SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) had a double-double and set the Seton Hall women's basketball single-game record for steals as the Pirates downed Xavier, 72-47, in Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday.
Catalon finished with a program-record 11 steals, a record that was set by Pirates' Hall of Famer Phyllis Mangina with 10 steals against Saint Peter's on Jan. 19, 1978, and matched by Ozelina Gorham three years later. Overall, Seton Hall's 23 team steals are the highest by any BIG EAST team in conference play so far this season, and are one shy of the program team record.
The Hall ran away from Xavier in the second half thanks largely to the Pirates' full-court pressure. The Musketeers committed 33 turnovers for the game, including 20 in the second half.
Catalon finished with 17 points and 11 steals for the first double-double of the year for any Pirate. Faith Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) had 16 points and four rebounds. Jada Eads (Orlando, Fla.) finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals.
THE STORY:
Leading 8-7, The Hall went on a 9-0 run to grab a 17-7 advantage with 1:39 left in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Xavier again cut their deficit to just one point, 20-19, but the Pirates answered with a 7-0 spurt, and a layup by Joniyah Bland Fitzpatrick (New London, Conn.) gave them a 27-19 lead with 3:10 before halftime. Seton Hall took a 31-25 lead into the break. It was a physical first half with the teams combining for 23 personal fouls.
In the third quarter, the Pirates' defense was relentless. The Hall forced 15 turnovers in the third quarter alone, with Catalon grabbing seven of her 11 steals in the game-defining quarter. Xavier cut its deficit to seven points, 39-32, with 5:37 left in the third quarter, but the Pirates closed out the quarter with an 11-4 run to take a 50-36 advantage into the fourth.
In the fourth, the lead grew to as many as 26 points as The Hall pulled away.
