Notice
how smooth IW's jumper looked as he had outstanding court demeanor. He did look like a future NBA player in that game.

The other key guy was Delgado. Remember how much of a fan favorite he was in those first games at Prudential last season? When the ball went inside we anticipated a successful trip on the offensive end. If Delgado becomes a factor once again on offense then Seton Hall is a tough out. That doesn't mean forcing shots, but instead he is part
of the ball moving around.

It's funny but I had a bad feeling when we played them in Omaha last year (won on a game-winning shot) as well as when they came to Newark this year (lost in a blowout). This time around, I actually have a good feeling about tomorrow. Our team has performed fairly well on the road and I think we'll make some of the necessary adjustments given what happened in the first meeting this season. That said, I don't know how it'll all play out. Hoping for the best but I'd give the slightest of edges to the home team.

Creighton will be ready after that loss to Gtown. I'm sure that caused them to bear down at practices.

I am not sure of the problem is that they are fundamental or that Watson is so fast and he penetrated at will and their bigs pushed Angel around. Like Hoopsfan says, we are not strong on defending the pick and roll and Angel too often gets caught up top with no help inside. Nova did this in the first game. And Creighton did it too.

We were beating them but 5, and then they stopped missing threes. It is tough to win when the other guys shoot 8-19 from three. And I bet they shot 8 for 13 in the last 25 minutes of the game.

And if Angel, Desi and IW play 60 minutes between then, we are gonna be in trouble if we are playing a good team.

I have no pulse on this one and hope we play a good game.

We took their team for granted. Watson's burst, crazy vision and pass reach paired with Groselle's improvement in the post were shocks to our system. We had no answers because we weren't ready. Seeing on tape is one thing. Being half-assed and then experiencing it in person were totally different.

Thus the benchings by KW in that game.

That was really bad and thankfully offset by the win at Providence when clearly KW got their attention during the bye week. There was a refocusing there. A purpose. We've been playing with it since.

I would expect a much better effort and focus this time around. Probably a better result too. Creighton is a solid team for sure. Some individual match-up challenges. But an NCAA team goes on the road and beats them in a revenge game.

You make a good point in that we have played well on the road in Big East Games. We won at Marquette and Providence and were competitive at Nova and Xavier. I think these kids have some swagger and enjoy playing in front of large crowds. These kids seem so appreciative when the Rock is crowded, and, according to some post game interviews, were disappointed in the small crowd against St John's. I really hope for the rest of the year the students come out for the games like they did for Villanova. The players really feed off it. Go Pirates!

Anyone know how we can get the students more engaged/involved with the team (outside of being ranked in top 10)? Also, there are so many empty seats in the middle of the arena. These are the best seats in the house and there are always many open ones. Nonetheless, when we renewed our tickets, those seats show as taken.

Funny, Joe and Evan led with SJU at Seton Hall. No other Pro Sports action that prior night. They gave credit to SHU, but Joe mentioned the place was empty. Then Francesa talked about the game for a few brief moments and mentioned the small crowd. Neither of the hosts were disrespectful to SHU. I believe many of our fans pick and choose the games they are going to. Some of the season ticket holders probably figured a one sided game and did not want the hassle of driving to Newark after the major snowstorm. Also, we have 3 more games within 10 days. Please don't discount economics either. Parking and Food are quite expensive(No fault of The Hall). We have many of our best fans that live a distance from Newark and that's a haul several times within a couple of weeks. We have great fans, but we are small in numbers compared to other schools. I think every game from this point forward will have solid crowds with a nice atmosphere.

Moving forward a winning team is the #1 key to improving the attendance. I also believe that Seton Hall needs more fans that did not go to the school. They have to sell it as a New Jersey team and have to focus on all of the towns and counties within striking distance of Prudential. Maybe offer some type of discount ticket prices for Essex County much the way they do at some golf courses. We have to own Mid to Northern NJ as the College Basketball Team.

NYC Pirate - I agree with your point about economics, the snow storm, etc. Nonetheless, from the students perspective, none of those should come into play. The students are really the one's that can generate the most energy. I just wish they would turn out for all the big east games like they did for Villanova and Wichita St. Anyway, I am hoping for a great crowd against G-town.

Q104.3 also mentioned it as the first sports mention Thursday morning.

Nice to hear our name and the score plus a brief mention of IW and KW on a non-sports radio station while getting ready for work.

Such a great opportunity tonight.

For that brutal 5 game stretch, most would have bought 1-4 was passable, but a win at home v Creighton was expected. If you went 2-3, it was above expectations from that point. But most would have expected a split over the next two (sju and at Creighton). Well, you lost to Creighton, but beat providence. If you can win tonight that puts you right back to expectations of a 2-3 run over the brutal 5 game stretch.

Like following up a bogey on a par 3 with a nice 20 foot made putt on a par 5 for eagle.

Other than the obvious that Nova and WSU had some travelling fans to fill the arena, the team has to play well to keep fans interested. That's one reason it is so important to protect the home court. We haven't gone to the tournament in ten years, so we don't have much of a long standing fan base to always pack the place out.

We lost to Creighton in a game where people thought we weren't giving our best. (that is going to hurt the casual fan base) We lost to Nova in front of a packed house. (that is going to hurt the casual fan base) They come back to play in front of SJU for a game with little juice.

I think the bottom line is if they win this game and get some juice on television than people will think we are for real, and that will help us get a packed house for Marquette. Lose to Creighton and we will see attendance about equal to the SJU game.

When St.John,s is good the attendance is much better. There were very few of their fans the other nite.
