Carton in, Benigno Out

It was expected that Carton would be coming in, and Beningo would move into at least semi-retirement, which he wants. What is surprising is that Roberts would be Carton's partner. I guess they couldn't find a former player interested, who would work well with Carton, or both. Roberts was expected to slide back to a mid-day slot with Maggie Gray, and Marc Malusis would be sent back to the bullpen. I guess this upsets less apple carts with the hopes that Carton & Roberts develop some chemistry beyond Carton calling Roberts a nerd.

Maggie deal ends end of 20, will both sides agree to more terms?
Malusis could always go to the Steve Somers role. I would suspect that Steve is next one out the door via age retirement.
John Jastremski is the utility player.
What is true though this station or any other has to reckon with his past and still have ad spots and live reads for fanduel, draftkings and area casinos.

And more on this, when the pandemic started I would watch Jim Rome on CBSSN as I feel his show is best at getting guests of all levels and he has good interview time with them.

I have been out in my car seldom driving since Mid March, yesterday I drove up near Rutgers for a dr appt. I listened to end of Maggie and Moose, they did a nice flashback spot to when Doc was a mystery caller segment a few months ago and also listened to top of Joe and Evan on way back. Both shows are as vanilla as can be. Shuttle and myself could present more compelling sports talk radio. Though I know he would have significant reservations.

I agree with Section 112 in that I'm not a fan of Carton. This is no great surprise though. Like NYSG, I don't find myself in my car much in the afternoon so I haven't listened to the FAN as much as I used to. I'll probably try to listen but there's always Sirius XM if I don't like what I hear.

If that were to happen it will be interesting to see how they treat SHU Basketball. Roberts has always been good to The Hall and Joe was more than fair. They both wanted to see some more at Tournament time. Carton never gave a hoot and I believe he was a Cuse promoter. Wonder if he'll jump on a UConn bandwagon?

I'm not a fan of Carton. But he's gotten ratings wherever he's been, so I get it. Pairing with Evan Roberts will be a unique dynamic. Evan will wear the cap of the "serious" sports pundit with the "nerdy" sports fan element worked in no doubt as a contrast to Carton. I'm not sure how that will mesh. I happen to be a big fan of Evan and of him and Joe together. I know the Beningo shtick can get old for some, but I love listening to their show after a Jets loss, or when Beningo gets to go at the Jets beat reporters. I find that highly entertaining and a must listen because Beningo brings the perspective of the true die-hard Jets fan whose Sunday literally gets worse each week by their struggles.

I would have loved Joe and Evan to continue together in the mid-day. Their show is all sports, usually all NY sports, without gimmicks. I enjoy that. Moose is fine and I'm not a fan of Maggie at all.

The perfect guy to partner with Carton is Gov Christie.

Sure Chernoff has thought about it,

The article goes over that, and I agree with the article that he's a ratings nonstarter in today's political climate where a significant percentage of people don't want to hear someone who they disagree with politically talk about anything. I think that mentality is juvenile while showing how vapid they are, but business is business.

I would occasionally try listening to Boomer and Carton (I think Boomer can be a good listen). What is the attraction for people to Carton. Is he considered funny? Does he bring a tremendous perspective to sports topics? Does he seem like a guy you can relate too? All those questions are a resounding No for me. Prior to his gambling issue he would always come across to me as a bully or that little guy who would talk crap because he had a friend next to him that would have his back in a fight but then run away of things started to go down. I feel extremely bad for Evan Roberts. I think he’s excellent, is very likable and comes prepared every day. His sports knowledge blows away Carton’s. Evan is going to say all the right things about Carton coming back and second chances. When you hear Evan speak about WFAN he feels that he owes them a debt a gratitude for giving him the opportunity of a lifetime and never has a sense of entitlement. He comes across as a very passionate sports fan that you can sit down with. This isn’t the only reason I’m a huge fan of Evan but he is a fan of the Seton Hall program and when you listen to him talk about the Pirates (which during the season he will give SH some air time) he has a good pulse of the team and the program. Good luck Evan - you are going to need it.

With Evan and Carton together, they might three or four mics. See each as very similar: have to control the show. Evan is just not as much of a screamer as Carton.
If FAN is so interested in ratings and ad dollars--- as of course they are--- wonder if they ever considered airing a Carton show from prison? And won't it be ironic when Carton has to do promotions for ticket give-aways?

Yes, I'm sure the federal prison folks would have been thrilled about having one of their inmates host a radio show.

It's quite discouraging when lowlife scumbag bullies like this guy get second chances in life when there are plenty of upstanding, quality people who either can't get a second chance or can't even get a big break to begin with.

Everyone deserves a second chance. He's also very good at his job, whether folks on this board accept that or not. He was caught, he paid the penalties and served the time he was asked to, and is a free man now. He's entitled to his second chance and to earn a living by plying his trade. You're welcome to not listen to him or the station that hires him, that's your right as much as this is his.

Shu09, no such thing as life being fair to all, there is variance everywhere

With so much quality, topical content available now on podcasts, I rarely listen to open radio, personally. Even a visceral reaction by Benigno on the Jets I can get on the Podcast.

I didn't realize he was out of jail already!

Greg is horrible put him back with Boomer

That show has continued to get excellent ratings so no way they are going to upset that balance right now when it has performed well post-Carton. I’m sure they know the Carton thing has a risk element and so they will live with that to try and beat the Kay show and regain the prominence Big Mike and Mike and the Dog had in that real estate for 20 years up until the very end. But no way you take the risk when your morning show is still doing great without him.

I have never gotten the Carton attraction, but it is indisputable that he drove ratings pre-jail. We will see if it returns.

if you were at a bar and talked to carton for 5 minutes about sports, you would think he doesn't know much. But he is a loudmouth clown. So he must be hired.

I can't see Carton and Evan working well together. Evan has tried to adopt the brash, NYC local sports attitude and it just doesn't work for me. If he keeps up that schtick I see him and Carton clashing style wise.

I was never a huge Carton fan, but I haven't turned on WFAN in months. With Carton back, I'll at least tune in when his show first starts to see if it's worth listening to.

Same here, it was news to me. Must have made quite a deal.
He was heinous is the crime he committed and obviously like any addiction he fell down a rabbit hole he could not get out of, however he was a non violent criminal and i am sure he was on great behavior from day 1 thus why he got released early; any substance or compulsive addiction is a terrible thing and i would hope people here are open to understanding this vs blanket statement oh that addict is weak minded and has no self control
